It turns out nicotine patches can do more than just control your nicotine cravings. According to a recent study, nicotine can help improve memory loss in older adults with mild cognitive impairment. The study looked at individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), the stage between normal aging and dementia when others begin to notice that an individual is developing mild memory or thinking problems. Many older adults with MCI go on to develop Alzheimer's disease. The study looked at 74 non-smokers with MCI and an average age of 76. Half of the patients were given a nicotine patch of 15 mg a day for six months and half received a placebo. The study was designed so neither the participants nor the investigators knew which group received the nicotine patch."What we and others have shown is that nicotine doesn't do much for memory and attention in the normal population, but it does do something for those whose cognitive function is already impaired," said Paul Newhouse, lead author of .

Fifteen babies were killed by an infection at a Tunisian state hospital, investigators said Friday, as they announced a new death toll in a scandal which has sparked public outrage. Investigations were launched after newborns at the Rabta state hospital in Tunis started dying last week. Mohamed Douagi, head of the commission of inquiry, said Friday in total 22 babies have died at the clinic since March 6. Regenerating damaged tissues using therapeutic cells may prove to be a promising new approach to treat chronic kidney disease, scientists say. Researchers from the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) in the US found that harnessing the unique properties of human amniotic fluid-derived stem cells could potentially help recover organ function in a pre-clinical model of kidney disease. "Our results indicate that this type of stem cell could be used as an off the shelf universal cell source and may provide an alternative therapeutic strategy for patients suffering from this chronic and debilitating disease," said James J Yoo, a professor at WFIRM. Amniotic fluid-derived stem cells can be used as a universal cell source because they have the ability to become different cell types as well as the ability to be anti-inflammatory, making them a potential source for regeneration. Unlike pluripotent and adult stem cells, amniotic fluid-derived stem cells are not as likely to .
According to a recent study Choline, a B vitamin nutrient can help in preventing any foetal brain problems or mental health issues in the baby which is caused by the virus of cold or influenza during pregnancy. The study published in the Journal of Pediatrics talks about how viruses such as flu or cold in pregnant women have been linked to mental problems or illnesses like Attention Deficit Disorder or Schizophrenia later in life. Moreover, the study found that Choline, an essential B vitamin nutrient can prevent foetal brain developmental problems."Mothers want to give their babies the best possible start in life. Colds and flu are often unavoidable, even if the mother has had a flu shot. But colds and flu during pregnancy double the risk of future mental illnesses.More and more information shows that choline helps the baby's brain develop properly. We found that higher levels of choline prevent fetal brain problems from developing, even when the mother is infected. Choline ...

There has been an increase in heat-induced heart attack risk between 2001 and 2014, a study analysing data over a period of 28 years has found. The study, published in the European Heart Journal, looked at more than 27,000 heart attack patients between 1987 and 2014. The average age of the patients studied was around 63 and 73 per cent were men. About 13,000 heart attacks ended in the death of the patient. The individual heart attacks were compared with meteorological data on the day of the attack and adjusted for a range of additional factors, such as the day of the week and socioeconomic status. "Over a period of 28 years, we found that there has been an increase in heat-induced heart attack risk in recent years," said Kai Chen, a researcher at Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen in Germany. The researchers compared data from 1987 to 2000 with data from 2001 to 2014. "Our analysis showed that, over the last few years, the risk of heat-induced heart attack with increasing average daily ...
China's population above 60 years has touched 420 million and that of children over six years to 100 million, putting heavy pressure on nursing services and day care centres, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said on Friday. After implementing the decades-old 'one-child policy', the world's most populous country China is facing demographic crisis with rapidly ageing population. It permitted to have the second child in 2016. China currently has 250 million people above 60 years and 170 million above 65 years, Li said during his annual press conference here. The supply of nursing services for the elderly and infants in China is insufficient and cannot meet demand, and this situation deserves the highest attention, Li said. There are only three beds on average for every 100 citizens in nursing homes, he said. "In big cities people have to wait 90 years before they get beds in nursing homes," he said, adding that due to the shortage of supply services, many people in big cities find it difficult
Green Tea has once again been found as the Hail Mary for not just obesity but various other inflammatory biomarkers linked with poor health, finds a recent study. The study was done on mice to find out what other benefits can green tea actually provide and was published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. The researchers found that the mice who were fed a diet of 2 per cent green tea extract fared far better than those that ate a diet without it, a finding that has prompted an upcoming study of green tea's potential benefits in people at high risk of diabetes and heart disease. The benefits were seen in the new study appear to stem from improved gut health, including more beneficial microbes in the intestines of the mice and less permeability in the intestinal wall which is commonly called ads as the leaky gut."The results of studies looking at obesity management so far had been a real mixed bag. Some seem to support green tea for weight loss, but a lot of other research had ...
