Man killed, 2 women injured after car rams into e-rickshaw

An e-rickshaw driver was killed and two women were injured after a car rammed into the vehicle in West Delhi on Saturday, police said. After the accident, the car driver, identified as Mukesh Tiwari, fled from the spot, Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Monika Bhardwaj said. The three persons were rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where Mohammad Tahid, driver of the e-rickshaw, was declared brought dead by doctors. The two injured women were identified as Kanchan (22) and Rakesh (32). A case was registered in the matter and efforts were underway to nab the accused, the DCP said.

40 shanties gutted in fire in Delhi

At least 40 shanties were gutted after a major fire broke out in east Delhi's Lalita park area on Saturday, officials said. They said 15 LPG cylinders also exploded in the area after the fire broke out. The Fire Department received information about the incident at around 11.10 am and 12 fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The flames were doused by 12.10 pm, the officials said, adding that no casualty was reported. The cause of the fire was yet to ascertained, they added.

Fire at Haldia port, crane driver dies

One person died as a major fire broke out in a mobile harbour crane in Haldia dock of the Kolkata port on Saturday, an official said. The fire was noticed in the mobile harbour crane on berth no 13 where coal unloading was taking place. A mobile harbour crane driver could not come down due to the blaze and he was rescued when he jumped on a safety net below. However, he succumbed to injuries after he was taken to hospital, Kolkata Port Trust Chairman Vinit Kumar told PTI. The berth is managed by a private operator and these high value cranes are huge structures used to load and unload cargo at much faster rate than normal cranes, sources said. Seven fire tenders of the port, fire services and other companies of Haldia brought the blaze under control by noon. The cause of fire is not yet known but it has caused major damage, the official said.

10 dead as bus falls into 200-ft gorge in HP's Chamba: Officials

A private bus fell into a 200-feet-deep gorge near the Panchpula bridge in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district Saturday evening, leaving at least 10 passengers dead, officials said. They said the bus met the accident near Banikhet in Dalhousie sub-division when it was travelling from Dalhousie to Pathankot in Punjab. Chamba Superintendent of Police (SP) Monica Bhutunguru said while 10 passengers lost their lives in the incident, several others have been injured. She had earlier put the number of deceased at 12. She said a team led by the Dalhousie Deputy Superintendent of Police has arrived at the accident site and rescue operation is underway, but is hampered by darkness. In a statement issued in Shimla, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur expressed grief over the incident and directed the district administration to provide immediate relief to the affected.

5 wedding guests killed as van rams into truck

Five persons were killed and 13 others injured when a maxi van carrying wedding guests dashed against a stationary truck in Assam's Dhubri district on Saturday, police said. The accident occurred on National Highway 31 in Gauripur town when the group was returning from the reception of a wedding on Friday night. Five persons - four members of the bride's family and the handyman of the vehicle - died on the spot, police said. The 13 injured persons were admitted to a hospital here and a nursing home at Cooch Behar in neighbouring West Bengal. The condition of most of the injured was stated to be serious, police said.

Tunisia: 12 killed, 20 injured in road accident

12 people were killed while 20 more were wounded in a road accident in Sabala district in Sidi Bouzid province on Saturday morning.The mishap occurred after a truck carrying farm workers collided with a truck carrying poultry, Xinhua reported while quoting local media.While 11 people died on the spot, a woman succumbed to her injuries at the Sidi Bouzid Regional Hospital.The wounded are currently receiving treatment at the regional hospital, as per reports.

17 dead in east Ukraine coal mine blast

The death toll from a coal mine blast in a separatist eastern region of Ukraine rose to 17 on Saturday, rebel authorities said. The gas blast on Thursday ripped through the mine in Yurievka village in the self-proclaimed republic of Lugansk, which broke away from Kiev in 2014 and is run by Moscow-backed rebels. "The tragedy took the life of 17 miners," Leonid Pasechnik, the head of the unrecognised Lugansk republic, said on Twitter. He added that the bodies of all the miners that died have been recovered. Earlier the death toll accounted to 13, with another four people missing. Pasechnik called the explosion at the Skhidcarbon mine a "terrible tragedy" and declared April 29 a day of mourning. Boy among 4 killed in car crash

A five-year-old boy was among four people killed in a car crash on the Eastern Peripheral Highway in UP's Gautam Buddh Nagar Saturday. The accident took place around 2 am when the victims were returning home in Bulandshahr from Jaipur, Rajasthan. The speeding car in which they were travelling was apparently hit from the rear side by an unidentified vehicle after which it crashed into a side cut on the highway, police said. The car driver is undergoing treatment at a hospital. "While Pankaj Verma, a jeweller, his workers Iqbal and Khalil died on the spot, Iqbal's five-year-old son succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Car driver Ankit is critical," Dankaur Station House Officer (SHO) Samresh Kumar Singh said. The car was badly damaged in the accident. It appears that the car driver survived as the air bag on his side of the dashboard had opened while the other air bags did not work properly, he added. One dead as car catches fire

One person was burnt alive in a car that caught fire Saturday on Raikot road at the outskirts of the Mulanpur Dakha, about 25 km from here, police said. The deceased was identified as Harnek Singh (65), a former sarpanch of nearby Hissowal village, DSP Ludhiana (rural) G S Bains said. Singh was alone in the car, he added. He owned a commission agent shop in the grain market of Dakha and was on his way to the shop when the incident occurred, the DSP said. A short circuit could be the cause of the fire, the DSP said, adding the vehicle was completely damaged in the incident.
