Sri Lanka inflation dips marginally to 61% in November from 66% in Oct

Sri Lanka's key inflation rate dipped marginally to 61 per cent in November, down from 66 per cent in October, the country's statistics office said on Wednesday, as the crisis-hit economy showed signs of recovery. The 12-month inflation by the Colombo Consumer Price Index peaked at 69.8 per cent in September and the National Consumer Price Index peaked at 73.8 per cent. The consumer price index in Colombo eased to 61 per cent in November, marginally down from 66 per cent reported in October, the Census and Statistics Department said. This is the second straight month that the key inflation rate has eased this year. Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe on Wednesday said the dipping inflation rate after peaking to 70 per cent was a good indicator that the economy was trudging along the path of recovery. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has raised borrowing costs by 950 basis points this year, taking the key rate to 15.5 per cent to tame rising prices. Colombo seeks to secure the

Inflation in Europe eases as energy prices down but still in double digits

Inflation in Europe has eased for the first time in more than a year as energy prices drifted down from painful highs, but the double-digit rate still hovers near a record that has robbed consumers of their spending power and led economists to predict a recession. The consumer price index in the 19 countries that use the euro currency hit 10% in November from a year earlier, the European Union statistics agency Eurostat said Wednesday. That was a drop from 10.6% in October, the first decrease since June 2021. The figure reflected prices for food, alcohol and tobacco rising faster, at a pace of 13.6% annually, even as energy prices slipped to a 34.9% rate of increase from an astronomical 41.5% in October. Out-of-control inflation is being fed by high energy prices caused by Russia largely cutting off natural gas over the war in Ukraine as well as bottlenecks in supplies of raw materials and parts and rebounding demand after COVID-19 pandemic restrictions ended. Rising prices have h

Hero MotoCorp to hike prices from Dec 1 due to inflationary costs

The country's largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp on Friday said it will increase the prices of its motorcycles and scooters by up to Rs 1,500, with effect from December 1. The price will increase up to Rs 1,500, and the exact quantum of the hike will vary by specific models and markets, the company said in a statement. "The upward revision of the prices of our motorcycles and scooters has been necessitated due to overall inflationary costs," Hero MotoCorp Chief Financial Officer Niranjan Gupta said. The company will continue to provide innovative financing solutions in order to cushion the impact on the customers, he added. "We have also put in place accelerated savings programmes, which will help us to offset any further cost impact, and drive improvement in margins," the two-wheeler major said. Moving forward, the economic indicators are favourable to a growth in demand, and the company expects industry volumes to pick up in coming quarters, it added.

Global shares mixed as investors eye China covid crisis, Japan inflation

Global shares were mixed Friday as worries deepened about the regional economy and Japan reported higher-than-expected inflation. France's CAC 40 was little changed, inching down less than 0.1 per cent to 6,704.00. Germany's DAX slipped 0.1 per cent to 14,524.48. Britain's FTSE 100 gained 0.1 per cent to 7,473.46. The future for the S&P 500 gained 0.2 per cent while that for the Dow industrials was up 0.1 per cent. Investors have their eyes on China's lockdowns and restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus infections, as the direction China takes will have great impact on the rest of Asia. China has been expanding pandemic lockdowns, including in a city where factory workers making Apple's iPhone clashed with police this week, as its number of COVID-19 cases hits a daily record. Across China, the number of new cases reported Thursday was 31,444, the highest since the virus was first detected in late 2019. Reopening policies have pivoted in China, which will be a gradual ...

India to grow at moderately brisk rate, inflation to ease: FinMin

India is well placed to grow at a "moderately brisk rate" in the coming years on the back of macroeconomic stability, despite global monetary tightening, a finance ministry report said on Thursday. It further said inflationary pressures will ease in the coming months with the arrival of kharif crops and at the same time job opportunities will increase with improvement in business prospects. The 'Monthly Economic Review for October 2022' also cautioned that the US monetary tightening is a "future risk" which could lead to dip in stock prices, weaker currencies and higher bond yields, resulting in higher borrowing costs for many governments around the world. It said a rapid deterioration in global growth prospects, high inflation, and worsening financial conditions have increased fears of an impending global recession. The spillovers of the global slowdown may dampen India's exports businesses outlook. However, resilient domestic demand, a re-invigorated investment cycle along with .

Paris 2024 organizers say budget likely to increase 'because of inflation'

The operating budget for the 2024 Paris Olympics is expected to go up by 10%, in part because of high inflation, organizers said Tuesday. The organizing committee, known as COJO, had an original operating budget of around 4 billion euros ($4.1 billion) but will present a revised figure at a board meeting next month that is expected to reach 4.4 billion euros ($4.5 billion). Organizers said half the extra money is needed to cover the impact of inflation, while some will go toward additional expenses for the opening ceremony on the Seine river and costs such as human resources and cybersecurity. The overall budget for the Paris Olympics, including the cost of building and renovating venues, is about 8 billion euros ($8.2 billion) and has already gone up from its original estimate. On the other hand, organizers expect to generate more income from tickets sales than initially expected and said they have already secured 80% of the 1.1 billion euros in revenues from partnership deals the
