Earthquake of 3.2 magnitude hits Manipur's Noney district on Tuesday

An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 hit the Noney district of Manipur in the early hours of Tuesday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).The quake struck at around 2.46 am with a depth of 25 km."Earthquake of Magnitude:3.2, Occurred on 28-02-2023, 02:46:39 IST, Lat: 24.67 & Long: 93.66, Depth: 25 Km, Location: Noney, Manipur, India," the NCS said in a tweet.Earlier on February 19, an earthquake struck the town of Nandigama in Andhra Pradesh's NTR district. No loss of lives was reported.The tremors occurred at around 7.13 am on Sunday and lasted for 3.4 seconds. Fearful residents rushed out of their homes onto the streets.On the same day, an earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale also struck Madhya Pradesh.According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake struck Dhar, about 151 km southwest of Indore around 1 pm.The earthquake's epicentre was at a depth of 10 km beneath the earth's surface, the agency said.

Earthquake of 5.6 magnitude hits Turkey toppling more buildings, 1 killed

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook southern Turkiye on Monday three weeks after a catastrophic temblor devastated the region causing some already damaged buildings to collapse and killing at least one person, the country's disaster management agency, AFAD, said. Another 69 people were injured as a result of the earthquake which was centred in the town of Yesilyurt in Malatya province, AFAD's chief Yunus Sezer told reporters. More than two dozen buildings collapsed. Yesilyurt's mayor, Mehmet Cinar, told HaberTurk television that a father and daughter were trapped beneath the rubble of a four-story building in the town. The pair had entered the damaged building to collect belongings. Elsewhere in Malatya, search-and-rescue teams were sifting through the rubble of two damaged buildings that toppled on top of some parked cars, HaberTurk reported. Malatya was among 11 Turkish provinces hit by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that devastated parts of southern Turkiye and northern Syria on .

Two quakes of 3.8, 3.3 magnitude hit Gujarat's Kutch and Amreli on Monday

Two tremors of 3.8 and 3.3 magnitude hit Gujarat's Kutch and Amreli districts respectively on Monday, officials from the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said. There was no report of any casualty or property damage, as per the district authorities. A tremor of 3.8 magnitude was recorded at 10.49 am in Kutch district. Its epicentre was 62 km north-north east of Lakhpat town in Kutch, at a depth of 15 km, they said. Another tremor of 3.3 magnitude was recorded near Mitiyala village in Amreli district at 1.42 am on Monday, at a depth of 7.1 km, the officials from the Gandhinagar-based ISR said. This was the fifth tremor in Amreli in the last one week in the intensity range of 3.1 to 3.4, they said. Amreli district, located in the Saurashtra region, has been witnessing an earthquake swarm event, as in last two years it has recorded around 400 mild tremors, as per officials. Turkey launches investigation into 612 people after earthquake: Official

Investigations have been launched against more than 600 people in relation to buildings that collapsed in Turkiye's catastrophic earthquake earlier this month, a government official said Saturday. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said 184 of the 612 suspects had been jailed pending trial. Those in custody include construction contractors and building owners or managers, he said in televised comments from a coordination center in Diyarbakir in southeast Turkiye. The detection of evidence in the buildings continues as a basis for criminal investigation, Bozdag added. Deep earthquakes could be employed to study earth's mantle: Study

A new study demonstrated a new method, involving deep earthquakes, to measure the fluidity of the Earth's mantle. The study, by a scientist from University of Chicago, US, suggested there may be a layer of surprisingly fluid rock ringing the Earth, at the very bottom of the upper mantle. The finding was made by measuring the lingering movement registered by GPS sensors on islands in the wake of a deep earthquake in the Pacific Ocean near Fiji, the study published in the journal Nature said. "Even though the mantle makes up the largest part of Earth, there's still a lot we don't know about it," said Sunyoung Park, a geophysicist with the University of Chicago and the lead author on the study. "We think there's a lot more we can learn by using these deep earthquakes as a way to probe these questions," said Park. We still know surprisingly little about the Earth beneath our feet. The furthest anyone has managed to dig down is about seven and a half miles before the increasing heat .

Two more minor earthquakes hit Gujarat's Amreli, third in two days

Two minor tremors of 3.4 and 3.1 magnitudes were recorded in 24 hours in Gujarat's Amreli district, taking the number of such earthquakes in the area to three in the past two days, an official from the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said on Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken stock of the situation after an earthquake hit Tajikistan on Thursday, official sources said. The earthquake of 6.8 magnitude hit eastern Tajikistan in the morning. They said India is in touch with Tajik authorities for any possible requirement of assistance. "The Prime Minister has taken stock of the situation and is monitoring developments relating to the impact of the earthquake in Tajikistan," said a source. "We are in touch with Tajik authorities and relevant Government of India bodies are closely coordinating any required assistance," the source said. Earlier this month, India sent relief materials as well as medical and rescue teams to Turkiye after a powerful quake struck it. As part of quake assistance, India also sent relief materials and medicines to Syria which was also hit by the quake.

A mild tremor of 3.1 magnitude was recorded in Savarkundla taluka of Gujarat's Amreli district on Thursday, an official from the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said. There was no report of any loss of life or damage to property, district authorities said. The tremor was recorded 44 kilometres south-south east of Amreli at Mitiyala village in Savarkundla taluka, at a depth of 6.2 km, said the official from the Gandhinagar-based ISR. On February 19, a tremor of 2.2 magnitude was recorded in Khambha area of Amreli district, located in Saurashtra region, it said. Gujarat's Kutch district, also located in the Saurashtra region, experienced a devastating earthquake in January 2001 in which 13,800 people were killed and another 1.67 lakh were injured. The earthquake had caused severe damage to properties in various towns and villages of the district.

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook part of Tajikistan early Thursday near China's far western Xinjiang region. It was 67 kilometers (41 miles) west of Murghob, Tajikistan and 20 kilometers (12 miles) deep, according to the US Geological Survey. The area is remote and lightly populated. Earthquake of 5.2 magnitude struck western Nepal, no casualty reported

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal Wednesday afternoon. The Nepal Earthquake Monitoring Centre said the quake struck at 1.45 pm and it was recorded in the Bajura district, 450 km west of Kathmandu. However, there were no reports of any damage from the Earthquake yet, said officials. Earlier, on January 24, one person was killed when Bajura was hit by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake.
