: Assets worth Rs 2.25 crore allegedly belonging to an official working in the transport office have been unearthed, anti-corruption bureau sleuths said Thursday. On Wednesday, A Praveen Kumar was caught in his office in Vikarabad district of Telangana, when he demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 10,000, the sleuths said. The money was accepted through his two private agents from the complainant for doing an official favour and the trio was arrested, they said. On information, a case of disproportionate assets was registered. The sleuths had conducted a search at Kumar's house and cash to the tune of Rs 45 lakh, gold ornaments weighing 310 gm besides documents of immovable properties, all worth about Rs 2.25 crore, were unearthed, a senior official of the bureau, they said.
An Egyptian court has ordered the release of Al-Jazeera journalist Mahmoud Hussein, detained since 2016 on allegations of spreading false news and defaming Egypt's reputation. Hussein, an Egyptian journalist working for the Qatar-based satellite network, was detained at the Cairo airport in December 2016, when he arrived on a family vacation from Doha. No official charges were ever raised against him and Hussein didn't stand trial. The Doha-based Al-Jazeera reported the news on its website Thursday, saying Hussein "was arrested without formal charges and kept in prison for 881 days." Austrian police say that a woman and her two daughters who were found dead at their Vienna apartment earlier this week appear to have starved to death. The bodies of the 45-year-old mother and her daughters, both aged 18, were found in municipal housing in the Austrian capital's Floridsdorf district on Tuesday. Authorities ordered an autopsy. Police said Thursday it suggested that the three starved to death and that they died at the end of March or the beginning of April. They said there were no signs that the women were poisoned. Investigators earlier said that the apartment door was locked and that there was no sign of a break-in or of other violence.
A Delhi court will pronounce its order on May 29 on whether to grant pardon to Indrani Mukerjea, an accused in the INX Media corruption case in which former Union minister P Chidambaram is also an accused. German prosecutors said Thursday they had fined car parts supplier Bosch 90 million euros (USD 100 million) over its role supplying components in the "dieselgate" emissions cheating scandal. Stuttgart investigators "levied a fine against Robert Bosch GmbH for negligently infringing its quality control obligations," they said in a statement, adding that the German company had agreed not to contest the fine. The 90 million-euro sum is made up of a penalty of two million, while the remaining 88 million covers the estimated economic benefit Bosch gained from the crimes. A Rajasthan police head constable was Thursday arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 5,000, officials said. Head Constable Bala Ram, posted with Merta Road police station in Nagaur district, had demanded the bribe from one Ramkishore to submit a favourable final report in a case lodged against him and his friends, an ACB official said. A woman in her 20's was allegedly tortured and raped by five persons including a doctor and a suspended police constable in the city, police said Thursday. The accused left the woman in a semi-naked position on the Agra road here on Wednesday, they said. The woman alleged that she was tortured and gang-raped on Tuesday night, they added. "A case has been registered against five persons -- Kapil Sharma, Deepesh Chaturvedi, Dr Anurag and two others who are unidentified," DCP (East) Rahul Jain said. An Indian national is among 18 sailors arrested in Nigeria for allegedly attempting to illegally export stolen crude oil to Ghana, according to media reports.
