Delhi's maximum temperature settled a notch above normal at 27.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday, the IMD said. A thick blanket of fog had covered parts of outer Delhi in the morning, significantly reducing visibility and delaying at least 47 trains. The city had recorded a minimum temperature of 10.2 degrees Celsius, 2.6 notches above normal, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Met has forecast dense fog on Sunday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 21 and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital was in the 'poor' category with a reading of 263 at 7 pm. An AQI between 0-50 is considered 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor' and 401-500 'severe'.

Light rain was witnessed in parts of Delhi on Saturday evening as the city recorded a low of 7.7 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department. Forty-five trains were delayed as a thick layer of fog engulfed the city in the morning, reducing visibility which impacted train operations, officials said. The maximum temperature settled as 17 degrees Celsius, three notches below the season's average, the IMD said. Parts of the national capital, including the Central Delhi area, received light rain. According to the weather department, Safdarjung observed minimum visibility of 50 metre from 12.30 am to 1.30 am which improved thereafter becoming 200 metre and continues to remain so 7.30 am. The minimum temperature settled at 7.7 degree Celsius, normal during the season, the IMD said. The humidity was 100 per cent during the day. An NGO on Saturday claimed that at least 474 homeless people in Delhi have died due to "winter exposure" between November 15, 2024, and January 10, 2025. The claim made by Centre for Holistic Development (CHD), an NGO working for the welfare of homeless, however, has no official confirmation. In a letter addressed to Delhi Chief Secretary Dharmendra and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) Chief Executive Officer Ravi Dhawan, CHD cited police statistics, indicating that an alarming 80 per cent of "unidentified dead bodies" in the city are believed of homeless individuals. "Between November 15 2024 to January 10, 2025, 474 homeless people died in Delhi due to the 'winter exposure' and unavailability of essential protective measures such as warm clothing, blankets, or adequate shelter," the NGO claimed. CHD also highlighted that people living on the streets face numerous health challenges, including respiratory infections, skin ailments, arthritis flare-ups, and deterioratin

The winter chill intensified in most parts of north India on Wednesday as night temperatures in the Kashmir Valley dipped in most parts to settle below zero degrees, while it inched closer to the freezing point even in parts of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. The national capital, however, saw a brief respite from the bitter cold during the day and saw a sunny afternoon and higher daytime temperatures. In Himachal Pradesh, the weather department issued a yellow warning for a cold wave, ground frost and dense fog for some places in five of the 12 districts in the state -- Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra and Mandi. Due to a western disturbance, there is a possibility of rain and snowfall in parts of northwest India later in the week, the weather office said. The India Meteorological Department said in its Wednesday bulletin that minimum temperatures are likely to fall by about 2 degrees Celsius in northwest India during the next 24 hours and a gradual rise by 2-4 degrees thereafter.
