Delhi Police refuses Cong to observe 'satyagraha' in solidarity with Rahul

The Delhi Police has denied permission to the Congress for holding 'satyagraha' at Rajghat to protest against Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from the Lok Sabha, officials said on Sunday. In a letter, the Delhi Police said the request was rejected due to law and order and traffic reasons and prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC have been imposed in and around Rajghat. A senior police officer told PTI that while permission for holding the satyagraha has been denied, adequate security arrangements have been put in place. The Congress has announced plans to hold a day-long satyagraha in front of Gandhi statues at all states and district headquarters on Sunday to protest against Gandhi's disqualification. Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat's Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. The disqualification will bar Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting polls for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction.

Case registered in Delhi over protest at Indian High Commission in London

Delhi Police has registered a case in connection with the protest held outside the Indian High Commission in London on March 19, officials said here on Friday. The case was registered by the special cell under the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act as it involves unlawful activities carried out by certain people holding Indian nationality abroad, a senior police officer said. It was done after the Ministry of Home Affairs directed the Delhi Police to take appropriate legal action on the receipt of a report from the Ministry of External Affairs over the incident at the Indian High Commission March 19. The Delhi Police on Sunday reached the residence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with a notice issued to him over his women are still being sexually assaulted remark made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The police team headed by Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda arrived at Gandhi's 12, Tughlaq Lane residence, officials said. Taking cognisance of social media posts, police had sent a questionnaire to the Congress leader and asked him to give details about the women who approached him regarding sexual harassment". According to police, Gandhi gave a statement in Srinagar during the Bharat Jodo Yatra that 'I have heard that women are still being sexually assaulted'. Police had asked him to give details of these victims so that security could be provided to them, the officials said.

13,525 vacancies in Delhi Police, 14% of total strength, says Parl Panel

As many as 13,525 posts are lying vacant in the Delhi Police which is around 14 per cent of the sanctioned strength of 94,254, a Parliamentary panel has noted. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs, headed by BJP MP Brijlal, noted that the recruitment process to fill the 3,861 posts is going on and recommended that the hiring process should be completed within a fixed timeframe. "The committee notes that there are 13,525 vacancies in the Delhi Police which is around 14 per cent of the sanctioned strength of 94,254," the report of the committee, which was submitted in Parliament on Friday, said. The panel recommended that the remaining 9,664 vacancies may also be filled as planned by the Delhi Police. This will increase the strength of the Delhi Police and further enhance their capability for maintenance of law and order in the National Capital Region, it noted. The committee also recommended that two different mechanisms should be devised for improving coordination .
