Railway approves procurement of 238 Vande Bharat Metro rakes for Mumbai

The Railway Board on Friday approved the procurement of 238 Vande Bharat Metro trains for Mumbai, senior Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) officials said. These rakes will be procured under the ambitious Mumbai Urban Transport Project-III (MUTP-III) and 3A (MUTP-3A), which are being helmed by the Railway ministry and the Maharashtra government to augment the capacity of the metropolis' suburban train network, they added. "These trains will be manufactured by the technology partner ensuring Make in India guidelines of the Centre's Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. The procurement will be undertaken by MRVC and it will be with maintenance requirements spanning 35 years," said an MRVC spokesperson. Two depots for maintenance of the rakes already approved under MUTP-III and 3A will be set up by the technology partner, the official added. CCI notifies setting up of regional offices in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has notified setting up of its regional offices in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. The regional offices will help the regulator in creating more awareness about competition law as well as provide easier access to people. The watchdog keeps a tab on unfair business practices across sectors in the market place as well as takes various initiatives to promote competition. The Southern Regional Office is in Chennai while the Eastern and Western Regional Offices are in Kolkata and Mumbai, respectively. These offices were inaugurated earlier. In terms of territorial jurisdiction, seven states and Union Territories (UTs), including Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, will be under the Southern Regional Office, according to a notification dated May 16. Police prohibit flying of drones as G20 meeting gets underway in Mumbai

In view of the ongoing G20 meeting in the city, the Mumbai police has prohibited the flying of drones or balloons. The flying of "para-gliders, all types of balloons, kites and remote control microlight aircraft" is prohibited, said the order issued under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) on Monday. It will be in force between May 16 to 25. The third meeting of the energy transition working group of G20 began here on Monday. It is apprehended that drones and similar aircraft could be used by terrorists or anti-social elements to launch an attack as a large number of VIPs are expected to attend the G20 meeting, the official release said. "Considering safety and security of the people who are attending the meeting, Mumbai Police has prohibited the flying of drones in the jurisdictions of Sahar, Vakola, BKC, Bandra, Colaba and Azad Maidan police stations," it said.

Mumbai ranks 6th in housing price growth index, globally: Report

Mumbai ranks 6th among 46 cities globally in terms of annual price growth of high-end residential properties with appreciation of 5.5 per cent, according to Knight Frank. Real estate consultant Knight Frank India in its report 'Prime Global Cities Index Q1 2023' said that Mumbai, Bengaluru and New Delhi have registered an increase in average annual prices in January-March 2023. "Mumbai moved up from the 38th rank in Q1 2022 to the 06th rank in Q1 2023 based on the annual growth in high-end or prime properties," the consultant said in a statement. Bengaluru and New Delhi also witnessed an upward movement in index ranking to 16th and 22nd ranks from their previous 37th and 39th ranks, respectively, in the first quarter of 2022 calendar year. Coastal Road in Mumbai to be named after Sambhaji Maharaj, says CM Shinde

The ambitious coastal road being constructed in Mumbai city will be named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Sunday. He was speaking at an event organised at the Gateway of India here to celebrate the 366th birth anniversary of Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The coastal road is Mumbai's lifeline and we are going to name it after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. We will also erect a statue of Sambhaji Maharaj on this road, he said. Maha govt drops all charges against Param Bir Singh, revokes suspension

The Maharashtra government has dropped all charges against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and revoked his suspension order issued in late 2021, an official said on Friday. At least four FIRs related to extortion were registered against Singh in Mumbai and adjoining Thane. The order revoking his suspension was issued by the state home department on Wednesday, the official said. As per the order, the period of the retired IPS officer's suspension should be treated as he was on duty, he said. Singh was suspended in December 2021 when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government was in office.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said Mumbai is the safest among metropolises in the country. Mumbai reports 47 new Covid-19 cases, zero death; active tally at 409

Mumbai on Wednesday reported 47 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall tally to 11,63,399, while no fresh death linked to the infection was reported in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. A BMC bulletin said the death toll remained unchanged at 19,768. On Tuesday, the financial capital logged 56 cases and zero fatality. As per the bulletin, 1,274 new coronavirus tests were conducted in the city, pushing up their cumulative count to 1,88,57,431. The BMC said the number of recoveries reached 11,43,222 after 67 patients recuperated from the respiratory illness in the last 24 hours, leaving the metropolis with 409 active cases. Mumbai's coronavirus recovery rate stood at 98.3 per cent, while growth rate of cases between May 3 and May 9 was 0.0054 per cent. The case doubling rate was 13,635 days, said the bulletin.

MoU signed for developing 4 stations along Mumbai-Ahmedabad Rail corridor

Union Housing and Urban Affairs and Railways ministries have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for building four stations along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (Project-SMART) corridor, a statement said on Monday. Maharashtra sees 177 new Covid-19 cases; Mumbai reports 48 fresh infections

Maharashtra on Sunday reported 177 new COVID-19 cases, including 48 in Mumbai city, while one person succumbed to the viral disease, taking the total infection count to 81,67,519 and fatalities to 1,48,537, said a health official. A day earlier, Maharashtra reported 176 cases and two fatalities. There are currently 1,628 active cases in the state, he said. As many as 424 patients were discharged in the past 24 hours following which the total number of recovered patients stood at 80,17,354. The recovery rate of the state is now 98.16 per cent, he said. The case fatality rate is 1.81 per cent. The state health department carried out 7,295 tests in the past 24 hours, taking the total figure to 8,70,47,732, he said. At present, the dominant variant of COVID is omicron XBB.1.16, he said. Five persons injured after a parapet collapsed at building in Versova

Five persons including four minors were injured after a portion of the parapet collapsed at a residential building in suburban Versova on Friday afternoon, a civic official said. Four of them were in the 16-17 age group while another was 23 years old, he said. Three of them were admitted to a private hospital and two to a civic hospital and the condition of all of them was stable, he added. A portion of the parapet on the second floor of Silver Streak apartment on Yari Road collapsed around 4.30 pm. Fire brigade and police personnel rushed to the spot, the official said. The precariously hanging portion of the parapet was later removed and the area near the road was cordoned off as a precautionary measure, he added.

Mumbai reports 87 new covid infections, tally reaches 11,63,173 live cases

Mumbai on Friday reported 87 new coronavirus infections which took the tally of cases in the city to 11,63,173, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. On the fifth day in a row, India's financial capital logged fewer than 100 cases. A day before, the city had recorded 91 new cases and zero fresh fatalities. On Friday the death toll remained unchanged at 19,766 with no fatality being reported. As per the BMC bulletin, 1,519 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the city. The total of tests conducted so far reached 1,88,51,598. The number of recovered patients reached 11,42,826 with 135 persons recovering since previous evening. There are 581 COVID-19 cases in the city now. The recovery rate of Mumbai is 98.2 per cent and overall growth rate of COVID-19 cases for the period from April 28 to May 4 was 0.0072 per cent. Caseload doubling rate in the city is 9,263 days, as per the bulletin.
