Kumbh: Schoolchildren impressed with preparation being done for devotees

The ongoing Kumbh here has created a wave of excitement among schoolchildren, who say they are impressed with preparation being done for devotees in India and abroad. The Kumbh Mela commenced on January 15 on Makar Sankranti, which was the first bathing day, and will end on Mahashivratri on March 4. Apratim Neogy, a student of class 7, said, "I witnessed the arrival of delegates from various countries recently in the city. I was a part of the human chain formed by the school children here, while welcoming the foreign delegates. It was a very exciting and memorable experience to welcome the foreign guests in our city." Neogy, who has an interest in art and painting, said the wall paintings done (under the campaign Paint My City) has given a new dimension to Sangam city, which was earlier synonymous with encroached roads. "I also called up my great-grandmother (who stays in the city) on a couple of occasions to know the mythological stories pertaining to the Kumbh," the class 7 student .

NTA declares results of JEE (Main) examination

The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday declared the results of the JEE (Main) examination held on January 8-12 this year in total eight shifts.Out of 8,74,469 candidates who appeared in the examination, as many as 15 candidates have received 100 percentile score. The NTA has also issued the list of state-wise toppers."The first JEE (Main) examination was conducted by NTA between 8 and 12 January in two shifts per day across 258 cities in the country and abroad," said a press release from the NTA."A total number of 9,29,198 candidates were registered for Paper-I (B.E/ B Tech) in the examination," further informed the NTA in the press release.There were 467 examination centers across the country and abroad. A total number of 566 observers, 254 city coordinators, and 25 state coordinators were deployed at these centres to oversee the smooth and fair conduct of the examination.NTA scores are normalised scores across multi-sessions papers and are based on the relative performance ..

Eminent neurologist Jagjit Chopra dies

Padma Bhushan winning neurologist Jagjit Singh Chopra has died here at the age of 84, the PGIMER said. After suffering a stroke, Chopra had been admitted in the ICU of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) for the past one month. Chopra is survived by his son and daughter. A condolence meet was held on Saturday at the medical institute, under the chairmanship of Director Jagat Ram. Senior professors, former directors, PGI faculty members, administrative staff and resident doctors mourned the death of the eminent medical scientist. He was the founder of the department of neurology at PGIMER, Chandigarh. Born in Lahore, Chopra completed his initial studies at the Government Medical College in Patiala and pursued further studies in the United Kingdom. 17 students injured as school bus overturns in Himachal

Seventeen children were injured as a school bus overturned in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district on Saturday, the police said. The private bus was ferrying the students to their school when the accident occurred after its steering got locked, they said. The injured children were taken to a local hospital for treatment where the condition of five of them remains critical, they added. The police have registered a case and further investigation is on, a police officer said.

Kalam Grove on college campus found torched

: Hundreds of saplings on the campus of Chikkanna Government Arts College in Tirupur were found burnt allegedly by some miscreants early Saturday, police said. Noticing this, a faculty member-cum-NSS officer Mohan, who motivated the students to plant saplings to develop a Kalam Grove on the campus, was so shocked that he swooned, the police said. Para-teachers end two-month long strike in Jharkhand

The over two-month long strike by para-teachers in Jharkhand pressing for various demands has ended, following a meeting with the state government. The Ekikrit Para Shikshak Sangharsh Morcha said on Friday that it had called off the 63-day strike, after a meeting with Education and Literacy Department Minister Neera Yadav. The para-teachers, who assist teaching in schools and are not employed full-time, have been demanding regularisation of jobs and enhancement of salaries, among others. Jharkhand Chief Minister Rghubar Das, following a meeting with a delegation of para-teachers on Friday, said the state government is looking into their demands. "Para-teachers have a significant role to play... Manuals are being prepared to safeguard their interests so they don't have to agitate for their demands repeatedly," Das said.

Presidency students on indefinite fast over suspension order

A section of students of the Presidency University here went on an indefinite fast on Friday demanding withdrawal of the suspension of three students. The three students were suspended on December 19 for locking the gate of the university and preventing the Vice Chancellor and other officials from entering the premises on September 10 when agitation over the hand over of Hindu Hostel was going on. A spokesman of the agitating students Subho Biswas told PTI, 7 students including the three suspended ones sat for indefinite fast from 9 pm Friday demanding withdrawal of the suspension order and they be allowed to attend classes. The institute has unions of both SFI and Independent Consolidation (IC). DUTA protests against varsity's provision to have 10 pc permanent positions as contractual appointments

The Delhi University Teachers' Association Friday protested outside the vice chancellor's office against the varsity's provision to have 10 per cent of permanent positions as contractual appointments. The protest was "against the total apathy of the varsity administration towards teachers who are waiting for their promotion for more than a decade," the DUTA said. It said contractual jobs of any kind was unacceptable as thousands of young teachers are already working in "extremely exploitative and uncertain conditions". Taking measures to improve quality of education: Khandu

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu said Friday that the quality of education in Arunachal Pradesh has "dropped" and the government is taking measures to rectify it. "Its a fact that quality of education in the state has dropped, which we all must accept, Khandu said at the golden jubilee celebration of Govt Higher Secondary School, Bilat in East Siang district, an official release said. Khandu said that in the past numerous schools were opened but many remained non-functional and in dilapidated condition. But now, the state has excess teachers with much better teacher-student ratio but there is a shortage in subject teachers. The chief minister said measures are being taken to improve the quality of education by recruiting adequate number of subject teachers to fulfil the shortage and hoped that by the next academic session, all gaps will be filled. Delhi govt's free entrance exam coaching scheme attracts over 4,000 students

Within a year of its launch, Delhi government's scheme which provides free entrance coaching for SC/ST students preparing for competitive exams has attracted over 4000 students, officials said. The 'Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana', launched by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on December 9, 2017, was reviewed by Delhi Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam along with officials. The scheme provides free coaching for students preparing for civil services, judicial services, banking, engineering, medicine, and other competitive examinations through known and established coaching institutions. The minister, who is also the chairperson of the Delhi Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC), Minority and Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation Ltd, discussed ways to reach out to more students. 2 held for raping teen

Two youths have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old school student in Haryana's Kurukshetra district, police said Friday. The accused -- Varinder alias Bunty (24) and Vishal (22) -- abducted the girl when she was on her way to tuition from school in Shahabad Markanda, around 20 km from here, on Thursday, the police said. Varinder, who was driving a car, came out of it and forcefully pushed the teenager into the vehicle. Vishal was also sitting in the car. They went towards Barara. On the way, Vishal forced her to take liquor and they took her to a house in a village, where Varinder raped her, police said. They later dropped her near Aggarwal dharamshala in Shahbad Markanda. Two duo, residents of Bhana village near the town, have been arrested, the police added.

ISRO to give students practical experience of satellite building under new programme

The Indian Space Research Organisation will select over 100 students from across India and give them a practical experience of how satellites are build under the new 'Young Scientist Programme', its chairman K Sivan announced Friday. The initiative, chalked to attract young minds and arouse interest in this niche arena, is conceptualised on the lines of a similar programme run by American space agency NASA. Sivan said mostly Class 8 students three each from 29 states and seven Union territories will be given lectures by ISRO scientists and they will also get access to the space agency's laboratories. The programme will be funded entirely by ISRO, he said. "We want them to get a practical experience of building a small satellite. If the satellites are good, we want them to fly," Sivan said.
