Passengers of an IndiGo flight from Hyderabad to Port Blair experienced anxious moments on Tuesday as the A320 neo aircraft tilted mid-air, according to a senior regulatory official. Aviation regulator DGCA has started a probe into the incident, which is the latest in a series of issues involving IndiGo's fleet of A320 neo planes powered with Pratt & Whitney engines. After it tilted to one side mid-air, the pilot managed to balance the aircraft, a senior DGCA official told PTI. An IndiGo spokesperson said the pilot observed a minor engine sensor issue that did not warrant any automated caution and that the plane made a normal landing at Port Blair. The number of passengers on board could not be ascertained. A320 neo plane has more than 180 seats. The A320 neo aircraft suffered "yawing" and the regulator might also ask for the flight's DFDR (Digital Flight Data Recorder) to assess the angle of tilt and fix responsibility for the incident, the official said. Generally, yaw motion i

IndiGo and GoAir have grounded nine A320 neo planes due to Pratt & Whitney engine problems, prompting Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu to seek a detailed report on the issue from regulator DGCA. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) today also said the engines are being continuously monitored and safety issues are addressed adequately. "At present, there are 60 A320 neos with P&W engines (41 with IndiGo and 19 with GoAir). As on date, 7 with IndiGo and 2 with GoAir are on ground," the regulator said in a statement. These groundings are due to combustor distress found during routine scheduled boroscopic inspection. These are all Block B combustors, it added. This refers to inspection done using a boroscope -- an optical device that is used for inspecting parts that are generally inaccessible. Taking note of the grounding, Prabhu has sought a detailed report on the matter from the DGCA. Security of the passengers is of paramount importance and at no cost the ...

Since the induction of A320 neo planes powered by P&W engines in March 2016, IndiGo has intermittently been facing engine issues and has grounded some of these aircraft on earlier occasions also. The problems varied from mid-air engine shut downs to oil chip detection. "IndiGo has grounded five of its A320neo aircraft due to P&W issues. These aircraft are currently grounded at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport," a source said. Another source said the five aircraft were grounded today.
