Platform aggregators get 3 months to complete registration process
The government has invited platform aggregators to register their gig workers on the e-Shram portal that could help them access various social security benefits. This registration is crucial to ensure workers' access to social welfare schemes, the Ministry of Labour and Employment in a statement said, adding that aggregators will help develop an accurate registry of beneficiaries. "The Ministry of Labour & Employment has taken another major step in extending social security benefits to gig and platform workers by inviting platform aggregators to register their workers on the e-Shram portal," it said. The e-Shram portal serves as a nationwide database of unorganised workers, designed to provide them with access to social security and welfare schemes. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday said the ministry will move a Cabinet note on the employment-linked incentive (ELI) scheme announced in the Union Budget 2024-25 in July. The minister emphasised upon the importance of a robust mechanism to ensure that the benefits of the ELI Scheme reach the true beneficiaries. "The ministry is finalising a Cabinet note on ELI scheme and it will be soon placed before the Cabinet for approval," he told reporters here. Tripura Labour Minister Tinku Roy on Thursday claimed that 20,000 people have been recruited in various government departments in the last three years. The national database of informal sector workers eSharm portal has crossed the 30-crore registrations milestone in a period of three years, the labour ministry said on Monday. This achievement highlights the social impact and the government's commitment to support unorganised workers across the country, a labour ministry statement said. According to the statement, the Ministry of Labour & Employment (MoLE) launched the eShram portal on August 26, 2021. In three years since its launch, eShram has registered more than 30 crore unorganised workers, showcasing its rapid and widespread adoption among the unorganised workers, it stated. The government envisages to establish the eShram portal as a "One-Stop-Solution" for the country's unorganised workers. During the Budget speech 2024-25 it announced that, "a comprehensive integration of eShram portal with other portals will facilitate such One-Stop-Solution." Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has added 21.67 lakh new workers under its ESI scheme in June 2024, which is about 7 per cent higher as compared to the year-ago period, showed the latest payroll data. The ESIC had added 20.27 lakh new members in June 2023, a labour ministry statement said. Of the total 21.67 lakh employees added during the month, 10.58 lakh workers accounting for around 49 per cent of the total registrations belong to the age group of up to 25 years, it said. Also, the net enrolment of female members was 4.32 lakh in June 2024. Besides, a total of 55 transgender employees got registered under the ESI scheme in June 2024. As many as 13,483 new establishments were brought under the social security ambit of the ESI scheme in June 2024, thus ensuring social security to more workers. The payroll data is provisional since the data generation is a continuous exercise.
