China increasingly flexing military muscle to intimidate Taiwan: Joseph Wu

China is increasingly flexing its military muscle to "intimidate" Taiwan and allowing the democratic island to meaningfully participate in the UN system would demonstrate the global body's determination to unite for peace, Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said on Wednesday. China's expansionism does not stop at Taiwan and its use of gray-zone activities in the East and South China seas are designed to expand its power and substantiate its "hawkish" territorial claims, Wu said, days after Beijing came out with a new "map" reflecting its cartographic aggression. Beijing considers Taiwan as its breakaway province and insists it should be unified with the mainland, by force if necessary. Taiwan, however, sees itself as completely distinct from China. In an article, the Taiwanese foreign minister said Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a reminder of how "autocracies care little" about causing "death and destruction" and that it is imperative to deter similar threats to global peace and

US comm secy warns China will be uninvestable without action on raids

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on Wednesday said she warned Chinese leaders that US businesses might stop investing in their country without prompt action to address complaints about worsening conditions due to raids on firms, unexplained fines and unpredictable official behaviour. Raimondo's comments add to pressure on Chinese leader Xi Jinping's government, which is trying to revive investor interest and reverse an economic slump. Business groups say confidence among foreign companies is at an all-time low. Official figures show foreign investment plunged in the latest quarter. Raimondo visited Beijing as part of US efforts to restore relations that plummeted to their lowest level in decades due to disputes about technology, security, Taiwan and other issues. She called her meetings with China's No. 2 leader, Premier Li Qiang, and other officials very productive but said she didn't pull any punches in conveying business complaints. Raimondo said CEOs ahead of her trip told her

China map very serious issue, PM Modi should speak on it: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday termed as "very serious" the issue of China releasing a "standard map" that laid claim over Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin, saying the neighbouring country had already taken India's land in Ladakh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi should speak on the issue. On Monday, Beijing released the 2023 edition of the so-called "standard map of China" that laid claim over Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as regions within its borders. Asked about the map issue as he was leaving for Karnataka, Gandhi told reporters, "I have just returned from Ladakh and I have been saying for years that what the PM has said, that not one inch of land has been lost in Ladakh, is an absolute lie. The whole of Ladakh knows that China has usurped our land." "This map issue is very serious but they have already taken away our land and the PM should say something about that too," the former Congress president said. The Congress on Tuesday took strong objection to the ...

Britain's foreign secretary will visit China in an attempt to shore up ties

Britain's top diplomat, James Cleverly, is set to visit China on Wednesday, in the first trip by a U.K. foreign secretary to the country in more than five years. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed the long-awaited trip on Tuesday. The two sides will have in-depth communication on Sino-British relations and international and regional issues of common concern, spokesman Wang Wenbin said. We hope the British side will work with us to uphold the spirit of mutual respect, deepen exchanges, enhance mutual understanding and promote the stable development of Sino-British relations. Cleverly's visit is an attempt to stabilize China-Britain ties, which have sunk to their lowest level in decades. The countries disagree over issues such as Beijing's curbing of civil freedoms in Hong Kong, a former British colony, alleged human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region, China's support for Russia and Britain's close security ties with the United States. Cleverly said in June he would

China releases new edition of standard map showing its territorial claims

China on Monday officially released the 2023 edition of its standard map incorporating the disputed areas including its claims over Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin region, Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea. India has repeatedly said that the state of Arunachal Pradesh has "always been" and will "always be" an integral part of the country. The 2023 edition of China's standard map was officially released on Monday and launched on the website of the standard map service hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, state-run Global Times said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. This map is compiled based on the drawing method of the national boundaries of China and various countries in the world, the post said. The map also displayed by the Global Times showed Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims as South Tibet, and Aksai Chin occupied by it in the 1962 war. India has repeatedly told China that "Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of ..

G20: Outcome document adopted; Russia, China object to para on Ukraine war

The G20-Chief Science Advisers' Roundtable in Gujarat on Monday concluded with the unanimous adoption of the 'Outcome Document' which focussed on the need to have a 'One Health' approach to collectively address health threats to humans, animals and the environment for better disease prevention, control, and pandemic preparedness. Owing to the objections raised by both Russia and China, a paragraph on the war in Ukraine was classified as 'Chair Summary', while remaining 16 paragraphs became part of the 'Outcome Document' that was unanimously adopted by all the member countries, said an official release. China won't require Covid-19 tests for incoming travellers as it reopens

China will no longer require a negative COVID-19 test result for incoming travellers starting Wednesday, a milestone in its reopening to the rest of the world after a three-year isolation that began with the country's borders closing in March 2020. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin announced the change at a briefing in Beijing on Monday. China in January ended quarantine requirements for its own citizens traveling from abroad, and over the past few months has gradually expanded the list of countries that Chinese people can travel to and increased the number of international flights. Beijing ended its tough domestic zero COVID policy only in December, after years of draconian curbs that at times included full-city lockdowns and lengthy quarantines for people who were infected. The restrictions slowed the world's second-largest economy, leading to rising unemployment and occasional instances of unrest. As part of those measures, incoming travelers were required to isolate fo
