'Centre to make unique identifier mandatory for construction workers'

The government on Wednesday said it will make a unique identifier mandatory for all building and construction workers across the country to ensure that migrant workers' rights are protected. This identifier, which will be linked to Aadhaar and integrated into the e-Shram database, will facilitate the portability of benefits. It doesn't matter if anyone is in Delhi today or Mumbai tomorrow, the family's entitlements should remain accessible, Labour Secretary Arti Ahuja said. The senior official made the remarks while addressing the "The Migration Conclave", organised by the All India Organisation of Employers (AIOE) and FICCI, with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the national capital. The upcoming addendum, expected to be released within the next week, will further elaborate on these reforms. Ahuja addressed the challenges posed by the increasing use of unregistered outsourced labour through contractors. The four labour codes will require contractors

India should be cautious on labour provisions in FTA negotiations: Experts

India needs to follow a cautious approach while negotiating labour provisions in free trade agreements (FTAs) as those could have potential repercussions on domestic manufacturing and overall trade competitiveness, experts say. International trade experts claimed that in a significant shift from its longstanding stance, India has begun to engage on labour issues in its trade negotiations with the UK, European Union, and the US-led Indo Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF). Inclusion of these issues in trade pacts could have negative impacts, they said, adding that the recent US presidential memorandum of Joe Biden on worker rights indicates a deepening focus on labour standards in trade deals. Negotiations are on fast track with a comprehensive trade agreement with the UK, which seeks to promote trade in goods, services and two-way investments. Think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Ajay Srivastava said that such provisions could erode the competitive advant

The employer also failed to pay three workers at least the federal minimum wage by not keeping an accurate record of hours worked. Their actions violated the Fair Labour Standards Act, it said. Following the investigation, the department recovered USD 71,047 (approx Rs 58,69,438) in back wages and liquidated damages for 25 workers, the press release said. Employers have a legal

Gen AI can displace creative labour; position on copyrights unclear: ASCI

Usage of generative AI tools in advertising can lead to displacement of creative labour, the Advertising Standards Council of India warned on Tuesday. The self regulatory organisation for the industry recommended a few steps to mitigate the impact, including enhancing capabilities of human labour and investing in human upskilling especially on editorial oversight and compliance. In a white paper produced in association with law firm Khaitan & Co, ASCI said that the accessibility of generative AI services raises concerns about the potential displacement of creative labour. It said that using AI tools for creating copies of advertisements, marketing materials, and promotional content can be more cost-effective compared to employing copywriters. A slew of companies, including OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Bard and Adobe Firefly, are offering competitive pricing or even free access during beta testing, it added. The white paper comes within weeks of a strike by writers in the US over the .
