Rajeev Kumar arrives for 3rd day of questioning in Saradha chit fund scam

Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar on Monday arrived at the CBI office here for questioning in connection with Saradha chit fund scam.This is the third day of his questioning by the central investigative agency.Earlier in the day, former Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh arrived at the CBI office in the state capital for the second day of interrogation in connection with the case.The CBI grilled Kumar and Ghosh for nearly twelve hours on Sunday in connection with the Rose Valley and Saradha chit fund scams.Ghosh was arrested on November 23, 2013, and sent to custody by the CBI on September 4, 2014, after it took over the investigation on the orders of the Supreme Court. In 2016, the Calcutta High Court had granted interim bail to Ghosh against a bail bond of Rs 2 lakh.The Kolkata Police chief, who has been accused of withholding some documents related to Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund cases, was questioned by the CBI in Shillong on Saturday as well.On February 5, the Supreme .

Frenchman arrested for flying drone over Myanmar parliament

A French tourist has been arrested for flying a drone near Myanmar's parliament in the capital Naypyidaw, the French embassy and local police confirmed Monday, under a law that could see him imprisoned for up to three years. The man, named by police as 27-year-old Arthur Desclaux, tried to fly a drone over the government building, which is illegal in Myanmar. Three journalists and their driver were jailed in 2017 for the same offence. Local media published photos of the French detainee, including his passport details, and his drone. "(He) was arrested late afternoon on Thursday 7 February for having flown a drone over the parliament," the embassy said, adding that the man was still in detention in Naypyidaw. HC notice to Moin Qureshi on CBI's plea to enhance security amount to travel to UAE, Pak

The Delhi High Court Monday issued notice to controversial meat exporter Moin Akhtar Qureshi on a CBI plea to enhance the security amount he has to pay to travel abroad. Justice Chander Shekhar sought the response of Qureshi on the agency's plea seeking enhancing of security from Rs two crore to Rs six crore which Qureshi, accused in a cheating and corruption case, has been asked to furnish to travel to the UAE and Pakistan. Recently, Qureshi was allowed by a trial court to travel to the UAE from February 15-23 for attending the Gulf Food Festival and to Pakistan from March 6-20 to attend his niece's wedding. The court had also directed him to furnish an additional security of Rs two crore in the form of bank guarantee and warned that in case of violation of any of the conditions imposed, the amount would be forfeited. Corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar files bail plea in Delhi court

Corporate lobbyist Deepak Talwar filed a bail application before a CBI judge at a Delhi Court on Monday.In a previous hearing, the Patiala House Court had extended Talwar's remand till February 12.On February 7, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had told the court that Talwar had links with fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya during the hearing of the AgustaWestland case.Talwar was extradited by Dubai authorities on January 30, along with Dubai-based businessman Rajeev Saxena.ED has alleged that Talwar was involved in cases involving corporate lobbying. Last week, he was extradited to India in cases involving alleged routing and misuse of Rs 90 crore. He is the main accused who allegedly facilitated dispersal of profit making routes of Air India to private airlines using his contacts.On January 31, the Patiala House Court granted a seven-day custodial remand of Talwar to the ED after he was produced before the Special Judge S.S. 2003 Mumbai blast: Death row convict Hanif Syed dies at hospital

Mohammad Hanif Syed, one of the three convicts sentenced to death in the 2003 Mumbai twin bomb blasts, died at a hospital here on Sunday.Syed's health suddenly deteriorated on Saturday evening, following which he was shifted to a hospital. He was lodged in Nagpur Central Jail.Syed, his wife Fehmida and third conspirator Ashrat Ansari were put behind bars for planting bombs on August 25, 2003, near Vile Parle railway station. The incident claimed the lives of 54 people while 244 others sustained injuries.A special Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) court awarded the death sentence to all three accused for planting bombs at Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazaar.This was the first time that a married couple is being convicted by a POTA court for carrying out bomb blasts.

Malaysian ex-PM Najib combative ahead of 1MDB graft trial

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is hardly lying low ahead of his corruption trial on charges related to the multibillion-dollar looting of the 1MDB state investment fund. He's crooned about slander in an R&B video and vilified the current government in daily social media posts to counter portrayals of him as corrupt and out of touch. The trial set to begin Tuesday comes nine months after Najib's spectacular election defeat, which was spurred by voters' furor over the 1MDB scandal that is being investigated in the US and other countries. He is charged with 42 counts of criminal breach of trust, graft, abuse of power and money laundering in one of Malaysia's biggest criminal trials. Najib has denied wrongdoing. His lawyers are appealing Monday to delay his trial.

2 years after demonetisation, Gujarat police seizes Rs 3.5 crore in old currency

Police on Sunday seized Rs 3.5 crore in demonetised currency from a village in Bilimora. Four people have been arrested in this regard.This comes over two years after Demonetisation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government with an aim to curb the menace of corruption on November 8, 2016 had banned Rs 1000 and Rs 500 notes. Shaileshgiri Goswamy, Investigating officer of the local crime branch said, "We have arrested four people. An accent car and Rs 3.5 crore in demonetised currency has been seized from them."The police informed that the seizure includes 13432 notes of old 1000 thousand rupees and 43300 notes of old 500 hundred rupees.Further investigation is underway.

Saudis don't know where Khashoggi's body is: foreign minister

Saudi authorities do not know where dissident Jamal Khashoggi's body is despite having in custody the Saudi team that murdered him, the kingdom's foreign minister has said. The dissident journalist was dismembered after his murder October 2 in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul but his remains have yet to be found. In an interview broadcast Sunday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said the murder was carried out by Saudi officials "acting outside their scope of authority" and that 11 people have been charged with the crime. But asked where Khashoggi's body is, he told CBS's "Face the Nation," "We don't know." Berlin police investigate reported assault of Syrian girls

Berlin police are investigating the reported assaults of two Syrian teenagers in the German capital. Germany's dpa news agency reported Sunday that an unidentified man punched the Syrian girls, ages 15 and 16, multiple times in the face after yelling anti-foreigner slurs at them on Friday night. Dpa says both girls were treated at a hospital. Police say a 12-year-old girl wearing a headscarf also was assaulted on Friday. She reported that an unidentified woman tried to pull the scarf off her head and grabbed her by the hair while making anti-foreigner comments. The woman fled before police arrived and the victim suffered minor injuries. Germany took in more than 1 million asylum-seekers during 2015-2016.

Hanif Syed, sentenced to death in 2003 Mumbai blasts, dies at hospital

Mohammad Hanif Syed, one of the three convicts sentenced to death in the 2003 Mumbai twin bomb blasts and currently lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail, died at a hospital, a prison officer said Sunday. Syed's health suddenly deteriorated Saturday evening, following which he was shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) where he died one and half hours after admission, Jail Superintendent Rani Bhosle told PTI Sunday night. "The exact cause of his death will be known after post-mortem which will be conducted Monday in the presence of his relatives who have arrived in the city Sunday," she said, adding that Syed's body will be handed over to his relatives after autopsy. 5 police personnel suspended for dereliction of duty

Five police personnel, including an inspector of a police station here, have been suspended for dereliction of duty following an ATM burglary four days back, an official said. On the night of February 5, around Rs 38 lakh was robbed from an ATM on the outskirts of Chhata town even though a police response vehicle (PRV) was standing just 200 metres from the spot of the incident, SSP Satyarth Aniruddha Pankaj said. Court's role is limited in Ayodhya dispute: Swamy

Courts have a "limited" role to play in the resolution of the Ayodhya dispute, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said here Sunday. Speaking at a public function here, the Rajya Sabha MP also claimed that Pakistan will disintegrate in the next decade. Talking about the Babri Masjid-Ram temple issue, which is currently before the Supreme Court, Swamy said, "Court's role is limited in this case. "The non-disputed land can be taken into possession and the temple can be constructed within two years," he said. Last month, the Narendra Modi government asked the Supreme Court to allow it to return the "non-disputed" surplus land acquired around the disputed structure in Ayodhya to a Hindu trust and other original owners. Swamy also predicted that Pakistan will split up and cease to exist as a country. "Between 2020 and 2030, Pakistan will disintegrate into four provinces, and Pakistan as a country will cease to exist," he said.

Man sets wife, infant on fire after quarrel in Telangana, held

A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his wife and later setting her and their four-month-old baby boy on fire near here following an argument, police said Sunday. The matter came to light this morning after some villagers of Kondapur found two charred bodies in a plot layout and alerted the police, they said. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the accused had married the woman in 2015 and the couple had a baby boy. The woman has been living with her parents for the past few months after differences cropped up between them, a police release said. Meanwhile, the woman had Saturday evening met her husband and both had gone to Ghatkesar, where they had a tiff, following which she consumed sleeping pills and also fed the powder of a pill to the infant, police said. Later, the accused took them to a vacant plot and throttled both before putting their bodies on a heap of sticks and setting them ablaze.

Sex determination racket busted in Telangana, doctor held

A sex determination racket has been busted near here and a doctor arrested in this connection, police said Sunday. A team comprising health and police officials carried out a decoy operation at a private scanning centre in Ibrahimpatnam on January 8 and arrested a doctor for allegedly conducting prenatal sex determination examination with the help of a mediator, they said. Based on credible information that prenatal sex determination tests were conducted illegally on pregnant ladies at the scanning centre,a 6-month pregnant woman was taken for sex determination test, as a decoy, to the centre, they added. The doctor took Rs 7,000 for sex determination and disclosed the gender of the unborn baby, police said adding he was apprehended.

Sundergarh girl case: BJP women's wing demands CM to clarify

Girl dies of food poisoning in Jharkhand

A 12-year-old girl died and five others of her family in Gumla district fell sick after taking food, a government official said Sunday. Gumla district Deputy Commissioner Sashi Ranjan said the family took dinner Saturday night and started vomiting and complained of stomach ache. The villagers took them to the Sadar hospital in an ambulance around midnight where the 12-year-old girl died, he said. The sick persons which included two men, two women and one minor girl - were referred to the RIIMS in Ranchi for better treatment, he said. The police were investigating into the incident, he said.
