BJP gains unassailable lead in 9 seats, fight only for Rohtak seat now

The BJP has gained unassailable lead in nine of the ten Lok Sabha seats in Haryana and the fight appears to be only for the Rohtak seat now where Congress' sitting MP Deepender Singh Hooda was putting up a challenge to the saffron party candidate. If the BJP wins nine or even the tenth seat, it will be the party's best-ever performance, surpassing the previous best in 2014 when it won seven of the eight it contested. In 1999, when it was in alliance with the Indian National Lok Dal, the BJP had won five seats while the remaining five were won by its ally. Rohtak was witnessing a see-saw contest between sitting MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who after leading with a margin of more than 13,000 votes at one stage over BJP's Arvind Sharma, was now trailing by over 4500 votes, as per trends available with the Election Commission. In the remaining nine seats, BJP candidates including five of its sitting MPstwo of them union ministerswere leading by margins ranging between 1 and 4 lakh. From ...

Banarasi paan adds flavour to roadside debate in Modi's constituency

On counting day morning, paan shops here were not just selling the 'Banarasi paan', immortalised in the 'Khaike paan Banaraswala' song from Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Don'. There was also some lively discussion on the menu. The paan shops dotting the temple town became hotspots for debate Thursday -- not on who will win from this Lok Sabha constituency but on the victory margin of the Varanasi MP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In 2014, Modi defeated Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal by 3.37 lakh votes. He got 5,16,593 votes, about half of the total cast. The debate was on at the Baiju Bhaiya Tambul Bhandar on Sigra road. Manoj Misra predicted a much bigger Modi win. "We expect him to break his own record this time," he said. "The people have this time voted for development. All the caste-related constraints have fallen apart," Misra said. His confidence probably came from the early counting trends that showed Modi surging ahead of his main opponents, Ajay Rai of the Congress and ...

Patnaik's BJD forges ahead in Odisha, looks set to form govt

Odisha's ruling BJD Thursday looked set to form its government for a fifth straight term, negating a Modi wave that is sweeping the country with its candidates leading in 112 of the state's 146 seats. The redoubtable Naveen Patnaik, who is powering his party to a certain triumph, is leading from both Bijepur and his home turf Hinjili. Election to one seat was countermanded following the death of a candidate. The BJP appears set to emerge as the main opposition party, with its nominees leading in 21 seats. However, unlike in most other states where BJP and its allies look in firm command, the saffron party will be a feeble opposition in Odisha. The BJP has 10 seats in the outgoing House. Congress candidates are leading in 11 places. The Congress, which was the main opposition to the BJD since the 2000 elections, has 16 MLAs in the outgoing assembly.
