India to gain from China's decline in smartphone output: Report
Export of iPhones, smartphones, tablets, laptops from India to the US will be cheaper by 20 per cent compared to those shipped from China following the exemptions given by the Trump administration, industry body ICEA said on Sunday. The US government on Saturday amended its tariff order to exempt smartphones, tablets, laptops, and some other electronic devices from the new taxes. "China still has 20 per cent of iPhones, laptops, tablets, and watches. Only reciprocal tariff has been removed for China. India has zero tariff on iPhones and all smartphones, laptops and tablets exported to the US. Vietnam also has zero tariff on all Samsung and other smartphones, laptops and tablets exported to the US. So India and Vietnam are similarly placed on tariffs on these products and both enjoy a 20 per cent tariff advantage over China," ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo told PTI. But challenges over pricing, longevity, supply and app constraints may limit its success. Huawei said at a launch event in Kuala Lumpur that the Huawei Mate XT, first unveiled in China five months ago, will be priced at 3,499 euros (USD 3,662). Although dubbed a trifold, the phone has three mini-panels and folds only twice. The company says it's the thinnest foldable phone at 3.6 millimetres (0.14 inches), with a 10.2-inch screen similar to an Apple iPad. Right now, Huawei kind of stands alone as an innovator" with the trifold design, said Bryan Ma, vice president of device research with the market intelligence firm International Data Corporation. Any reduction in the customs duty on smartphone parts in the forthcoming budget will harm India's developing component ecosystem, discourage investment, increase imports, and make local firms uncompetitive, potentially resulting in job losses, think tank GTRI said on Tuesday. India's smartphone industry is a 'Make in India' success story, with 2023-24 production reaching USD 49.2 billion and exports at USD 15.6 billion, making smartphones the fourth-largest export after diesel, aviation fuel, and polished diamonds. However, a few industry groups are pushing for further import tariff cuts on smartphone components in the Union Budget for FY26. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) warns that this could harm India's growing local manufacturing ecosystem and long-term ambitions in electronics. "Instead of cutting tariffs, GTRI recommends setting up component hubs near ports to reduce import delays and warehousing costs. This approach, used by countries like Vietnam and China, wou
