3 siblings arrested in Delhi while selling stolen gold ornaments

Three siblings were arrested on Wednesday while trying to sell stolen gold articles worth Rs 35 lakh in south Delhi's Madangir area, the police said. Sisters Geeta (35) and Vishnu (25) and their brother Bikas (20) were arrested following a tip off. The sister have previous criminal record, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Vijay Kumar said. During interrogation, the accused revealed that they stole a bag containing gold ornaments from Sarai Rohila railway station on Sunday morning. The gold articles were fitted with diamond and precious stones which they took out so that the jewellery could be easily sold, the officer said. Jewellery items worth approximately Rs 35 lakh were recovered from the, police said.

Rs 1.10 lakh stolen from Marathi author Anant Bhave's house

Cash worth over Rs 1 lakh was stolen from the house of Marathi author Anant Bhave when he along with his wife was admitted to a hospital for treatment, a senior police official said Wednesday. According to the police, the incident took place last week at the couple's flat in Matunga, central Mumbai. The couple was away for treatment at a hospital when thieves broke into their house and made way with cash worth Rs 1.10 kept in a bag, they said. The Matunga police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of the IPC against unidentified persons, the official said. Investigation into the matter was underway and no arrest has been made till now, senior inspector of Matunga police station Bharat Bhoite said.

Daimler faces mega fine in diesel probe

Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler could be set for a massive fine in Germany over diesel trickery, as prosecutors confirmed Wednesday they had opened a probe similar to one that cost Volkswagen one billion euros (USD 1.1 billion). "We opened a fine procedure yesterday" against the high-end car giant, a spokesman for prosecutors in car industry bastion Stuttgart told AFP. Like VW, Daimler is suspected of building "defeat device" functions into its motor control software that allowed cars to reduce harmful emissions when undergoing regulatory tests. Prosecutors have already fined Volkswagen one billion euros and VW subsidiary Audi 800 million euros in such cases. Officials said managers failed in their duty to supervise the firms' activities. In a statement, Daimler confirmed the probe and said it would "continue to cooperate fully" with prosecutors. Woman commits suicide in UP; husband, mother-in-law arrested

A woman allegedly hanged herself to death at her in-laws' house here, following which her husband and mother-in-law were arrested on the charge of abetting her suicide, police said Wednesday. The woman, who got married last year, had allegedly committed suicide on Saturday night and police were informed about the incident by her husband the next morning, SP (City) Shlok Kumar said. A note, purportedly written by the woman, was recovered from the site in which the husband Tarjan Sahu and his mother Rukmani were accused of harassing her forcing her to take the extreme step, the police officer said. Sahu and his mother have been arrested and a case has been lodged against them under relevant sections of the IPC, he said.

Odisha Police to probe into seizure of Rs 11 crore from UP car

Odisha DGP R P Sharma said Wednesday the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch will probe into the seizure of Rs 10.90 crore cash from a car in Mahasamund district of Chhattishgarh. Sharma said that the Odisha Police will intervene in the case as the cash was reportedly being transported from Cuttack to Agra in Uttar Pradesh. "We have been informed by Chhattisgarh police that the car carrying four persons had left from Cuttack. We are trying to ascertain the identity of the persons who gave them the money and the purpose behind it," the DGP said. Four persons of Uttar Pradesh were on Tuesday detained by Chhattishgarh police for questioning after Rs 10.90 crore was seized from their car in Mahasamund, Chhattisgarh. CBI files closure report in IAS Anurag Tiwari death case, rejects foul play

The CBI Wednesday filed its closure report in the death case of IAS officer Anurag Tiwari, concluding that he had an accidental fall which led to his 'asphyxial' death. The CBI, on the basis of the medical report of AIIMS, ruled out that the death was homicidal or suicidal. In its report, CBI stated that all the allegations levelled by the family members of the officer were investigated and it was found that they were baseless and unsubstantiated. Taking note of the closure report, the CBI court of special judge Subrat Pathak issued notice to Tiwari's brother Mayank, asking him to place his stand on the report on March 7. "Investigation was conducted considering all possible angles on each and every aspect of the case, but no evidence could emerge suggesting foul play behind death of deceased Anurag Tiwari," the CBI told the court. West Delhi cloth merchant faked Rs 34 lakh loot

A case of Rs 34 lakh loot in West Delhi's Kirti Nagar, involving a cloth merchant, has turned out to be fake. The police on Wednesday said the complainant Vinay had himself concocted the loot theory.It was earlier reported that cloth merchant Vinay was robbed of Rs 34 lakh by two bike-borne robbers outside his house when he was preparing to leave for Karol Bagh in his car.The robbers allegedly committed the crime on the excuse of asking an address.Police have lodged an FIR and are investigating the case."Police have recovered the money from the complainant's house. Sunanda Pushkar death case: Tharoor to appear before sessions court tomorrow

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is slated to appear before the sessions court on Thursday in connection with the Sunanda Pushkar death case.A Delhi Court had on February 4 sent the case to a sessions court for further proceedings.The Patiala House Court also dismissed a plea filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to assist the court in investigation and directed the Delhi Police to preserve its vigilance report in the matter.Pushkar was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a suite of a Delhi hotel on the night of January 17, 2014. Pak HC reserves verdict on Sharif's plea for suspension of sentence on medical grounds

A Pakistani high court Wednesday reserved its judgment on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's plea, seeking suspension of his sentence in a corruption case on medical grounds. Sharif, 69, has been serving a seven-year sentence at Kotlakhpat jail in Lahore after being convicted in the Al Azizia case by an accountability court. Sharif through his counsel Khawaja Haris last month filed application seeking bail on health grounds after developing heart-related complications. A two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) comprising Justice Amir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani heard the plea. Haris presented the medical reports of Sharif and said the health of former prime minister was not stable and he should be given bail. SC holds RCom chairman Anil Ambani guilty of contempt, directs payment of Rs 453 crore to Ericsson

Observing there was a 'wilful default', the Supreme Court on Wednesday held Anil Ambani, chairman of Reliance Communication(RCom), guilty of contempt of court and ordered the debt-laden company to clear the Rs 453 crore dues to Swedish telecom equipment maker Ericsson within four weeks or face a 3-month jail term. In a verdict that came as a setback to Ambani, the apex court also pulled up the industrialist for his "cavalier attitude" demonstrated through the affidavit filed in the court, saying any "unconditional apology" given must be rejected. Plea in SC seeks consecutive jail terms for convicts in graft, terror cases

A plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking that various jail terms awarded to a convict under special laws on corruption and terrorism should run consecutively, as in countries like the US, and not concurrently. The plea, filed by lawyer and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay, said that the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) provision, which provides that a convict can serve varying jail terms simultaneously for several offences, be not made applicable to the convicts in heinous cases. India objects to Pak's use of abusive language at ICJ

India on Wednesday strongly objected to the abusive language used by Pakistan's counsel in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), urging the UN court to draw a redline. Pakistani prisoner killed after brawl over TV volume in Jaipur Central Jail, say police

A Pakistani prisoner serving a life term in the Central jail here was allegedly killed by other inmates after a fight over the volme of television, prison officials said on Wednesday."The prisoner, identified as Shakur Ullah, died allegedly in a brawl with other inmates," said Inspector General of Police, Prisons, Rupinder Singh.Additional Commissioner, Jaipur, Laxman Gaur, said: "Around four prisoners, including the Pakistani inmate, were watching TV when a brawl broke out among them over volume. As the fight escalated, the three convicts bashed Ullah's head against a stone."Gaur said the incident happened at around 1 pm on Wednesday.According to police, Shakur Ullah from Sialkot district of Pakistan was arrested in 2011 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Former top Chinese general sentenced to life over corruption charges

Fang Fenghui, former top Chinese general who was facing charges for corruption, has been sentenced to life imprisonment, Chinese state media said on Wednesday.Xinhua reported that Fenghui, former chief of joint staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), was convicted of obtaining and giving bribes and receiving huge amounts of money of unknown origin.According to South China Morning Post, all assets owned by Fang were confiscated. Congress MLA J N Ganesh was arrested Wednesday near a restaurant at Somnath in Gujarat, weeks after he was declared absconding for allegedly assaulting another lawmaker from his party during a brawl at aresort. Pak seeks response from India on inmate killed in brawl in Jaipur prison

Pakistan on Wednesday expressed concern and sought response from India on reports of the killing of a Pakistani prisoner by Indian inmates in a jail in Rajasthan's capital Jaipur. A 50-year-old Pakistani national, identified as Shakrullah and lodged in the Jaipur Central Jail, was allegedly killed Wednesday in a brawl with other prisoners. "A Pakistani prisoner was allegedly murdered today in the central jail.
