Court sends terror funding case accused to 5-day NIA custody

A Delhi court on Thursday sent Mohammad Arif Ghulambashir, Dharampuria, arrested by the NIA, to five days custody of the agency in connection with Falah-i-Insaniyat Foundation (FIF) terror funding case.Dharampuria, who is a resident of Gujarat's Valsad, was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here on his arrival from Dubai. TThe agency had issued a Lookout Circular (LOC) for him.After hearing the prosecution and defence arguments, Additional Sessions Judge Anil Antil remanded the accused in five-day custody of the NIA.The agency told the Patiala House Court judge that Dharampuria was evading his examination and arrest by going into hiding in Dubai.Lawyer MS Khan, who appeared for the accused, claimed that the NIA is giving wrong facts.Khan said that it was the accused who approached the agency to join the probe and gave his flight details since he did not have any involvement in the matter.Dharampuria is accused ..

Surya Nagar councilor writes to GDA against "illegal constructions"

Councilor of Surya Nagar S K Maheshwari has written to the vice-chairperson of Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) against illegal constructions in the area with the alleged connivance of government staff. Talking to the media persons here on Thursday, Maheshwari said his complaint to the GDA's area vice-chairperson, Kanchan Verma, included some documentary evidences as well. Maheshwari, a BJP leader, said illegal constructions are going on in full swing which are against building laws. He said Chief Justice S K Sen and Justice R K Agarwal in 2005 and 2006 had said all commercial activities in residential colonies was illegal. The councilor said stilt floors can only be used for parking not for shops and offices. Maheshwari, in his complaint, said GDA officials are flouting directions in contempt of the high court. Ex-CJI duping case: Saket court sends accused to 14 days judicial custody

The man arrested on a charge of duping former Chief Justice of India (CJI) was sent to 14 days judicial custody by a Saket court here on Thursday.Metropolitan Magistrate Vinik Jain sent accused Dinesh Mali to judicial custody after he was produced at the end of his police remand.Advocate Mahima Misra appeared for the accused while advocate Pratap Venugopal represented complainant Justice R M Lodha.During the course of hearing, the accused, while handing over a demand draft of Rs 1 lakh, sought compounding of the offence. Police tell court no proof to prosecute Patekar; Tanushree cries foul, to challenge closure report

In a relief to actor Nana Patekar, Mumbai Police has informed a local court that it has no evidence to prosecute him in a molestation case lodged against him by actor Tanushree Dutta. Dutta, whose complaint against Patekar in October last year sparked a nationwide '#MeToo' movement on social media, expressed disappointment over the "clean chit" to him and called the police and the legal system "corrupt". The suburban Oshiwara police on Wednesday filed a 'B Summary' report before a metropolitan magistrate in Andheri, Deputy Commissioner of Police Paramjit Singh Dahiya told PTI. A 'B-Summary' report is filed when police do not find any evidence against the accused to file a charge sheet and seek trial. The magistrate court is yet to pass an order on the closure report. NRC officials arrested for accepting bribe to enter name in

Two NRC officials were arrested here Thursday for allegedly accepting bribe from a woman to enter her name in the citizenship list, police said. Field Level Officer of Dispur, National Register of Citizens Sewa Kendra, Syed Shahjahan was caught red handed by a team of Anti-Corruption Bureau while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a woman, identified as Kajari Ghosh Dutta, the police said. Dutta, a resident of Ananda Nagar area of the city, had filed another FIR against the Assistant Local Registrar of Citizen Registration (LRCR) Rahul Parashar of the same NRC Sewa Kendra who was also arrested for his alleged complicity with the other official, they said. Both the accused had highlighted some technical defects in Dutta's application and demanded bribe from her to correct it and to enter her name thereafter in the final NRC list. Issue of paternity cannot be decided in habeas corpus plea: HC

The Delhi High Court has held that the issue of paternity cannot be determined in a habeas corpus writ petition after a couple moved the plea seeking custody of a boy in a shelter home, claiming that he was their lost son. The court dismissed the couple's plea, while granting them liberty to file appropriate legal proceedings to seek declaration as parents and custody of the minor. The court was dealing with a habeas corpus petition filed by the couple, claiming that a boy in the custody of Bal Sahyog, a child care NGO, was their lost son. They claimed that the boy showed a stark resemblance to their lost son and that his age was about the same as it would have been of their lost son. NIA team seizes huge cache of arms and ammunition in Manipur

A team of National Investigation Agency and Assam Rifles seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition from Lamlai area of Manipur's Imphal East district on Thursday, officials said. In connection with a case lodged in 2017 against Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) People's War Group the NIA team conducted a search operation and seized one AK-56 along with three magazines and 180 live rounds, one 0.38 pistol along with four live rounds, a NIA release said. The team also seized one 0.32 pistol, two live hand grenade, 10 rounds of 9 mm pistol and five pairs of camouflage uniforms, it said. It is believed that the recovered arms and ammunition belong to the associates of self-styled chairman of KCP (PWG) Moirangthem Rana Meitei. A case was re-registered under the unlawful activities (Prevention) Act. The case relates to the criminal conspiracy hatched by cadres of proscribed KCP (PWG)to extort money from local people, government departments, schools and other institutions. NIA

PMK urges TN Guv to order release of Rajiv case convicts

: The PMK, an ally of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, Thursday urged Governor Banwarilal Purohit to order the release of seven Rajiv Gandhi assasination case convicts without any further delay. Pointing out that the Tamil Nadu government had recommended their release on September 9 last year, PMK founder leader S Ramadoss, in a letter to the Governor, said "it is sad that no decision has been taken yet on the recommendation till today, even after 276 days." There were no legal restrictions to release the convicts and the Governor has "independent powers" on the matter, the PMK leader noted. Also, Supreme Court judgments in this respect showed that the Governor "has complete authority" under the Constitution to release convicts, he said. Telangana: Girl dies after falling from school building

A 14-year-old girl, studying in Class 10, died on Thursday after allegedly falling from her school building here.The LB Nagar Police, however, said the parents of the deceased have not filed any complaint.They said a case will be registered and a probe initiated if a complaint is made.According to child rights activists, the girl fell down from her school building. She was immediately shifted to a hospital where she succumbed to injuries, they said.

U'khand HC pulls up bar association for restricting members from representing accused in court

The Uttarakhand High Court Thursday came down heavily on the Kotdwar Bar Association for prohibiting its members from representing the accused in court in a case pertaining to the murder of a lawyer. While hearing a PIL challenging the legality of such a resolution, Chief Justice of the high court Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Alok Kumar Verma expressed extreme displeasure over the matter saying if such a resolution has been passed it is completely unacceptable. Such a resolution will amount to predetermination of guilt of the accused by the advocates which cannot be permitted under law. Lawyers have high duty towards litigants, they said. "Even if someone shoots me then also you cannot refuse to represent the accused in court. Even Kasab was not denied representation in court," the chief justice said. Three brothers get life term in murder case

A special CBI court here Thursday sentenced three brothers to life in prison for killing a 17-year-old girl five years ago. Special Judge Vinayak Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 1.30 lakh each on the convicts-- Rohtash, Sunil and Lalit -- after holding them guilty under Sections 302 (punishment for murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They were directed to pay Rs 1.50 lakh and Rs 50,000 to the girl's parents Suresh Pal and Anita, respectively. Public prosecutor Darshan Singh said due to a land dispute, the assailants barged into the girl's house in Muthber village under the Bhorakala police station and attacked her parents in March 2014. As the assailants fired upon her parents, the girl came in between and sustained gunshot injuries. Later, she succumbed to her injuries, said Singh. The CBI has booked former MP Ateeq Ahmad and others for allegedly orchestrating the abduction of a Lucknow-based businessman from Deoria Jail to extort money from him and take over his business, officials said on Thursday. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against Ahmad, former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Uttar Pradesh, on the charges of criminal conspiracy, extortion, cheating, forgery, robbery and criminal intimidation, they added. The agency has not added the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to abduction in its FIR. According to the procedure, the CBI takes over the probe on an FIR registered by the state police without adding or deleting any charges.
