Women body urges Prez to take cognisance of sexual harassment allegations against CJI

President Ram Nath Kovind should take cognisance on his own of the allegations of sexual harassment levelled by a former Supreme Court employee against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, a women's organisation said on Monday. Delhi's 'Pragatisheel Mahila Sangathan', which staged a protest outside the apex court premises, said that the "President should also direct the second in command of judges in the hierarchy of judges of the Supreme Court to get the whole episode, as stated by the complainant, investigated in an impartial and time bound manner". PIL in HC to appoint law officers for 16 jails in Delhi

A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking directions to the state government and the director general (DG) of Tihar Jail to appoint one law officer each in the 16 jails of the national capital in a time-bound manner. The plea is listed for hearing on Tuesday before a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani. The petition, filed by advocate Amit Sahni, alleged that despite the Delhi Prisons Act, 2000 mandating that there shall be a law officer in every prison, at present there is only one law officer for all 16 jails in the state who is stationed at the prison headquarters at Tihar here. It also claimed that from August 2016 to February 2019, no law officer was appointed at the prison headquarters and the legal affairs were dealt with by an officer equivalent to the rank of a deputy superintendent. Missing woman traced in J-K's Rajouri

A 23-year-old woman, who went missing last week, was recovered Monday and handed over to her family in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, police said. The woman, hailing from Manjakote, went missing on April 15 and was traced from Kotli Kalaban village of the border district, additional Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, Liaqat Ali said. He said a missing report was registered in the daily diary and a search was launched to recover her. She was handed over to her legal heirs after completion of legal formalities, the officer said.

PIL seeks direction to Delhi govt to appoint one law officer for every jail

A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking directions to the Delhi government and DG Tihar to ensure compliance of Section 6 of Delhi Prison Act, 2000, by appointing one law officer for every jail in the national capital.Delhi Prison Act, 2000 (Delhi Act No.2 of 2002) was passed by the Legislative Assembly of National Capital Territory of Delhi on November 23, 2000.Section 6 of Delhi Prison Act, 2000 mandates that there shall be a Law Officer for every Jail. Apart from the same, it further mandates that there shall be a Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, a Medical Officer, and a welfare officer for every jail.It is also mentioned that the compliance is done by the respondents in all respect except appointing Law Officer for every jail. SC's 5-judge Constitution bench not to sit this week

A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court which was scheduled to hear certain important cases, including the land acquisition matter from Tuesday, will not sit in this week. According to the notice uploaded on the apex court website, the hearing of cases by the Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was cancelled. Other cases included as to whether lawmakers enjoy immunity from prosecution for accepting bribes to vote in Parliament or an Assembly. "In supersession of earlier notice dated the April 16, 2019 uploaded on the Supreme Court website mentioning that Constitution bench will sit in Chief Justice's court from April 23, 2019, now, take further notice that the Constitution bench will not sit in the week commencing from April 23, 2019," the notice said. SC grants time to ex-Kolkata police chief to reply to CBI's plea in chit-fund scam

The Supreme Court Monday granted time to former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to file his additional reply to the CBI's claim that he withheld information relating to call data records of the accused in the chit fund scam. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, which was to hear the plea of CBI seeking custodial interrogation of Kumar in the chit fund scam, later adjourned the hearing to April 30. "List the matters on April 30 by which time respondent No.3 (Kumar) may file additional affidavit, as prayed," said the bench, also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. Two lawyers' bodies of the Supreme Court on Monday disapproved of the manner in which Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi dealt with the sexual harassment allegations against him, calling it "procedural impropriety" and "violation" of procedures. Wife of lobbyist Deepak Talwar, accused of acting as a middleman in negotiations to favour foreign private airlines and causing loss to national carrier Air India, approached the Delhi High Court Monday seeking direction to the ED to quiz her at her residence and not the agency's office. Nepal's SC directs govt to take action against cattle owners who abandon their cows, oxen

Nepal's top court on Monday directed the government to take action against cattle owners who abandon their cows and oxen when they are of no use to them and left them to die on the streets. The Supreme Court also directed the government to manage and take care of the abandoned cattle. A bench of Justices Ananda Mohan Bhattarai and Puroshuttam Bhandari gave the ruling on a writ petition filed by an NGO Sneha's Care, which moved the court last month demanding management and safety of the abandoned domestic animals. Cow is the national animal of Nepal. Welcoming the court's judgement, Sneha's Care chairperson Sneh Shrestha said animal welfare can be ensured only by effective law enforcement and its effective implementation.

The unprecedented hearing by a three-judge bench following sexual harassment allegations against the CJI by a former apex court employee was a "violation of procedure established by law", the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) said Monday. Two techies arrested for allegedly duping people on the pretext of getting them jobs in the IAF

Two techies were arrested for allegedly duping around 400 people on the pretext of providing jobs in the Indian Air Force (IAF), police said Monday. The accused have been identified as Mahender Singh (30) and Vikash Swami (28). They had allegedly duped people by creating a fake website. Both had done Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) from Rajgarh near Churu in Rajasthan, police said. "A complaint was received from the IAF that unknown people had created a fake website of the department 'www.airforce.onlinerectt.in' and were displaying advertisements for recruitment in the Air Force.
