Delhi: Couple wanted for duping investors arrested

A couple has been arrested for allegedly cheating several people to the tune of Rs 30 crore and jumping bail, police said on Sunday. The accused persons, Vinod Bansal (57) and Preeti Bansal (56), were also wanted in three cases by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police, they said. The couple was arrested from Ghaziabad following a tip off, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Vijay Kumar said. During interrogation, they told police that they used to lure people to invest money in their fake projects. They had also taken loans from several banks and financial institutions, he said. Vinod revealed that he was a property dealer and he was arrested in 2006 in a group housing scam by the CBI, Kumar said. Later, he opened a school in Ludhiana. Joint director of Health suspended for seeking bribe

: A health official, who was due for retirement from service in just two weeks, has been suspended for allegedly demanding a bribe for doing an official favour, sources said here Sunday. The joint director of Health in the district Elangovan was placed under suspension for seeking money from a private hospital owner for certification of a scanning equipment purchased from Chennai, the sources said. Also, the official sought money from a contractor who was buildingan annexe of the district headquarters hospital in Tenkasi, they said. The joint director was to retire on February 28. On a complaint from the private hospital owner and the contractor, Elangovan has been suspended pending equiry, they said.

One killed as police intercept suspected robbers in Solapur

An unidentified man was killed when the police fired in retaliation on a suspected gang of robbers travelling in a car in Maharashtra's Solapur district in the wee hours of Sunday, a local official said. Three policemen were injured as the car's passengers, including the deceased man, attacked them, he said. Solapur tehsil police station in-charge Vijay Patil and three other policemen stopped on suspicion a car with five or six men inside around 3.30 am near Ulegaon, 400 km from here, the official said. The police found weapons such as swords and choppers inside the vehicle. When they questioned the car's passengers, the latter stepped out and attacked the policemen with swords and pelted stones at them, the official said. The policemen first fired in air and then fired at the assailants, injuring one of them, he said. He later died in a hospital. Minor girl's body found dumped in Delhi park

The body of a seven-year-old girl was found dumped near a park in outer Delhi's Nihal Vihar on Sunday, police said. A passerby spotted the body and informed the Nihal Vihar police station at around 7.30 am, following which officials rushed to the spot, they said. Investigations revealed that the minor had been missing from her house since 9.30 pm on Saturday after which the parents tried to search for her in the vicinity. Unable to trace her, they approached the police at midnight and lodged a missing complaint, Seju Kuruvilla, Deputy Commissioner of police (outer) said. Police found the body on Sunday morning and after identification, it was sent for post-mortem, he said. A case has been registered and an investigation was taken up, he added. External injuries were found on the body, police said, adding they are probing all angles, including whether the minor was sexually assaulted. Further investigation is underway, police said.

Law student dies during inter-university football

In a tragic incident, a 23-year-old law student, who was here to compete in the inter-university football tournament, died Sunday after suffering cardiac arrest, family sources said. Rittik Das, who was pursuing law at the National Law University Odisha in Cuttack, collapsed on the field at the Sports Authority of India Eastern Centre and was rushed to the nearby hospital in the afternoon. "He was declared dead on arrival. Following post-morterm his body was taken to his hometown in Bhubaneswar on Sunday. He was asthmatic and that may have complicated it," the family source said. Illegal call centre probe: FBI official meets Guj cops

The FBI attache in the United States Embassy in India met Ahmedabad police officials to assist the latter in an ongoing probe into illegal call centres busted here recently, a senior official said Sunday. Ahmedabad police had sought help from the FBI attache in the ongoing investigation in illegal call centres involving US citizens and territory, city police commissioner A K Singh said. The FBI attache visited Ahmedabad Saturday and gathered information and data related to the case, Singh added. "We are investigating a couple of cases here where we raided such call centres and arrested people. We have data and information about US citizens, bank accounts and US territory connected to the crime," Singh said. Lawyer: Pakistani journalist arrested by feds out on bail

A defence lawyer says a Pakistani journalist arrested by federal authorities for allegedly criticising state agencies on social media has been released on bail. Attorney Ejaz Basra says the court in the eastern city of Lahore on Sunday denied a federal prosecutor's request that Rizwan-ur-Rehman Razi be held without bail. Instead, the court released Razi on a bond of about USD 730. Federal Investigation Agency officials arrested Razi at his Lahore residence on Saturday. He was booked for tweeting against state agencies. Journalists and press freedom advocates say the military and its agencies are pressuring media outlets to quash critical coverage. 26.5 kg of looted gold recovered, three held in Bihar

The Police on Sunday recovered 26.5 kg of stolen gold and arrested three persons from different places of Bihar in connection with the loot of gold from a private finance company in Muzaffarpur. Four-year-old boy killed during house demolition in Shimla

A four-year-old boy died after a portion of a pillar accidentally hit his head during demolition of a house in Dhalli area here Sunday, police said. The deceased was identified as Krishan, Shimla Deputy Superintendent of Police Pramod Shukla said. Hailing from Nepal, Krishan's father Budhi Singh and his wife work as labourers here. They had been hired through a contractor by one Priyavrat in Dhalli to demolish a portion of his house as that land was to be acquired for construction of a four-lane road, the DSP said. A part of the pillar accidentally hit Krishan's head during the demolition, the DSP said, adding that the boy was immediately taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A case has been registered at Dhalli police station against the contractor and another labourer who was removing the pillar.

Two construction workers killed in Assam

Two construction workers were killed allegedly by their colleague after an argument at Rupai in Tinsukia district, police said Sunday. According to Tinsukia Additional Superintendent of Police, Saurav Jyoti Saikia, the deceased were killed on Saturday evening by one of their colleagues with a machete after they fell apart over some issue. "They first had an argument during the afternoon. Later again in evening after work, the trio started arguing. At one point, one of them picked up a machete and attacked the other two, killing them on the spot," the ASP added. The attacker later surrendered in front of the police with the weapon of the crime, Saikia informed. Madras HC urged to set up mobile magistrate court to strengthen enforcement of helmet rule: Bedi

The law secretary of the Puducherry government has requested the Madras High Court to deploy a mobile magistrate Traffic court here to ensure motorcyclists wear helmets, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi has said. BJP stages protest against 'rising crime' in MP under Congress

The opposition BJP staged a demonstration here Sunday alleging that the law and order situation has deteriorated in Madhya Pradesh after the Congress came to power. BJP workers submitted a memorandum to the Governor after staging the protest at Roshanpura square. "The law and order situation has been deteriorating since the Congress government took over," Bhopal district BJP president and former MLA Surendra Nath Singh said. 2 arrested in Uttarakhand-UP hooch tragedy

Two people were arrested Sunday in connection with the hooch tragedy that claimed over 70 lives in two adjoining districts in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh last week, police said. Four foreign nationals held with cocaine worth Rs 39 crore

The police have arrested three Nigerian men alongwith a Brazilian woman and seized cocaine worth around Rs 39 crore from their possession,a senior official said here Sunday. The accused were about to send the drug to South Africa, police said. A team of Amboli police nabbed the accused from the Maurya Estate road in suburban Andheri Saturday night and recovered drugs worth Rs 38.95 crore, the official said. The accused were identified as Neras Pokhogo (35), Michael Hop (29), Simon Agobata (32), all Nigerians; and Karle Ires (41), a woman from Brazil. The cocaine allegedly seized from their possession was supposed to be sent to Johannesburg in South Africa. The accused were held when they were heading for the office of a courier companyto dispatch the consignment. Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Kumar Sharma said the accused concealed narcotic drugs in rings and pipes of curtains. These drug-loaded consignments of curtains would be then sent abroad through courier .

Elderly couple held for smuggling forex at Delhi airport

An elderly couple was arrested by the customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle out of the country foreign currencies worth Rs 92 lakh at Delhi airport, according to an official statement issued on Sunday. The accused were intercepted when they were proceeding to board a flight to Dubai on Friday. A detailed personal and baggage search of the two passengers resulted in the recovery of foreign currencies Euro and Dirham equivalent to Rs 92.02 lakh, it said. The two, aged around 70 years, were accompanied with their nine-year-old grandchild, the Customs Department said in the statement. The forex was seized and the couple arrested, it said.
