Cyclone Fani: Odisha health dept alerts district medical chief, public health officers

The Directorate of Public Health of Odisha Hara Prasad Pattanaik on Monday alerted all chief district medical and public health officers regarding preparedness for the cyclonic storm 'Fani'.Pattanaik informed that the cyclonic storm is going to make landfall on May 3 at 5.30 pm and is likely to touch Andhra Pradesh border and later reach Odisha's Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Ganjam, Puri, Khorda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, and Keonjhar.All these districts have been put on high alert due to heavy rainfall and gusty winds of 40 to 60 kmph, which may lead to cyclone and flood in many parts of the state.Pattanaik has asked other district officers to watch out and be prepared in accordance with the cyclone and flood action plan. Official: 3 dead in helicopter crash in Honolulu suburb

Three people died Monday when a helicopter crashed on a street in suburban Honolulu, officials said. A resident said he heard the morning crash then saw a ball of fire in a road when he ran from his house. Leleo Knappenberger told Hawaii News Now that his mother heard the helicopter flying over the house, making a strange noise. He said he later saw what appeared to be the tail end of the helicopter. "It's all smashed to pieces," he said. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the agency believes three people were on board the four-seat, Robinson R44 aircraft. He said the circumstances of the crash were unknown. No further details were available on those killed. The crash occurred in Kailua, a town of 50,000 people about a 30-minute drive from downtown Honolulu. Cyclone 'Fani' intensified into a 'severe cyclonic storm' Monday evening and is headed towards the Odisha coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. It could take a shape of an 'extremely severe cyclone' by Wednesday, prompting the government to put the National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Coast Guard on high alert, officials said. In its 9 pm bulletin, the Cyclone Warning Division of the IMD said the storm currently lays about 620 km east-northeast of the Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, 770 km east-southeast of Chennai and 900 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam. AAIB to probe SpiceJet aircraft that overshot runway at Shirdi airport

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will investigate the incident where a SpiceJet aircraft overshot the runway at Shirdi airport."On April 29, at about 16:22 hours, SpiceJet flight SG 946 from Delhi to Shirdi had stuck on the end of Runway 27, apparently due to the high tailwind," said authorities at Shirdi airport."There were a total of 189 passengers and six crew members were on board and measures are being taken by the authorities to deplane the passengers," they said."Aircraft is stuck in the soft surface. Two Delhi Fire Service officials injured as fire breaks out in 3 chemical factories

A major fire broke out in three chemical factories in west Delhi's Naraina Monday, triggering a blast in which a fireman and a special officer of the Delhi Fire Service were injured, a senior officer said. The fire broke out in the factories located behind PVR Cinema at the Naraina industrial area around 11.35 am. Forty fire tenders were rushed to the spot after a call about the blaze was received. Five tourists killed, two others injured in road accident

Five tourists were killed and two others injured in a road accident in Sikkim's East district, police said on Monday. The tourists, hailing from Hooghly in West Bengal were returning to the state capital from Tsomgo Lake-Baba Mandir when a private vehicle carrying them lost control and fell down 400 metre down the Jawaharlal Nehru Road near 7th Mile on Sunday evening, police said. While four tourists died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries at a hospital, they said, adding two injured persons, including the driver of the vehicle were undergoing treatment at STNM hospital. The victims have been identified as Kakila Bose (42), Snehasish Bose (58), Soma Kar (32), Sandip Kar (44) and Subhajit Bose (26), police said.

The unknown nature of the chemical that leads to a fire makes "chemical fires" the most challenging to douse, according to officials. On Monday, a fire broke out in three chemical factories that injured a fireman and a special officer of the Delhi Fire Service during the firefighting operation. There was also a blast that was triggered at the site. "The firemen fighting the blaze had protection suits, but the nature of the chemical was not known to us. The owner was also not available to inform us about the nature of the chemical. It was during the firefighting operation that we got to know that the chemical was adhesive in nature and had made the floor slippery causing the two officials to slip on the floor," said Vipin Kental, director, Delhi Fire Service. Jharkhand: CRPF jawan carries sick poll official for 3 km; saves his life

A CRPF jawan saved the life of an on-duty election official in Jharkhand Monday after he carried him on his shoulders for about 3 km when the latter fell sick during polling, a senior official said. He said the incident took place at booth number 179 in Sarango in Gumla district at about 4 pm when a staffer, Leonard Lakda, at the centre suddenly collapsed with a bleeding nose. Constable Anil Sharma of the CRPF's 226th battalion was deployed at the booth for security duty and seeing this, he immediately picked up Lakda on his shoulders and rushed to a nearby health centre, about 3 km from the booth, he said. Odisha on high alert as Cyclone Fani progresses

With the Centre issuing advisory on Cyclone Fani progressing towards the eastern coast, the Odisha government Monday said it has put the coastal districts on high alert and is prepared to face any eventulaity. The entire administration is on high alert following the IMD report on the cyclone and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has reviewed the situation arising out of it, officials said. Man dies at polling booth in Hardoi

A 50-year-old man died while awaiting his turn to cast his vote at a polling booth in Umrapur village near here. Ompal Singh was standing in the queue at booth 302 of the village under Baghauli police station area here, when he suddenly collapsed and became unconscious, said Presiding Officer Anis Ahmed. Mumbai: Fire breaks out in Big Bazaar outlet in Matunga

A fire broke out in a ground-plus-one building housing a Big Bazaar outlet in the city's Matunga West area on Monday afternoon, an official said. At least five fire engines, a Quick Response Vehicle, one ambulance and several Fire Brigade personnel have reached the site for dousing operations, he said.
