Jaipur divisional commissioner to probe Alwar rape case
The Rajasthan government has appointed Jaipur Divisional Commissioner KC Verma as the investigating officer in the Alwar gang rape case. "The state government has given the task to investigate the case to me. I will remain available for public hearing at the office of the subdivisional officer in Thanagazi on May 16 and at the Alwar circuit house on May 17," Verma said. He said any individual or organisation could come forward to give views and present a memorandum related to the case from 10 am to 5 pm. On April 26, a woman was gangraped in front of her husband at an isolated place on the Thanagazi-Alwar bypass. The accused had filmed the crime and circulated it on social media. Police had delayed registering a case, saying they were busy with the elections. The FIR in the case was registered on May 2. Police have arrested six people in the case. The Alwar SP was removed while the Thanagazi police station SHO was suspended after the case.
Didn't get any satidfactory answer regarding Hapur gang rape case: NCW Chairman
National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma on Tuesday said she didn't get any satisfactory answer regarding the Hapur gang rape case, hence she has issued a letter to the Uttar Pradesh DGP to take strict and immediate action in the case."I didn't get any satisfactory answer that is why I have sent a team to meet the lady, her relatives and the doctors. My first priority is to see if she is being treated well or not. According to Hapur SP, the victim first filed the complaint in 2010. So, our priority is to see what the complaint was, what actions police took on it, or why they didn't take any action. SC says no to urgent listing of Torque Pharma MD's plea against rejection of nomination
The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to accord urgent hearing on a plea filed by PS Chhatwal, managing director of Torque Pharmaceutical Pvt Ltd, whose nomination papers for Chandigarh constituency as an Independent candidate were rejected. A vacation bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna said that Chhatwal's plea would come up for hearing in due course of time. "Once election is announced there is bar from interfering in the poll process," the bench said. When Chhatwal's advocate Tarun Khaira said he has a right to contest election, the bench said, "It is the subject matter for Election Commission". The family of a businessman, who was brutally stabbed to death by his neighbours after he objected to their lewd comments about his daughter, has decided to shift to another locality following the "apathetic" behaviour of the locals, some of whom even made videos of the incident. A 52-year-old businessman was stabbed to death allegedly for objecting to lewd comments made by some boys on his daughter in West Delhi's Moti Nagar area, with the man's family members alleging that locals filmed the incident but did not come to his aid. The man's 19-year-old son was also injured in the incident that took place in the early hours of Sunday. A nephew of the deceased, requesting anonymity, said we have been living in Basai Darapur for over a 100 years now. "Our forefathers had settled here more than 400 years ago while the house where we are staying in was bought 100 years ago. It is saddening that our neighbours did not come to our help when we needed them the most," he said. The nephew said .
Nalanda: 8 people arrested after four children escape from juvenile rehabilitation home
Eight people were arrested for negligence of duty after four child prisoners escaped by cutting the rods of the window of a juvenile rehabilitation home in Deepnagar, Nalanda district on Monday.The arrested people included a Superintendent, home guard personnel and cook of the juvenile rehabilitation home.Vrijesh Mishra, the Assistant Director of Child Protection unit said that the escape of the four children meant there was a big lapse in security at the centre.One of the four prisoners who escaped was an accused in the famous Ritik murder case of Ekangarsarai while the rest were from Bhaisasur, Asthawan and Nawada village.Earlier on May 3, many objectionable materials were recovered by the District Collector in a raid conducted at the rehabilitation home. At least five policemen sustained injuries on Tuesday when protesters demanding justice for the Alwar gang rape victims pelted stones in Rajasthan's Dausa district, police said. "The police had to resort to mild cane charging to disperse the agitating mob. Nearly five to six policemen sustained injuries when the mob started pelting stones. DCW takes suo-moto cognisance after man stabbed to death for objecting to lewd comments on daughter
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Tuesday took suo-moto cognisance of reports of the death of a 51-year old man who was stabbed to death allegedly for objecting to lewd comments and gestures made by a group of men on his daughter in West Delhi's Moti Nagar area on May 11.The man's 19-year-old son, who also sustained severe stab injuries in the incident, is currently battling for life at a hospital here.As per the Commission, the incident occurred when the victim and his 24-year-old daughter were returning after visiting the doctor. The alleged harassers passed obscene remarks and gestures at the girl. Karti Chidambaram moves SC seeking return of Rs 10 cr deposited in court registry
Karti Chidambaram, facing criminal cases being probed by the CBI and ED, Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking return of Rs 10 crore which he had earlier deposited in the apex court registry for travelling abroad, saying he had taken the money on loan and was paying interest on it. The matter was mentioned before a vacation bench comprising Justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna which asked Karti's counsel to mention the matter before the regular bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi later. Karti's counsel told the bench that he had earlier deposited Rs 10 crore in the court registry for travelling abroad and since he has returned to India, the money should be returned by the registry. A Delhi court Tuesday sought response from a close aide of corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar on ED's plea seeking to cancel her anticipatory bail in a case related to negotiations favouring foreign private airlines and causing loss to national carrier Air India. The court issued notice to Yasmin Kapoor and directed her to reply by May 20 on the plea moved by the Enforcement Directorate. DRI seizes gold bars worth nearly Rs 8 cr smuggled into India from Myanmar, arrests six
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized gold bars worth nearly Rs eight crore which was smuggled into India from Myanmar, and arrested six people for allegedly being a part of the smuggling racket, according to an official statement issue Tuesday. The gold was smuggled into India from Myanmar through the porous Indo-Myanmar border at Moreh in Manipur. Acting on specific inputs, DRI officials Monday seized 24.15 kg gold bars valued at Rs 7.99 crore from the possession of six people who were travelling by bus from Manipur to Siliguri via Coochbehar, the statement said. The six people who have been arrested are residents of Manipur and were engaged in carrying smuggled foreign-origin gold for quite some time now, the DRI said in the statement. In the last financial year, the DRI had seized over 464 kg of gold within the geographical precincts of West Bengal and Sikkim, smuggled from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan and even China,valued at Rs 145.69 crore in 46 cases.

The Supreme Court Tuesday agreed to hear on May 17 a plea by a candidate of the SP-BSP alliance from Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh seeking protection from arrest in a rape case lodged against him. The matter was mentioned before a vacation bench of justices Indira Banerjee and Sanjiv Khanna by the counsel appearing for petitioner Atul Rai, who is accused of raping a college student from Varanasi.
