A shootout between rival gangs in western Mexico killed at least nine people and wounded four, authorities said Wednesday. Prosecutors in the state of Michoacan said the confrontation occurred near the city of Uruapan. Police in northern Mexico have freed 24 kidnapped Cuban and Central American migrants and arrested five Hondurans accused of abducting them. Drug and kidnap gangs in Mexico frequently target migrants, extorting money by forcing them to call relatives in the United States to get money. But the kidnappers are seldom also migrants. Prosecutors in the northern border state of Sonora said Wednesday that the migrants were freed after one of them managed to make a call to police. Justices Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel and Ajay Kumar Mittal were Thursday appointed chief justices of Delhi and Meghalaya high courts respectively. While Justice Patel is currently posted at the Jharkhand High Court, Justice Mittal is with the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Justice Patel will be the chief justice of the Delhi High Court from June 7 and Justice Mittal will head the Meghalaya High Court from May 28, separate notifications issued by the Law Ministry said Thursday. Talwant Singh, Rajnish Bhatnagar, Asha Menon and Brijesh Sethi were also appointed judges of the Delhi High Court, the Law Ministry said. A woman has alleged that she was raped on April 28 by a stalker in the presence of two other males in a moving car, said police here on Wednesday.Police registered an FIR registered on April 29 on the statement of the victim that she was being stalked from April 17 onwards by a person. Four new judges were appointed to the Supreme Court Wednesday, raising their number to 31, the full sanctioned strength. As of now, the apex court is functioning with 27 judges. The sanctioned strength is 31, including the Chief Justice. In the recent past, this is for the first time that the SC will have a full sanctioned strength. The four appointed are justices Aniruddha Bose, A S Bopanna, B R Gavai and Surya Kant. The names of justices Bose and Bopanna were earlier returned by the government to the SC collegium citing seniority and representation of regions as the reasons. But in its resolution passed earlier this month, the collegium had reiterated its recommendation to elevate justices Bose and Bopanna to the apex court, observing that nothing adverse has been found regarding their competence, conduct or integrity. The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) Wednesday stayed Sebi rulings that directed the National Stock Exchange to disgorge profits of over Rs 625 crore in the co-location case. However, the tribunal directed the bourse to deposit Rs 625 crore with Sebi in two weeks. The exchange would have to continue to deposit revenues from the co-location facility to an escrow account. On Tuesday, the NSE moved the tribunal challenging Sebi's rulings against it in the co-location case. In April, Sebi directed the exchange to disgorge profits of over Rs 1,000 crore and imposed a six-month ban on launching new derivative products besides action against other entities, including some current and former officials. The amount includes disgorgement of Rs 625 crore profit derived from dissemination of data in the co-location case. The tribunal has also ordered the exchange to initiate an enquiry against its staff to find out if they had given any treatment preferential in terms of access to market data ..

The father of the missing girl had filed a petition in the court seeking transfer of the case to CBI.In another case, CBI announced a reward of Rs. 10 lakh for providing actionable information on the murder of one Rashmi Bhave who was a resident of Gandhinagar and was murdered at her residence in February 2013.CBI had registered this case on the orders of Gujarat High Court and taken over the investigation of the case.
The National Human Rights Commission Wednesday sent a notice to the Himachal Pradesh government and the state's police chief over reports of death of a class 6 student due to alleged delay in providing medical care to him after he was hit on the head by a fellow student on the premises of a government school in Kangra.
