Two persons have been arrested for possession of drugs in separate incidents in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, police said Thursday. The Special Investigative Unit (SIU), Nahan, caught Ram Singh (50), of Kalog village, at Naya Khala between Shillai and Paonta Sahib with 1.114 kg of charas, said Sirmaur, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Virendra Thakur. In a similar case, one Abhishek of Dholakuan village in Paonta Sahib tehsil was arrested based on a tip-off and 17.69 grams of heroin was recovered from his possession, the ASP added. Separate cases under relevant sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have been registered at concerned police stations, Thakur said, adding that further investigation is underway.
An assistant engineer of Jaipur Discom was caught red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in Alwar for conducting inspection of works done by a contractor. The accused engineer Ramesh Chand Meena, posted in Neemrana office of Jaipur Discom, had demanded the bribe from the contractor Devi Singh for the inspection so that the payment against the work could be released. Singh's firm had got a contract from Rajasthan State Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO) for laying underground cable and the work was completed in July last year. The work was to be supervised by the electricity department but the accused engineer was demanding the bribe for conducting inspection of the work site police said. Special Judge S S Mann extended the ED's custody of Talwar till February 12 after the probe agency said he was to be confronted with his son who is currently abroad and has been summoned by the investigating agency for February 11. ED had sought extension of custody for Talwar by seven days. The court had earlier allowed ED to quiz him in custody for seven days, after the probe agency alleged that he acted as middleman in negotiations to favour foreign private airlines causing the loss to national carrier Air India. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was abuzz with activity on Thursday with two high-profile politically-linked persons, Robert Vadra and Karti Chidambaram, appearing before the agency for questioning in separate money-laundering investigations being conducted against them. First to arrive at the ED's Jamnagar House office in central Delhi was Karti, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, at about 11 am. The office houses some special investigation and vigilance units of the central probe agency. The Supreme Court Thursday came down heavily on CBI for transferring its former Joint Director A K Sharma, who was probing Bihar's shelter home cases, out of the agency in violation of the court's order and directed its then interim chief M Nageswara Rao to personally appear before it on February 12. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi took serious note of violation of two earlier orders of the apex court and issued contempt notice to Rao for transferring Sharma to the CRPF on January 17 without taking prior permission from the court. The bench, which also comprised Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna, directed CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla to give the names of officers who were part of the process in transferring Sharma out of the probe agency. Vadra, who was grilled for five-and-a half hours for the first time in the case on Wednesday, arrived at the ED office in Jamnagar House in central Delhi at about 11.25 am, about an hour after his team of lawyers. A five-year-old girl's mother and aunt were arrested for allegedly burning the minor with a candle for her mischievous behaviour in Thane district of Maharashtra, a police official said on Thursday. The child was playing at her home in Roadpali area of Kalamboli locality in Navi Mumbai town on Wednesday, and not listening to her mother and aunt, he said. The two women apparently got annoyed over this. They caught hold of the girl and allegedly burnt her with the candle, causing several injuries to her, the official said. When the child's father, who works as a vegetable vendor, returned home at night, he found his daughter crying and saw burn injuries on her body, he said. When he asked the child about the injuries, she pointed towards her mother and aunt, the official said. Police in the Maldives have asked the country's prosecutor general to charge a former president with money laundering and his former Cabinet minister with aiding him. A police statement says investigators have found grounds to charge Yameen Abdul Gayoom and his former Legal Affairs Minister Azima Shakoor. The case stems from an allegedly shady deal to lease islands for tourist resort development and the discovery of USD 1 million in Yameen's bank account. Police also say they asked the prosecutor general to charge Yameen and Shakoor with providing false information to investigators. Although 21 corporators of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been disqualified since 2007, almost all of them for submitting fake caste certificates, no case has been registered against any of them so far, answer to an RTI query has revealed. City-based activist Anil Galgali had filed the Right to Information (RTI) query with the civic body, seeking details of the action taken against the disqualified corporators. Officer of BMC's legal department, S D Fulsunge, in his reply given recently, said no case has been filed against any corporator ever since their disqualification. He also said that the legal department forwards the election petitions to the Small Causes Court. The election department said that most of the 21 corporators were disqualified for submitting fake caste certificates, while one of them was disqualified for flouting the two-child norm.
