Ukraine will win war of technologies against Russia: Minister Fedorov

As Ukrainian and Russian troops fight conventional battles on the front lines, Europe's first major war of the internet age has also sparked a war of technology as both sides vie for advantage with their drones and satellite communications. While the two sides have kept pace with one another thus far, Ukraine's minister in charge of technology told The Associated Press in an interview Friday that he was confident his country had the motivation and abilities to out-innovate Russia in the end. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, said unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), electronic warfare, satellite communications and other technologies had been a fundamental part of the war with Russia that began more than a year ago. Technologies allow traditional and modern artillery to be more accurate, and they help save the lives of our soldiers, he said. When you have eyes' over you, you can make more effective decisions about managing your troops. He acknowledged th

Russia's air force accidentally bombs its own city 'Belgorod' near Ukraine

When a powerful blast shook a Russian city near the border of Ukraine residents thought it was an Ukrainian attack. But the Russian military quickly acknowledged that it was a bomb accidentally dropped by one of its own warplanes. Belgorod, a city of 340,000 about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of the border, has faced regular drone attacks that Russian authorities blame on the Ukrainian military, but the explosion late Thursday was far more powerful than anything its residents had heard before. Witnesses reported a low hissing sound followed by a blast that made nearby apartment buildings tremble and threw a car on a store roof. It left a 20-metre (66-foot) -wide crater in the middle of a tree-lined boulevard flanked by apartment buildings, shattering their windows, damaging several cars and injuring two residents. A third person was later hospitalized with hypertension. Immediately after the explosion, Russian commentators and military bloggers were abuzz with theories about wha

Nato chief Stoltenberg visits Kyiv for first time since Russian invasion

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is visiting Ukraine for the first time since Russia launched its full-scale invasion more than a year ago, an alliance official said on Thursday. The NATO secretary-general is in Ukraine. We will release more information as soon as possible, said an alliance official, who asked not to be identified in line with NATO procedures. Pictures of Stoltenberg apparently paying tribute to fallen Ukrainian soldiers in Kyiv's St Michael's Square were published by local media. Apart from the important symbolism of the visit, the exact purpose of Stoltenberg's trip wasn't immediately clear. NATO has no official presence in Ukraine. As an organisation of 31 countries, it only provides nonlethal support generators, medical equipment, tents, military uniforms and other supplies to the government in Kyiv. Stoltenberg has been the strong voice of the alliance throughout the war and has been instrumental in garnering and coordinating support by the 31 member

Ukraine's top prosecutor tells US lawmakers of 'evil' Russian atrocities

Russia's invading forces are deliberately using rape, torture and kidnapping to try to sow terror among civilians in Ukraine, the top prosecutor in Ukraine told US lawmakers in graphic testimony Wednesday. Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin said nearly 80,000 cases of war crimes have been registered in Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. Focusing on just one area of the country that has felt the brunt of the war, Kostin described some of the discoveries made when the Ukrainian military liberated Kherson last November. He said some 20 torture chambers were found and more than 1,000 survivors have reported an array of abuses, including the use of electric shocks, waterboarding, being forced to strip naked, and threats of mutilation and death. Kostin said more than 60 cases of rape were documented in the Kherson region alone. In areas still controlled by Russian forces, residents, including children, are being forcefully relocated to other occupied territories or to Russia. Su

'No impunity': G7 vows tough, unified stance on Russia-Ukraine war

Top diplomats from the Group of Seven wealthy democracies vowed a unified front against Chinese threats to Taiwan and Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, saying at the close of their meetings Tuesday that they were committed to boosting and enforcing tough sanctions against Moscow. The G-7 communique laying out their commitments also included strong words over an unprecedented run of North Korean missile tests. But it was China's growing assertiveness in Asia and Russia's invasion of Ukraine that highlighted the three-day summit hosted by Japan in this hot springs resort town. There can be no impunity for war crimes and other atrocities such as Russia's attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure, the ministers said. Top diplomats from the Group of Seven wealthy democracies vowed a unified front against Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, saying at the close of their meetings on Tuesday that they were committed to boosting and enforcing tough sanctions against Moscow. The G-7 communique laying out their commitments also included strong words meant to curb what the ministers see as increasing Chinese and North Korean aggressiveness in Northeast Asia. Ukraine awaits US missile system after latest Russian strike kills 11

The death toll from Russian missile strikes on eastern Ukraine's city of Sloviansk rose to 11 Saturday as rescue crews tried to reach people trapped in the rubble of an apartment building, Ukrainian authorities said. Ukraine's air force said the country would soon have weapons with which to try to prevent attacks like the one Friday. The delivery of the Patriot air defence system promised by the US was expected in Ukraine sometime after Easter, Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said. The primarily Orthodox Christian country is preparing to observe Easter on Sunday. Speaking Saturday on Ukrainian state TV, Ihnat declined to give a precise timeline for the arrival of the defensive missile system but said the public would know as soon as the first Russian aircraft is shot down. A group of 65 Ukrainian soldiers completed their training at Oklahoma's Fort Still Army Post last month and returned to Europe to learn more about using the defensive missile system to track and shoot
