Shinde sets June 7 deadline to finish drain cleaning in Mumbai region

As the financial capital experiences pre-monsoon showers, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday directed the municipal administration to complete all ongoing drain cleaning work in Mumbai city and its suburbs by June 7. He told officials concerned that the silt removed from drains should be picked up within 48 hours and warned those showing negligence in the cleaning of nullahs would face action. SC calls for judicial audit, dedicated courts to handle NIA trials

The Supreme Court on Friday underlined the need for dedicated courts for NIA cases while calling for a "judicial audit" of laws enacted by the Centre and the prospective ones by the states. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh said the cases entrusted to the NIA were of heinous cases, having pan India ramifications. The top court said each such case contained hundreds of witnesses and the trial did not progress with the required pace as the presiding officers of the court were busy with other cases. "In the absence of judicial audit of cases likely to be generated with the enactment of law, the trial of such cases had brought burden on the court," the bench said. The top court further said the only appropriate course meant setting up special courts where trial of cases only related to special statutes could be carried out with a day-to-day hearing. "The decision of creating additional courts and requisite infrastructure is in the policy domain of the executive which

MNS: Seek concrete proposal from Sena (UBT) on alliance after past betrayal

A senior MNS leader has said his chief Raj Thackeray would consider an alliance with the Shiv Sena (UBT) only if a concrete proposal is put forward, noting their previous overtures for a tie-up were met with betrayal. Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Sandeep Deshpande of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) referred to Raj Thackeray's recent interview where he signalled openness to have talks with the Sena (UBT), headed by his estranged cousin Uddhav Thackeray, for a political alliance. Local body elections in Maharashtra, including for civic corporations of Mumbai, Thane, Nashik, Nagpur and Pune, are slated to be held later this year. If the Shiv Sena (UBT) feels an alliance with the MNS is possible, they should come forward with a substantial proposal. Raj Thackeray will take a decision on it, he maintained. Deshpande recalled past instances when the MNS had initiated tie-up talks, but faced what he called betrayal. Be it in 2014 or 2017, we sent proposals but they betrayed

Passengers slam MSRTC for fare disparity on e-buses with same amenities

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has invited the ire of passengers by charging higher fares for electric buses with the same features and facilities by giving them different brand names and colours. Experts and passengers have criticised the state-run corporation for the disparity in fares on the electric Shivneri and Shivai buses. The MSRTC, the country's largest state-run transport undertaking, operates a fleet of nearly 15,000 buses, ranging from non-AC services to premium air-conditioned electric coaches. In January this year, the Maharashtra State Transport Authority (STA) approved a 14.95 per cent hike in the MSRTC bus fares. The corporation charges Rs 21.25 per 6 km on blue 'E-Shivneri' buses and Rs 15.15 for the white-green 'E-Shivai', both built on the Olectra CX2 platform that serves various intercity routes in Maharashtra since inducted in its fleet on a gross cost contract (GCC) model. According to MSRTC sources, the E-Shivneri fleet primarily .

Over 200 new health centres in Maharashtra remain shut due to fund crunch

More than 200 newly constructed primary health centres (PHCs) and sub-centres in Maharashtra are lying unused, as funds have not been allocated for essential supplies and staff, a senior official from the public health department said. PHCs and sub-centres are crucial to the rural healthcare system and are the first respondents during medical emergencies and outbreaks of diseases in villages, providing affordable treatment. They run national health programmes, including immunisation drives and provide essential care to women and children. The official said several PHCs and sub-centres built over the last four years have remained non-functional, as they haven't received funds for furniture, power connection and staff. "The department approved the construction of more than 400 primary health centres (PHCs) and sub-centres across the state between 2021 and 2025, and of these, 210 buildings have been constructed, but many remain non-functional," he said.
