Man who impersonated Saudi prince to steal gets 18 years

A man who repeatedly impersonates Saudi royals to con investors and live a lavish lifestyle has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a ruse that fell apart when a victim saw him eating pork, which is prohibited in Islam. Anthony Gignac, 48, received the sentence Friday in Miami for stealing at least USD 8 million while pretending to be "Sultan Bin Kahlid Al-Saud." He bought a Ferrari, Rolex watches and rented a condo on an exclusive South Florida island with his loot. He pleaded guilty in March to wire fraud, impersonating a diplomat and other crimes. The Miami Herald reports that US District Judge Cecilia Altonaga called him a "mastermind." Juvenile held for killing sister-in-law, her minor son

A juvenile was apprehended for allegedly killing his sister-in-law and her minor son after she resisted his attempts to sexually assault her in central Delhi's Prem Nagar area, police said Saturday. The juvenile, a native of Muzaffarpur district in Bihar, used to sell vegetables in the area. He was staying with the deceased's family for the past 20 days, they said. On Thursday, the bodies of the 26-year-old woman and her four-year-old son were found at their rented accommodation. The woman's throat was slit with a sharp object and she was lying in a pool of blood. Her son was found hanging from a ceiling fan, police said. New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): Delhi Police have arrested a man and his live-in partner for brutally murdering her own four-year-old son whom she shared with her estranged husband. Gold in paste form seized from two passengers at Hyd airport

Gold, weighing over 1.5 kg, was seized in separate cases from two passengers who arrived at the international airport here,official sources said Saturday. Customs personnel recovered gold in paste form allegedly from a passenger who arrived from Abu Dhabi in the early hours of Saturday, they said. The gross weight of the paste was around 1.5 kg, they said. In the other case, a passenger, who arrived from Dubai on Friday, had allegedly concealed gold in paste form in his rectum. The gold weighed over 405 gm and was valued at Rs 13,08,215, the sources added.

National-level swimmer hangs self

A national-level swimmer from Pune in Maharashtra, Sahil Joshi, allegedly committed suicide at his residence in Kothrud area, police said Saturday. According to police, Joshi, 21, hanged himself from the ceiling in his house on Friday afternoon when his parents were away. No suicide note was found at the spot, said an officer attached to Kothrud police station. Police suspected a personal reason behind the extreme step. The deceased was pursuing MBBS from a city-based college. The incident came to light when Joshi's father tried to contact his son from office, but his calls went unanswered, he said. Belagavi-based resident arrested in Kalburgi case

In a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of Kannada litterateur MM Kalburgi, the Special Investigation Team Saturday said it has arrested a 27-year-old man from Belagavi. The SIT said in a statement that it arrested Praveen Prakash Chatur, a resident of Belagavi, Friday. A court has remanded him in police custody till June 7, the SIT said. Kalburgi was shot dead on August 30, 2015 at his residence in Dharwad by two assailants who fled in a motorcycle. The Supreme Court had on December 11 last year favoured a CBI probe into the murders of Kalburgi, social activist Govind Pansare (in Maharashtra) and journalist Gauri Lankesh.

Girl commits suicide after being scolded by mother

A 14-year-old girl reportedly hanged herself after being scolded by her mother for playing outside in Jhalawar district of Rajasthan Saturday, police said. According to the police, the minor was scolded by her mother for playing under the scorching sun. The girl rushed inside and hanged herself from the ceiling of the house. Jitendra Singh Shekhawat, SHO, Kelwada police station said the class 7 student was a native of Bihar's Darbhanga district. Her father worked as a daily wage labourer. Man sets girl on fire for rejecting his advances

A 17-year-old girl was set ablaze allegedly by a man after she rejected his advances at Semiliguda in Odisha's Koraput district, police said Saturday. The girl, a second-year engineering (diploma) student, suffered critical burn injuries, they said. The accused Gopi Khemundu, of Ganjana village, was obsessed with the girl and angry after she turned down his proposal, said Sunabeda Sub-Divisional Police Officer Niranjan Behera. Guj: 150 kg ganja seized

Local police Saturday seized 150 kg ganja, estimated to worth Rs 45 lakh, and arrested two persons. Police intercepted a mini-truck on Jetalpur bridge in Narol locality on a tip-off that a large consignment of ganja was being smuggled to Ahmedabad from Surat, a crime branch official said, adding that they found bags filled with the contraband in the vehicle. Police have arrested Dahyabhai Bhati and the vehicle driver Ravi under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said.
