Three criminals held with firearms

Three history-sheeters have been arrested from Thane district in Maharashtra for allegedly possessing country-made firearms and bullets, police said Sunday. At least 12 bullets, a pistol and a country-made revolver were seized from Babu Mohite, Mushtaq Alim Sayyed and Bablu Jaiswal from Cavindra village Saturday night, a Thane Rural police official said. The trio have various cases like murder, theft and burglary pending against them in Mumbai and the metropolitan region, he said. A case has been registered under sections of the Arms Act and Bombay Police Act. Further investigation is underway.

Army man found hanged in Jammu, suicide suspected

An Army man was found hanged from a tree on the outskirts of Jammu city, officials said Sunday. Signalman Yogesh was found hanged a few metres from his barrack in Nagrota area, they said. The body has been recovered and a case registered, they said. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide. The jawan belongs to Meerut district in UP.

Sebi wants 10% mandatory deposit before appeals at SAT against its orders

With an aim to check frivolous appeals against its orders with the sole aim of delaying their execution, capital market regulator Sebi is seeking a mandatory deposit of 10 per cent of the penalty amount before filing of any appeal before the appellate tribunal. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has sought an amendment to the Sebi Act to provide for a "pre-deposit" by any entity seeking to challenge its order relating to a monetary penalty or orders relating to refund, recovery, disgorgement and compounding, officials said. The regulator is of the view that many a times provision to file an appeal before the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) is used as a device to delay the execution of the Sebi order. "To curb such a practice, a new provision of pre-deposit needs to be inserted in the section of the Sebi Act that allows filing of appeal before the SAT against orders involving quantifiable money as a penalty, refund, recovery, disgorgement or impounding," an official .

Police official shoots himself accidentally, dies

A Sub Inspector was killed after he accidentally fired a shot while cleaning his service revolver, the police said on Sunday.The deceased identified as Vipin Kumar was posted in the Crime Investigation Agency of Jalandhar Police."The incident occurred at around 11:30 PM on Saturday. The family told us that Kumar was at his residence in Model House when they heard a gunshot. The shot was accidentally fired by Kumar while he was cleaning his service revolver," said Kamaljeet Singh, the investigating officer in the case.After the receipt of information about the incident, a police team reached the spot and took the body into their possession."The body has now been sent for post mortem and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law," Singh added.

Sexagenarian madrassa teacher held for sexually abusing minors

A 63-year-old madrassa teacher has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing children after luring them with sweets, police said here on Sunday.The accused, identified as Yusuf, a resident of Kochi's Aluva, was employed at a local mosque in the district. He was arrested from Kodungallur in Thrissur on Friday.During the police interrogation, it was revealed that he lured minors with sweets and then sexually assaulted them at a private room when the main Imam of the mosque was away.It was also revealed that he only trapped children below the age of 10 as they were an easy target."The matter came to the light when a student narrated the ordeal to his parents, who then took up the matter with the mosque management following which a complaint was filed and a case was registered," police said in a release.Police said that the teacher used to invite the student to his room on the pretext of teaching him the lessons of the Quran and then abused the boy.Upon sustained interrogation, police .

Gang of five robbers nabbed in Ghaziabad

Murad Nagar Police have arrested a gang of five robbers from the bypass road in Surana village here, police said Sunday. Muntrim, Someen, Kaley, Nabi and Amir, all natives of Baghpat district, were arrested Saturday night from the bypass road, which connects Murad Nagar with Baghpat, and 300 bags of stolen cement were recovered from them, they added. Two country-made pistols and three live cartridges were also seized from their possession, they said. Wife kept under house arrest by kin, alleges Dalit man in Kerala

A 28-year-old Dalit man has complained that his wife was forcibly being kept under "house arrest" by her relatives for marrying a person from a lower caste. Shaji, a native of Pattambi in Palakkad district, said he married a woman from Ezhava community in Malappuram on May 2, defying stiff opposition by her kin. Though her relatives had registered a police complaint saying she was missing, the woman had told the law enforcers she wanted to live with her husband. Based on her statement, police had let her go with him last month, Shaji told a television channel. "But, soon after that, her relatives forcibly took her to her parents' house and she has been kept under house arrest there since then," he said. 2 cops killed after car hits their motorcycle in Bareilly

Two policemen were killed when a speeding luxury car hit their motorcycle in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, police said on Sunday. The accident occurred late Saturday night in Fatehganj on the Lucknow-Delhi road, they said. Sub-inspector Rajveer Singh (45) and head constable Rajneesh Kumar (35) died on the spot after the speeding car hit their motorcycle near a roadside eatery, police said. Youth stabbed to death in Kota over old enmity

A 19-year-old youth was stabbed to death in Rajasthan's Kota city over old enmity following which five people have been booked for the murder, police said on Sunday. The incident occurred on Saturday night in Gobariya Bawadi in Vishavkarma Nagar area here, they said. A case of murder has been registered against five people, however, no arrests have been made so far, SHO Anantpura police station Narendra Pareek said. The victim Ajay Giri, resident of Gobariya Bawadi, was returning home from his father's liquor shop at 10 pm when the five accused attacked him with sharp weapons and fled, Sub Inspector Bharatraj said. Giri sustained serious injuries on his chest and was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, the SI said. Union minister Naik likely to appear before court as witness in cheating case against former staffer

Union Ayush Minister Shripad Yesso Naik is likely to appear before a court here on Monday as a witness in a cheating case registered against his former staffer. The case will be heard before Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Panaji, Artikumari Naik. Lawyer Aires Rodrigues, who is representing the complainant Mervin Fernandes in the case, said the minister is expected to appear before the court on Monday. The minister's former staffer, Vinod Desai, was booked last year under section 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly demanding Rs 6 lakh from Fernandes under the pretext of providing him a job in the Goa government. Couple found dead in Lucknow rented flat, police begins probe

A married couple was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Kalyanpur area here of the state capital on Saturday.The body of husband and wife were found inside a room of the rented flat in which they were living.Lucknow, SSP Kalanidhi Naithani who was on the incident spot told reporters, "We got information that the dead bodies of a husband and wife were found inside a flat. Cricket betting racket busted, two held in Kolkata

A cricket betting racket was busted and two persons were arrested from the central part of the city's Jorashanko area, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Kolkata Police conducted a raid at a building in Rabindra Sarani under Jorashanko police station limits and arrested two persons for allegedly being part of the racket late Saturday evening, they said. Two mobile phones, one television set and over Rs 1.2 lakh were recovered from the duo's possession, a senior police officer said.
