Railway ticket checkers are being provided body cameras with the aim to ensure transparency in the process and prevent violent and unruly behaviour on board trains, officials said. As a pilot project, the Central Railway has procured 50 such body cameras and provided them to ticket checkers in the Mumbai Division. Procured at a cost of Rs 9,000 each, these body cameras can record about 20 hours of footage. Officials say that if the pilot project in Mumbai is successful, it will be replicated across the rail network. Body cameras were first worn by police in the United Kingdom in 2005 and have since been adopted by numerous police forces and law enforcement agencies worldwide. Mumbai on Thursday reported 96 COVID-19 cases, which took the tally to 11,63,086, while the death toll stood unchanged at 19,766, a civic official said. It was the fourth day in a row when the addition to the tally was below the 100-mark, with Wednesday seeing 67 cases and one death, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation official pointed out. The recovery count increased by 135 in the last 24 hours to reach 11,42,691, leaving the city with an active caseload of 629. As per civic data, the recovery rate is 98.2 per cent, the overall growth rate of cases between April 27 and May 3 was 0.0073 per cent, while the caseload doubling time was 8,732 days. Maharashtra on Sunday recorded 425 COVID-19 cases, including 105 in Mumbai, which took the state's tally to 81,65,891, while the death toll stood unchanged at 1,48,514, a health official said. The addition to the tally was a drop from the 489 cases detected on Saturday, which also saw one death, he pointed out. The recovery count increased by 499 in the last 24 hours to touch 80,13,372, leaving the state with 4,005 active cases. Registration of properties in the Mumbai municipal region fell 10 per cent this month to 10,514 units on higher base effect, according to Knight Frank India. In April 2022, 11,743 properties were registered in Mumbai city, which is an area under the jurisdiction of Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC). "Mumbai city (area under BMC jurisdiction) saw property sales registration of 10,514 units in April 2023, adding over Rs 900 crore to the state exchequer, registering its highest ever revenue collection for the month of April in the last 10 years," Knight Frank said in a statement. The growth in revenues was on account of an increased stamp duty rate and surge in higher-value property transactions, the consultant said. Mumbai on Tuesday reported 191 new COVID-19 cases, a sharp rise from 59 infections recorded a day before, and one fatality, the city civic body said. With the new additions, the overall number of cases in the metropolis rose to 11,62,137 and the death toll to 19,762. A total of 11,41,140 patients have recovered from the infection in Mumbai so far, including 219 in the last 24 hours, leaving the city with 1,235 active cases, it stated. As per the bulletin, 2,168 swab samples were tested during the day, taking the total number of tests conducted so far in Mumbai to 1,88,37,294.
