The Supreme Court on Monday rapped the Rajasthan government over its "unsatisfactory" affidavit enumerating steps on payment of ex-gratia to family members of those who died of COVID-19, and said it was not doing any charity. A bench of Justices M R Shah and Krishna Murari directed the state government to file a detailed affidavit in the matter. "Earlier also you had made an assurance. State of Rajasthan is not doing any charity. There is a direction issued by this court and persons affected by COVID-19 should be treated with sympathy. "Affidavit filed by the Rajasthan government is not satisfactory at all. The counsel prays for time to put a detailed affidavit. Put up on Friday," the bench said. Mumbai on Sunday recorded 172 new cases of COVID-19 that raised the tally of infections to 11,51,342, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The toll remained unchanged at 19,735, while the count of recoveries rose to 11,30,745 after 102 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, the official said. With a recovery rate of 98.2 per cent, the city currently has 862 active cases, he said. Of the latest cases, six patients are symptomatic, taking the total number of hospitalised persons to 63, the official said. At least 6,974 swab samples were tested in the city in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of tests conducted so far to 1,83,57,526, he said. The overall growth rate between October 2 and 8 now stands at 0.008 per cent, while doubling rate is 8,341 days, the official added.
Maharashtra on Sunday recorded 455 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 81,24,754, while the death toll remained unchanged at 1,48,357, a health official said. The recovery count increased by 356 in the last 24 hours to touch 79,74,031, leaving the state with an active caseload of 2,366, he said. State health department data revealed the recovery rate was 98.14 per cent and the fatality rate stood at 1.82 per cent. Singapore is set to lift the Covid-19 restrictions on non-vaccinated individuals from Monday but it is ready to step up such measures when necessary to lower infection rates and protect the unvaccinated, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said on Sunday. With vaccination-differentiated measures (VDS) to be fully lifted on Monday, the minister noted that while such restrictions aimed at protecting the unvaccinated in crowded areas, had pushed many to get vaccinated, it is better to step them down given that they are now not as extensive. "Today VDS is very light and in restaurants is pretty much an honesty system with random sporadic enforcement, Ong said while talking to the media at a club event. "It's not that VDS doesn't work. In its current form, which is light, I think it doesn't work as well. So, we might as well step it down with the understanding that we can step up to an appropriate level when we really need it." The Pune Zilla Parishad plans to build a memorial for the 35 staffers who died while taking part in efforts to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, its chief executive officer Ayush Prasad said on Saturday. These 35 persons were deployed in hospitals or were providing "extension health services", he said, adding the plan draws inspiration from defence and police forces, which have martyr memorials. "A committee has been formed to formalise the design. All permissions from the state government will be taken to utilise some bit of public land to construct the memorial," he added.
More than Rs 20 crore has been distributed as compensation to the kin of coronavirus victims in Raigad district in Maharashtra, an official said on Saturday. He said 4,713 persons have died due to COVID-19 in the district so far and the compensation amount stands at Rs 50,000 each. "We have so far disbursed Rs 20.47 crore. While the applications of the kin of 4,094 victims have been processed, a total of 619 applications are in the process of being approved," he said. The district's COVID-19 caseload as on Saturday was 2,85,684, including 2,20,884 recoveries, the official added.

Delhi on Friday reported 101 new Covid cases with a positivity rate of 1.38 per cent, while one more person succumbed to the viral disease, according to the data issued by the city health department here. Maharashtra on Friday reported 366 new COVID-19 cases and five more deaths linked to the infection, taking the overall tally to 81,23,819 and the toll to 1,48,355, said the health department. The state has witnessed a significant jump in daily cases and coronavirus-linked fatalities as compared to the previous day. Maharashtra had reported 198 cases and one death due to the infection on Thursday. Of the total new cases, the highest 207 were registered in the Mumbai administrative circle followed by Pune (85), Nagpur (20), Latur (16), Nashik (14), Aurangabad (11), Kolhapur (7) and Akola (6) circles, said the department in a bulletin.
