Declaring me fugitive offender is like giving 'economic death penalty': Mallya tells HC

Embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya told the Bombay High Court Wednesday that by declaring him a fugitive economic offender and allowing attachment of his assets, a special court had awarded him an "economic death penalty". Mallya made the statement through his counsel Amit Desai before a bench of justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre, during arguments on his plea challenging several provisions of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act that came into existence in August last year. "My debts and the interest on such debts are mounting. I have assets to pay off these debts but the government won't allow the use of these assets to clear the debts. I have no control over my properties," the businessman said. "This is an economic death penalty that has been awarded to me," he said. Desai urged the court to pass an injunction against the proceedings related to confiscation of his assets across the country. The bench, however, refused to grant any interim relief on the petition. K'taka resort brawl: Kampli MLA JN Ganesh granted bail

Karnataka High Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Kampli MLA JN Ganesh, who was arrested for attacking his fellow Congress MLA Anand Singh at a resort in January this year.While granting bail, Justice B A Patil directed Ganesh to furnish a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and two sureties of an equal amount.A special court for people's representatives had rejected Ganesh's bail plea on March 25, following which he moved the Karnataka High Court seeking bail in a criminal case lodged against him.Ganesh, an MLA from Kampli, allegedly assaulted Singh on January 19 following a heated argument at a resort near Bengaluru.Singh was later admitted to a hospital, while Ganesh was suspended on the directions of state Congress president Dinesh Gundu Rao.Following the brawl, Ganesh had absconded and was later nabbed in Gujarat's Somnath city on February 20. He was produced before a district court a day later and has been in judicial custody since then.

Couple, child die as truck hits motorcycle

A couple and one of their children died and another child was injured Wednesday when their motorcycle was hit by a truck from behind in Shajapur district, police said. The victims were on their way from Ujjain to Shajapur to attend a wedding when the accident took place on AB road, said C L Katare, Lal Ghati police station in-charge. Om Prakash Sharma (35), his wife Babita (30) and son Akshat (12) died, while the couple's daughter Akshita (7) was injured. She was admitted to the district hospital here. The family belonged to Ujjain. Police have arrested the truck driver. Further probe is on.

Gujarat gang-rape victim Bilkis Bano thanks SC

Gujarat gang-rape victim Bilkis Bano on Wednesday thanked the Supreme Court for its order to compensate her with Rs 50 lakh."I want to say that I am very thankful to the Supreme Court," she said while addressing a press conference here."It has been a very painful period of 17 years for me," Bano said.On April 23, the top court directed the Gujarat government to pay a compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the victim.Bilkis Bano had sought exemplary compensation from the state government, refusing to accept its offer of Rs 5 lakh.The apex court also directed the state government to provide Bilkis Bano a government job and accommodation as per rules.In March 2002, Bano was gang-raped and left to die alongside 14 members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, during the Gujarat riots. She was five months pregnant when rioters attacked her in Vadodara.

TN govt announces Rs 3 lakh relief to kin of sexual assault

The Tamil Nadu government Wednesday announced a relief of Rs three lakh to the family of a seven year-old girl from Coimbatore, who was allegedly sexually abused and murdered by a man. Chief Minister K Palaniswami recalled that one person has been arrested in connection with "this heinous incident." Expressing grief over the child's death, Palaniswami said he has directed the police officials to ensure due legal punishment for the accused. Extending his sympathies and condolences with the family of the deceased, he said in a statement that "I have directed that a sum of Rs three lakh be provided to them from the Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund." The girl, who went missing on March 24, was found dead near her house the following day, with her limbs tied. The postmortem report revealed she was subjected to sexual assault more than once. The incident had caused a state-wide outrage, even as a man identified as Santhosh, was arrested for alleged sexual assault and murder .

Will go to the root of lawyer's claims of larger conspiracy to frame CJI: SC

The Supreme Court Wednesday said it will go to the root of the alleged conspiracy and sensational claims made by a lawyer that there was a larger conspiracy to frame Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi in the sexual harassment allegations against him. A three-judge special bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra said if fixers continue to work and manipulate the judiciary as claimed, neither this institution nor any of "us" will not survive. As many as 64 candidates out of the total 323 contestants in the fray for the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra are facing serious criminal charges, as per the analysis of their affidavits. ED attaches properties over Rs 40 crore of expelled DMK leader Alagiri's son

The Enforcement Directorate Wednesday made a provisional attachment of 25 moveable and immoveable properties worth over Rs 40 crore belonging to the son of expelled DMK leader M K Alagiri under the money laundering act, an official statement said here. It said the ED has provisionally attached land, buildings in Madurai, Chennai and fixed deposits totalling to Rs 40.34 crore of Olympus Granites Pvt. Ltd. under Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) in the illegal granite mining case. According to the ED, the company's share holders S Nagarajan and Alagiri Dhayanidhi along with other accused, criminally conspired and indulged in illegal mining activities in the adjacent TAMIN leased land and thereby causing wrongful loss to the government and corresponding wrongful gain to themselves. Police arrests Rohit Shekhar Tiwari's wife for his murder, cites turbulent marriage as motive

Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested Rohit Shekhar Tiwari's lawyer wife Apoorva on charges of his murder, citing a "turbulent and unhappy" marriage as the motive, a senior police official said. Rohit Shekhar, the son of the late veteran politician N D Tiwari, was smothered to death on the intervening night of April 15 and 16, an autopsy report said. NGT seeks action taken report on illegal construction in Tughlakabad Extension

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee and the South Delhi Municipal Corporation to submit an action taken report on illegal constructions in the Tughlakabad Extension area here. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel sought the report after perusing a report from a committee comprising representatives of the Central Pollution Control Board and the SDMC. "Let an action taken report be now furnished in respect of stopping of illegal activities, prosecuting the guilty and recovery of compensation for the damage caused to the environment which should be adequate to recover the cost of restoration as well as deterrent," the bench said. The tribunal said that the report may be furnished before August 8 via e-mail. Court rejects plea seeking to bar Thakur from contesting poll

A special NIA court here on Wednesday rejected the application filed by the father of one of the victims of the 2008 Malegaon blast case seeking to bar BJP leader Pragya Singh Thakur from contesting the Lok Sabha election. Malegaon blast accused Thakur, who is currently out on bail, is contesting the Lok Sabha poll from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh on the BJP's ticket. Nisar Sayyad, who lost his son in the blast, moved the court last week, urging it to bar Thakur from contesting the election after the BJP fielded her from Bhopal, where she is locked in a battle with Congress veteran Digvijay Singh. Five held in separate cases of cattle smuggling in Jammu, 62 animals rescued

Five persons were arrested on the charges of bovine smuggling and as many as 62 cattle rescued in Udhampur and Samba districts of the Jammu region, police said Wednesday. A police party intercepted 55 cattle being taken on foot towards Kashmir without a valid permission. They were intercepted near Sangoor Chowk on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Udhampur district Tuesday evening, a police spokesperson said. He said the cattle were rescued and the suspects, Hamid Khan and Mohammad Mashboor, arrested. Two of their accomplice managed to flee and efforts are on to nab them, the spokesman said. He said four more cattle were rescued from nearby Jakhani Chowk in Udhampur on Tuesday. The driver, Ghulam Rasool, was arrested and police also seized the vehicle in which the cattle were being taken, the spokesman said.
