35-year-old nabbed for killing property dealer in Ghaziabad

A 35-year-old man, who was wanted in a murder case, was arrested from Sultanpuri area here, police said Monday. The accused has been identified as Pardeep (35), a resident of New Vikas Nagar in Ghaziabad, they said. The arrest was made on a tip-off that the accused would come to Sultanpuri to meet his associates, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Seju Kuruvilla said. During interrogation, the accused confessed that he had killed one property dealer over a dispute, the police said. One country-made pistol, two live cartridges and one car were recovered from his possession, they added.

NHAI GM among four arrested by CBI in Rs 27 lakh bribery case

The CBI has arrested four persons, including a general manager of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), for allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 27 lakh for clearing bills, officials said Monday. Gali Sridhar, General Manager (Technical), NHAI, posted in Madurai, Sudhakar Vaduppu, Assistant Manager, Hyderabad-based NSS Infrastructure, private persons Sai Prasad and Pawan, an employee of Vaduppu have been arrested by the CBI, they said. "It was also alleged that the general manager (Technical), National Highways Authority of India Limited (NHAI) demanded a bribe of Rs 27 lakh in Hyderabad for clearing bills of the said private firm pertaining to ongoing work at NH 7 Madurai Kanyakumari stretch of Tamil Nadu," a CBI spokesperson said here. Mumbai South LS poll: Deora rakes up Sawant's criminal cases

The Congress' Mumbai South Lok Sabha candidate Milind Deora Monday referred to criminal charges against his opponent and sitting Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant and asked voters if they wanted to be represented by a person with such a record. Pointing to Sawant's affidavit, Deora said there are 13 criminal charges against the Shiv Sena leader and demanded that the sitting MP explain if he tried to "abuse and misuse" his influence in the Maharashtra government to get the cases withdrawn. SC rejects plea against construction of Jayalalithaa's memorial at Marina beach

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea challenging the construction of a memorial of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa at Marina beach in Chennai. A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna said that it is not inclined to interfere with the Madras high court order of January 23. "Having heard the petitioner-in-person and upon perusing the relevant material, we are not inclined to interfere. The special leave petition is accordingly dismissed. Opium worth over Rs 2cr seized in Rajasthan

Two people were arrested in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh district on Monday after 26.55 quintal opium, worth of Rs 2.5 crore, was found in their possession, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a house in Ummedpura village under the Badi Sadri police station area and recovered the opium and Rs 50,550 cash, an Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) official said. Enquiry strengthens independence of judiciary: Jurist Rakesh Dwivedi on allegations against CJI

An "impartial enquiry alone" would test the veracity of sexual harassment allegations against CJI Ranjan Gogoi and strengthen the 'Independence of Judiciary', senior advocate and noted jurist Rakesh Dwivedi said Monday. Not enough judges for more Maha family courts needed: Justice

Justice Abhay Oka of the Bombay High Court said Maharashtra needed more family courts but there weren't enough candidates to fill up the post of judges in these courts. He was speaking Sunday evening on the tenth anniversary of Thane Family Court in a function jointly organised by Thane District Courts Bar Association. Maharashtra has 23 family courts presently and the need was to have more, Justice Oka said, adding that each district in the state should have one. The HC had called for applications for the post of judges in family courts but there weren't enough candidates as there were vacancies, he told the gathering. HC grants time to CBI, Michel to file reply on Tihar Jail plea against his phone calls

The Delhi High Court Monday granted more time to Christian Michel, arrested in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case, and the CBI to respond to a plea by Tihar Jail authorities challenging an order allowing him to make international phone calls for 15 minutes in violation of prison rules.
