Thrown out by family for entering Sabarimala, Kanaka Durga returns home with court order

4 stray cows found dead at temporary shelter home in UP, inquiry ordered

Four stray cows lodged at a temporary shelter home in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district died allegedly of cold, prompting authorities to order an inquiry into the deaths. The deaths were reported from a shelter home in Burdata village on Tuesday and an inquiry has been ordered, Sub Divisional Magistrate, Shamli, Pershant Kumar, said. Reportedly the cows died of cold.The actual cause of death will be clear after postmortem, Kumar said. Officials said another cow death was reported from a temporary shelter home in Muzaffarnagar district. Sub Divisional Magistrate, Jansath, Vijay Kumar said the body of the cow has been sent for postmortem and the matter is being investigated. SC commences hearing on pleas seeking review of Sabarimala verdict

The Supreme Court Wednesday commenced hearing on pleas seeking review of its verdict which had allowed women of all ages entry into Kerala's Sabarimala temple. Senior advocate K Prasaran, appearing for Nair Service Society, opened the arguments before a five-judge bench and sought setting aside of the verdict. The review petitions are being heard by a Constitution bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra. There are 64 cases being heard in total, out of which some are review petitions and some transfer petitions. On September 28, a five-judge Constitution bench, headed by the then CJI Dipak Misra, in a 4:1 verdict had paved the way for entry of women of all ages into the shrine, saying the ban amounted to gender discrimination.

Ex-Guatemala boss sentenced to time served, fined $350,000

The former chief of the Guatemalan football federation, who was convicted for extortion and fraud in connection with the FifaGate scandal, was sentenced to time served and fined $350,000. US District Judge Pamela Chen in New York authorized Brayan Jimenez -- who presided over Guatemala's National Football Federation between December 2009 and May 2015 -- to take back his passport and return to his country, court documents showed. A court spokeswoman and his lawyer Justine Harris added he would have to pay a fine of $350,000. He will remain on probation for two years. 2 youths thrashed for attempting to rape schoolgirl in UP

Two youths were beaten up by people for allegedly attempting to rape a girl at a village here, police said Wednesday. The parents of the girl have alleged that four motorcycle-borne youths picked-up their daughter while she was returning from school and tried to rape her at a sugarcane field on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police (SP), City, Ombir Singh, said. The girl was rescued by locales, who caught two of the four youths and beat them up. Police have launched a search to nab the remaining accused persons, he said. Singh said the two youths were taken into custody after the local police station was informed of the incident. Security has been tightened in the area to thwart any untoward incident, the SP said.

MHA asks WB to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Kolkata Police Commissioner

Bofor Case: Officer summoned by CBI found dead in Madhya Pradesh

The junior works manager (JWM) of Guns Carriage Factory (GCF) was found dead in a drain on Tuesday, confirmed police.He was missing since January 17 after being summoned by the CBI in connection with the alleged supply of Chinese-spare parts for production of indigenised Bofors guns used by the Army.A blood-stained blade was also found near the body of 45-year-old SC Kathua. Delhi: Travel agent held for harassing Belgian tourist

Delhi Police have arrested a 30-year-old man on Tuesday for allegedly harassing a Belgian tourist after which she left the national capital within a day.According to police, the woman was harassed last year in December, after which, the victim informed the Belgian embassy about the incident. The accused, identified as Imran Latha, was arrested from Delhi's east Vinod Nagar. Indian American arrested on charges of H-1B, naturalisation fraud

An Indian-American was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly submitting 11 fake H-1B visa applications and fraudulantly procuring his own citizenship, US Attorney Craig Carpenito said. Neeraj Sharma, 43, living in the Piscataway township of New Jersey, is charged by complaint with one count of visa fraud and one count of naturalization fraud, the attorney said. He will be produced before US Magistrate Judge Michael Hammer in Newark federal court. The visa and naturalisation fraud charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of USD 250,000. A leading orthopaedic doctor was arrested here for allegedly killing his 30-year-old driver, chopping the body into over a dozen pieces and immersing them in acid at his residence in a bid to destroy the evidence, police said Tuesday. Dr Sunil Mantri, 56, killed Virendra Pachouri on Monday as the driver suspected that Mantri was having an illicit relationship with his wife. He was arrested Tuesday. "Mantri's wife used to run a boutique at their home. However after her death, Pachouri's wife started running it. The driver suspected Mantri was in an illicit relationship with his wife and so he allowed her to run it," Superintendent of Police Arvind Saxena told PTI. Centre moves SC seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Prashant Bhushan

The Centre has moved the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan for his tweets alleging that they amounted to making false statement in a pending case on appointment of M Nageswara Rao as interim CBI Director. The plea has been filed days after Attorney General K K Venugopal had filed a similar contempt petition against Bhushan for his alleged tweets. A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra is scheduled to hear on Wednesday the plea filed by NGO Common Cause challenging appointment of Rao as interim chief of the probe agency. Rajeev Kumar destroyed, tampered with evidence: CBI tells SC

The CBI Tuesday told the Supreme Court that Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, who was leading the SIT in the Saradha chit fund scam, destroyed, destructed and tampered with material evidence in the form of call detail records (CDRs) of the prime accused and potential accused persons. The agency said a strong prima facie case of Kumar having committed offences both under Prevention of Corruption Act and other IPC offences has been made out. The agency also claimed that companies like Shardha, Rose Valley and Tower Group had given huge contributions to the Trinamool Congress. The CBI, which filed an additional affidavit in pursuance to Monday's order, said in spite of continuous insistence and follow up by it, Kumar furnished only CDRs of the prime accused on June 28, 2018. "The CDRs of the accused, when analysed by the CBI, were found to be tampered, doctored and the material evidence had been destroyed," it said. Elderly man stabbed to death; mob torches houses

Three houses were set on fire by a mob after a 65-year-old man was stabbed to death in Surmunda village in Simdega district on Tuesday, police sources said. Nandkishore Sahu was strolling on the road when a person stabbed him in the stomach with a knife and also hit him with a stone, killing him instantly. Old enmity was stated to be the reason behind the murder, the sources said. A large number of local people as well as family members of the victim assembled soon after Sahu was killed. Enraged over the incident, they set fire to three houses and ransacked several houses and damaged house-hold articles, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Amit Kumar Singh said. Apple executive's death: HC grants 4 weeks to state govt to file reply on bail plea to accused

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday granted four weeks to the state government for filing its reply on a bail plea of accused Prashant Kumar, the policeman who was booked for shooting dead Apple executive Vivek Tiwari here in September 2018. TN's power utility detects theft, levies over Rs 10 lakh fine

The State's electricity monolith, Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation has detected power theft in respect of over a dozen consumers and levied a cumulative fine of over Rs ten lakh. Following raids by enforcement officials, 12 cases of theft were detected in Cuddalore and nine in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari electricity distribution circles, an official release here said. In respect of 12 consumers under Cuddalore circle, a fine of Rs 5.26 lakh was levied and Rs 5.40 lakh fine was imposed for nine users in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari circle under Madurai division. "The consumers admitted the offence and chose to compound the case," the release said. Since they came forward to compound the case, police complaints were not lodged against them. The cumulative additional fine collected from consumers in Cuddalore, Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli circles was to the tune of Rs 1,17,000 to drop criminal proceedings.

Robert Vadra may appear before ED in money laundering case

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra is expected to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday in connection with a money laundering case relating to alleged possession of illegal foreign assets, official sources said Tuesday. Vadra was directed by a Delhi court to cooperate with the investigation being carried out by the central probe agency after he knocked on its door seeking anticipatory bail in this case. The sources said Vadra, once he appears, will be grilled about the transactions, purchase and possession of certain immovable assets in London and his statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
