A law firm founded by an Indian-origin lawyer on Tuesday achieved a USD 1.6 billion settlement for its client, Iran's Bank Mellat, against the UK government to end a 10-year-long legal dispute in the British courts. Zaiwalla & Co LLP, a sanctions specialist law firm based in London, won the damages in the Bank Mellat versus HM Treasury case dating back to 2009 when the British government imposed sanctions preventing Iran's largest private bank from doing business with the UK's financial sector because of alleged links to the country's nuclear programme. The UK High Court was informed of the settlement as it was set to begin a five-week trial in the case on Tuesday. The Madras High Court Tuesday granted 15-day leave to S A Basha, a life convict in the 1998 Coimbatore serial blasts, from June 20 to July 4. The matter relates to a plea filed by Basha's daughter, Mubeena, seeking a court direction for a leave of 30 days. A division bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Nirmal Kumar granted leave to Basha from 10 am of June 20 till 5 pm of July 4. R Sankarasubbu, the counsel of Mubeena, submitted that she and her mother were suffering from various ailments and therefore the court may sympathetically consider the plea made on behalf of the detenu for a grant of 30 days leave. The Additional public prosecutor (APP), who appeared on behalf of the state, submitted that the detenu after conviction, came out of prison either by way of leave or parole 162 times till 2008. : The National Investigation Agency sleuths have quizzed three inmates of Puzhal Central Jail here, who are accused in five murder cases related to leaders of a Hindu outfit and the BJP in connection with their probe in the ISIS Kerala-Tamil Nadu module case. The accused men, 'Police' Fakrudeen, Panna Ismail and Bilal Malik, who were arrested in 2013 and are now lodged in high security blocks in the central jail here, were questioned on Monday, a senior prison official told PTI. They were questioned in connection with the ISIS module case (NIA) for about three hours by a team of sleuths led by a Deputy Police Superintendent, he added. This comes after searches at seven locations in Coimbatore on June 12 and the arrest of accused persons, including Mohammed Azarudeen and Shiek Hidayathullah in the ISIS module case. A woman has claimed that a man masturbated at her inside a metro station complex here, prompting the police to register a case against an unidentified person. The alleged incident took place around 9.30 pm on June 14 when the woman was walking out of a clothing store inside the Huda City Centre Metro Station complex, she said in a tweet. "I was climbing down escalators just outside the store when I felt something was wrong at my back. When I turned, a guy was shagging just behind me and i realised that he masturbated on me," she claimed from an unverified Twitter handle. She said that she slapped the man and shouted for help but nobody came forward as the man fled from there. A tempo driver, who was thrashed by policemen allegedly after he attacked one of them with a sword in northwest Delhi, was booked in April for assaulting the 'sevadar' of the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara, police said. The driver, Sarabjeet Singh, had brushes with law earlier as well. He had been booked under preventive sections (107/151 CrPC ) in the years 2006, 2011 and 2013 by the Delhi Police. A Kenyan woman was found stabbed to death at her Chhatarpur Extension house in South Delhi, police said on Tuesday. The police received a call around 8.10 pm on Tuesday about stabbing of a woman near Nanda Hospital in Chhatarpur Extension. The body of the woman, identified as Kenyan national Annsam, was found at an apartment, with stab wound on the chest, said Vijay Kumar, DCP(South). "A few suspected females of Kenya living in the same building are being questioned. Efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the culprits," Kumar said. The victim had shifted recently to Delhi and was staying alone, police said. A case has been registered and police teams are going through footage of CCTV cameras in the vicinity of the spot to identify the culprit.
A case has been registered against former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh's son Abhishek Singh, a former MP, and 19 others on the charge of cheating in connection with an alleged chit fund scam in Surguja district of the state, police said Tuesday. Former BJP MP Madhusudan Yadav and Congress leader Naresh Dakaliya have also been booked in the case. Abhishek, Yadav and Dakaliya had allegedly acted as star campaigners for the company, which functioned in various districts of the state before shutting its operations during the year 2016. Five interstate robbers were held after a gunfight in the Raj Nagar Extension area, police said Tuesday. During a routine checking around Monday midnight, a team of the Sihani Gate police signalled a car to stop. Just after halting the car, one of its five occupants allegedly fired at the police party. During the retaliatory firing, one of them sustained a bullet injury in his right leg, police said. A man who was absconding in a rape case was arrested on Tuesday in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Ghulam Abaas, a resident of Biala village, had been evading arrest for the last seven months and was held by a special team from Mandi area of the district, a police official said. He said an FIR under various sections of the Ranbir Penal Code including that pertaining to rape and wrongful confinement was registered against him at Mandi Police Station last year.
A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to community service for dousing pro-Brexit politician Nigel Farage with a milkshake. Paul Crowther pleaded guilty Tuesday to common assault and criminal damage. He said he regretted throwing the banana-and-salted caramel shake at the Brexit Party leader. Farage was campaigning for European Parliament elections in the northeast England city of Newcastle when the milkshake hit him and dripped down his suit. District Judge Bernard Begley called Crowther's May 20 stunt an "act of crass stupidity motivated by your political views." He ordered Crowther to do 150 hours of volunteer work and pay Farage 350 pounds ($438) in damages. Milkshakes have become an unlikely political weapon in Britain. A couple was Tuesday arrested by the excise enforcement on charges of drug peddling and nine grams of cocaine seized from them, officials said. Theenforcement team caught Shaik Fahad and his wife while they were trying to allegedly sell cocaine in Banjara Hills, they said. In addition to the cocaine, Rs 3 lakh and a car which was used in the transportation of the narcotic drug were seized from their possession, they said. On June 2, the enforcement team had seized seven grams of cocaine, two grams of opium besides Rs 1.13 lakh and arrested two people. The main supplier of cocaine, Shaik Fahad, had managed to flee in his car and he along with his wife were nabbed Tuesday, Assistant Excise Superintendent N Anjireddy said. Fahad had started selling drugs by purchasing it from a Nigerian national at Rs 6,000 per gram and selling it at Rs 7,500 per gram, he said. He was taking orders for different drugs including cocaine, opium and MDMA over mobile phones through voice calls .
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought a report over the death of a woman constable who was burnt alive allegedly by another policeman in Kerala last week. Expressing "deep concern and shock" over the incident, the NCW has taken up the matter with the Kerala police and sought a detailed report from them. The woman, Soumya Pushpakaran, 34, was allegedly hacked and set ablaze in broad daylight by another policeman in Mavelikara area of Alappuzha district on Saturday. The accused, Ajas, has been taken into custody and was undergoing treatment at a hospital as he had suffered 40-per cent burns. The woman's mother had claimed that Ajas had been insisting her daughter to marry him, though she was already married and had three children. Police, however, had said the motive behind the killing could be ascertained only after detailed interrogation of the accused and others.
Nine members of "Devipujak" gang, including a woman, allegedly involved in at least seven cases of loot-cum-murder and a string of robberies in Gujarat have been arrested from Lathidad village in Botad district, police said Tuesday. According to police, the gang members, who all related to each other, were involved in crimes like loot-cum-murders, theft and robberies in the districts in Saurashtra region and Ahmedabad. Amreli Deputy Superintendent of Police M S Rana said the Special Operations Group (SOG) stumbled upon the crime profile of the gang members while interrogating them in connection with a robbery case in the district. A suspected drug peddler was arrested after six grams of heroin was recovered from his possession in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district on Tuesday, police said. Yaqoob Hussain was arrested after a brief chase when he tried to escape after being asked to stop for frisking at a bus stand in Bari Brahmana area, an official said. Hussain was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and is being questioned, the official added.

A 50-year-old Indian national has been arrested from an international airport in western Nepal for carrying arms, police said Tuesday. Umesh Shukla, was arrested from the Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairahawa along with a foreign made pistol and 16 rounds of bullets as well as two magazines, the police said. Shukla was arrested during an X-ray security check while he was about to board a domestic airline's flight to Pokhara. The police has initiated further investigation into the matter and has taken him into custody.
A rice mill owner and his wife were found dead with their throats slit at their residence in Maharajganj's Barwa Faheem locality Tuesday, police said. Police found Jyoti Rice Mill owner Vishwanath Sharma and her wife Lalti lying in a pool of blood. When Vishwanath didn't reach his mill, his accountant Ram Milan came to his residence and knocked the door repeatedly. As there was no response from inside, he alerted neighbours, including the deceased's brother, who called police. Police are yet to find the reason behind the killings. The couple's mentally ill son Sateesh is missing and police are suspecting his role in the case.
