West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Wednesday said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is in a hurry for holding assembly by-polls as she wants to cling on to the chair. Ghosh told reporters here that when the assembly election was underway in March-April this year she had urged the chief election commissioner to halt it midway fearing spread of COVID-19 infection across the state. "So why is the chief minister in such a hurry asking the CEC's office to hold the by-polls now? At the same time why are elections to the 118-odd municipalities of the state not being held till now? People residing in areas under these municipalities are facing civic problems as there are no councillors," he said. Banerjee, who had contested the assembly poll from Nandigram, had lost to BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari. PM Modi dials Mamata, assures help to mitigate flood situation in Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday and took stock of the flood situation in the state, a senior official of the state government said. The prime minister assured Banerjee of all central assistance to mitigate the flood situation, he said. The chief minister, who was visiting flood-hit Udaynarayanpur in Howrah district, was learned to have told the prime minister that her administration will send a report to the PMO on the flood situation, and damages caused by the deluge after completing the survey, the official said. At least 15 people have been killed and nearly 3 lakh were displaced as large parts of six districts of the state have been inundated due to heavy rain and the release of water by the Damodar Valley Corporation and the Durgapur Barrage.
