Complete probe into cases of rape of minors within a month: UP DGP

Taking note of the incidents of rape of minor girls, the Uttar Pradesh Police today directed the investigators concerned to complete the probe within a month and submit charge sheet. "DGP O P Singh has directed all ADGs to visit spots with senior officers in cases related to rape of girls up to 12 years of age and collect scientific proof. Attempts should be made to complete the probe within a month and submit charge sheet in the court so that the accused do not get bail," DIG (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar said. "It should be started as a campaign and it will be reviewed from time to time. It will help in solving cases and also give a strong message to the society," the Director General of Police (DGP) said in his directive. The DIG said that in March, 25 rape accused were awarded punishment by courts in Uttar Pradesh.

Member of international drug cartel arrested from outer Delhi

A 27-year-old man, suspected to be a member of an international drug cartel, was arrested and 1 kg of heroin worth Rs 4 crore was seized from him, police said today. The Special Cell was working on obtaining information about an international narcotic drug cartel that has been active in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, etc. It was learnt that the members of this cartel were involved in the supply of high grade heroin in NCR, UP, Punjab here. The heroin was smuggled from Afghanistan and Pakistan, police said. On April 23, it was learnt that one Gurveer Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, Punjab would come near Mukarba Chowk on the outer Ring Road. A team was formed and a trap was laid and he was nabbed while he was in his car and one kg of heroin was seized from him, police said. Minor girl raped by juvenile in madrassa

A 10-year-old girl was taken from her home in East Delhi's Ghazipur to a madrassa in Ghaziabad and raped there by a juvenile, the police said today. The incident triggered protests in the area with locals demanding that the madrassa cleric be arrested for his alleged involvement in the matter. Police said that he was being questioned. The police were informed on April 21 by the girl's father that his daughter had gone missing after she went to the market. Police registered a case and during investigation, found a CCTV footage in which the accused was seen taking the girl along with him, they added. The police traced the juvenile to a madrassa where he studied and apprehended him. The girl was recovered from there, the police said. Nothing will happen if Nirbhaya fund not properly used: SC

The Supreme Court today said "nothing would materialise" if the money from the Nirbhaya fund is not properly spent on women's welfare. "We have been spending time for the benefit of women and children. Unless the fund is spent, we can go on talking about it, but nothing will materialise," a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta observed and added, "there are so many things which we have to do for the welfare of women and children". The apex court sought details of the funds allocated to the states by the Centre under the scheme, announced by the Centre in 2013 after the December 16, 2012 gang-rape and murder case in Delhi to support initiatives on women's safety across the country. It said there was no lack of funds under the scheme but the issue was of its proper utilisation. Stolen cigarettes worth Rs 46 lakh seized, nine held

Police today claimed to have busted a cigarette-theft racket with the arrest of nine persons and recovery of stolen cigarettes worth around Rs 46 lakh. The racket was unearthed on the night of April 8 when a police team came across a truck standing in a suspicious manner at Uttar Shiv in Thane district and found that the cartons of cigarettes that it was carrying were stolen, an officer said. "Shil Daighar police found the truck parked in a suspicious manner at Uttar Shiv. During the search, they found that the vehicle was carrying 186 cartons of cigarettes worth Rs 15.50 lakh that were actually meant to be exported to Saudi Arabia," ACP (Crime) N T Kadam of the Crime Branch said. Man accused of killing wife moves HC for info about her loan account

A man, accused of killing his wife, has moved the Delhi High Court seeking information from a public sector bank regarding a loan obtained by his late spouse prior to her death. The man has challenged an order of the Central Information Commission (CIC) rejecting his plea to direct the Central Bank of India to provide information about the loan account of his late wife. ED set to confiscate Rs 15ooo-cr assets under new fugitive offenders ordinance

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is set to "confiscate" assets worth over Rs 15,000 crore as part of its first action against absconders such as liquor baron Vijay Mallya and diamantaire Nirav Modi under the recently promulgated Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance. Officials said the agency has begun the work to bring together the existing cases of high-value fugitives and bank loan defaulters and it will soon approach various special anti-money laundering courts in the country to get orders issued against them under the new ordinance. They said the money laundering cases against Vijay Mallya, who is now based in London, Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choski, Winsome Diamond company promoter Jatin Mehta and others are expected to be picked up first for action. Two mobiles recovered from Ambala Central jail

Two mobile phones were recovered from Ambala Central jail today after an unknown person threw a packet from outside the prison's boundary wall, police said. They said that some unknown person had thrown a packet from outside the jail boundary wall in the jail premises which was recovered by jail warden Mohan Singh. On the complaint of jail authorities, a case was registered against unknown person in the Baldevnagar police station at Ambala City. He later handed over the packet to the jail superintendent and two mobile phones, two sim cards and two batteries were found in the packet. Asaram rape case verdict by Jodhpur court tomorrow, MHA asks 3 states to tightern security

Security was stepped up today in Jodhpur where prohibitory orders have already been clamped ahead of tomorrow's trial court verdict in the alleged rape of a teenager by self-styled godman Asaram who faces a minimum term of 10 years if convicted. Apprehending a threat to law and order, the Centre asked Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana governments to tighten security and deploy additional forces as the three states have a large number of followers of the 77-year-old Asaram. Defacement of property: Court discharges Dy CM Sisodia, Vishwas

A Delhi court today discharged Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP leader Kumar Vishwas in a case of allegedly defacing public property in 2013. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal granted the relief to Sisodia, Vishwas and one Mukesh Hudda, noting that the police had filed the charge sheet after a long delay of over a year and five months. The investigating officer (IO) also did not mention in the final report any reason for the delay, the court noted. "However, in a seperate application, he has stated that he had misplaced the file and when one fine day, he found that file in his box in other files, when he filed this charge sheet in the court. Class 11 student gang-raped in Noida, one accused arrested

Gold biscuits worth Rs 1.5 cr seized in Manipur

Customs sleuths today seized gold biscuits worth Rs 1.5 crore from a person in Manipur's Imphal East district, an official said. Assistant Commissioner of Customs, R K Darendrajit said the man was arrested from Lamlong area in Imphal East district by the personnel of Custom's anti-smuggling unit and gold biscuits worth Rs 1.5 crore were seized from his possession. Darendrajit said that Manipur despite its small size has become an important part of the route through which the yellow metal is smuggled from Myanmar and then transported to other parts of the country. In March this year 97 gold bars worth an estimated Rs 4.8 crore were seized from a vehicle by Assam Rifles in the hill district of Tengnoupal bordering Myanmar.

SC asks Centre, states to work for eradication of leprosy

The Supreme Court today asked the Centre and the states to "rise to the occasion" and work for eradication of "curable" leprosy, besides removing the archaic provisions from 119 laws that discriminate against and stigmatise those affected. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said with the advancements in medical science, it has been an admitted position that leprosy is curable and mere deletion of legal provisions, which are discriminatory against the affected persons, will not help. "The Centre and states shall rise to the occasion and act to eradicate the disease. Two shot at by unidentified men in Rohini

Two men were today shot at allegedly by unidentified assailants, who wanted to rob a cash van in the Metro Vihar area of Rohini, but their attempt was thwarted by one of the victims, police said. The van had stopped outside an ATM to replenish it with cash. While the cashier was inside, two men came there and allegedly fire at him and the security guard, they said.
