Cong reviews poll preparedness in Delhi, asks leaders to strengthen party

Congress leaders from Delhi on Wednesday held a meeting with the party's top leadership to review the preparedness for the Lok Sabha elections and discussed ways and means to strengthen the organisation in all seven parliamentary constituencies in the national capital. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi, who were present at the meeting, asked party leaders to remain united and connected with the people, sources said. Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary and former Union minister Ajay Maken, who were also present at the meeting, pointed out to the issues relating to a possible alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the sources said. Congress reviews poll preparedness in J'khand for 2024 Lok Sabha elections

The Congress on Wednesday reviewed the preparedness of its Jharkhand unit for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and said the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) will try to win all 14 parliamentary seats in the state. There can be no peace in Manipur till 6,000 sophisticated arms and 6 lakh rounds of ammunition are recovered, deputy leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi said on Wednesday. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday recounted the harrowing experience he had encountered during his visit to violence-hit Manipur and said during his 19 years of political life, he had never come across such a situation. Blaming the BJP for creating the deep division in the northeastern state, he said it may take at least five years to bring Manipur back on its feet. Parl functioned for less than half of scheduled time in Monsoon Session

Lok Sabha functioned for only 43 per cent of its scheduled time and Rajya Sabha 55 per cent in the just-concluded Monsoon session but legislative activity remained high with 23 bills being passed, data compiled by a think tank shows. According to data compiled by PRS Legislative Research, the lower house had 17 sittings, which lasted for about 44 hours 15 minutes. The debate on no-confidence motion lasted for 19 hours and 59 minutes, and 60 members participated in the discussion. The motion was negated through voice vote. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday slammed the opposition parties for walking out from Parliament during the no-confidence motion and said his government has defeated the "negativity being spread" by them across the country. There is "no meagre allocation" of resources for defence modernisation, and allocation for it under total capital outlay for defence services has gone up from Rs 80,959.08 crore in financial year 2019-20 to Rs 1,32,301.27 crore in 2023-24, the government informed the Parliament on Friday. Election Commission comes out with final report on Assam delimitation

The Election Commission on Friday published its final report on the delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Assam, keeping their total numbers unchanged at 126 and 14, respectively. In its final order, the poll panel has revised the nomenclature of one parliamentary and 19 assembly constituencies. According to a statement by the poll body, 19 assembly and two Lok Sabha constituencies have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs). One Lok Sabha and nine assembly constituencies have been reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs). It said more than 1,200 representations were considered before finalising the report. Forty-five per cent of the suggestions and objections received by the panel were addressed in the final order. Action taken against 0.16 mn claims of Rs 287 cr under AB-PMJAY till Aug 5

Appropriate action against over 1.6 lakh claims worth Rs 287 crores has been taken under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme till August 5 by state health agencies, the Lok Sabha was told on Friday. Responding to a question, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said 210 hospitals have been de-empanelled and 188 hospitals suspended due to their involvement in activities non-compliant with the guidelines issued by the National Health Authority (NHA) or the state health authority. A penalty of Rs 20.71 crore has been levied, of which Rs 9.5 crore has been recovered, he said. The NHA has set up a National Anti-Fraud Unit (NAFU) with the primary responsibility of prevention, detection and deterrence of fraud and abuse under AB-PMJAY, Mandaviya said. In a landmark move, Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday introduced three bills in Lok Sabha to replace colonial-era laws, asserting that the proposed laws will transform the country's criminal justice system and bring the spirit to protect the rights of the Indian citizen at the centre stage. Shah introduced the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Bill, 2023; Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Bill, 2023; and Bharatiya Sakshya (BS) Bill, 2023 that will replace the Indian Penal Code, 1860, Criminal Procedure Act, 1898, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively and said the changes were done to provide speedy justice and creating a legal system that keeps contemporary needs and aspirations of the people. LS passes amendments to GST bills to levy 28% tax on bets in online gaming

Lok Sabha on Friday approved amendments to the Central and Integrated GST laws to levy 28 per cent tax on the full face value of bets in online gaming, casinos and horse race clubs.
