The Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana (PM-SYM) pension scheme for unorganised workers was launched in Nagaland on Tuesday, officials said. Launching the PM-SYM in the state Nagaland Chief Secretary, Temjen Toy, said many similar schemes were launched in the past but unfortunately the Nagas were not able to take advantage of those schemes. He said the Labour and Employment Department is the nodal department and every individual and department need to spread awareness of the scheme to our people for the benefit of greater section of our people who are in the unorganised sectors. The PM-SYM is voluntary and periodic contribution based pension system meant for unorganised workers with income up to Rs 15,000 per month and eligibility criteria age between 18-40 years. This scheme provides for a fixed pension of Rs 3000 after attaining the age of 50 years on a monthly contribution of a small affordable amount during their working age.

Union minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar Tuesday claimed the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has stalled enrolment of workers under the Centre's new pension scheme for unorganised sector. The Bihar Cabinet on Tuesday hiked the dearness allowance of state government employees and pensioners by three per cent. Following the revision, the DA rate is now 12 per cent with effect from January 1, 2019, Cabinet Secretariat Department's Principal Secretary, Sanjay Kumar, said. Kumar said the enhancement in the allowance would have an additional annual burden of Rs 1,100.94 crore on the state exchequer. The cabinet also gave its nod for the Home Department's proposal to install CCTVs in Patna district, under the 'Safe City Surveillance' project. The Rs 110-crore project is aimed to check and contain crimes, including eve-teasing and harassment of women at public places, Kumar said. The creation of posts -- both teaching and non- teaching -- in newly-created government engineering and polytechnic colleges also got a go-ahead from the cabinet.

The numbers of subscribers for Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan (PM-SYM), which provides assured monthly pension of Rs 3,000 to informal workers, would soon cross one crore mark, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Tuesday. According to the labour ministry portal, as many as 10.95 lakh workers have already subscribed to the pension scheme. As many as 2.36 lakh common service centres are facilitating subscription of the scheme across 36 states in the country. The scheme was announced in the interim Budget by Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, providing Rs 527 crore for the scheme. It was made available for subscription to informal sector workers on February 15, 2019. Prasad expressed hope that the country wide launch of the scheme will help in encouraging more and more unorganised sector workers to subscribe the plan. An 85-year-old farmer from Nagpur district in Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide last week by setting his crop on fire and jumping into it, police said Tuesday. Police suspect the farmer, Gopal Jaane took the extreme step due to recurring health issues. The incident occurred on March 1 evening when Jaane allegedly set the pigeon pea crop on fire at his farm in Madna village, and jumped into it, an official release stated. When contacted, Jalalkheda police station inspector GR Tambe said, "As per preliminary investigation, the deceased farmer had some health issues. He was suffering from a kidney problem". Quoting villagers and kin of Jaane, the police officer said the farmer had tried to kill himself in the past as well. Police are awaiting postmortem report, and have registered a case of accidental death.
