We remain committed to continuously enhancing safety features for users: TikTok

TikTok said it remains committed to "continuously enhancing" safety features for its 120 million users in India after the Madras High Court on Wednesday lifted ban on the short-video app. The Madras HC has lifted its earlier ban on the Chinese short-video app with the condition that the content hosted using it should be free from obscene videos of children and women. It also warned the company that if any controversial video violating its conditions is found posted using the app, it would be considered as contempt of court. The Madras HC had on April 3 directed the Centre to ban the Chinese app voicing concern over "pornographic and inappropriate content" being made available through such apps. After the Supreme Court refused to stay the Madras HC order, tech giants Google and Apple had removed TikTok from their app stores in India to prohibit further downloads of the app. "We are glad about this decision and we believe it is also greatly welcomed by our thriving community in India, ..

This tool creates personalized workout recommendations from fitness tracking data

A tool called FitRec might estimate heart rates during a workout and recommend routes, researchers have claimed. FitRec is a fitness tracking tool powered by deep learning technology. The details will be discussed in the meeting, The World Wide Web Conference.Researchers trained FitRec on a dataset of more than 250,000 workout records for over 1,000 runners. This allowed computer scientists to build a model that analyzed past performance to predict speed and heart rate given specific future workout times and routes.FitRec also is capable of identifying important features that affect workout performance, such as whether a route has hills and the user's level of fitness. The tool can recommend alternate routes for runners who want to achieve a specific target heart rate. It also is capable of making short-term predictions, such as telling runners when to slow down to avoid exceeding their desired maximum heart rate."Personalization is crucial in models of fitness data because individuals .

Twitter adds feature for users to report content that misleads voters

Twitter said Wednesday it is adding a feature on its platform to allow users to easily report misleading content on voting and elections, as the microblogging firm stepped up efforts to tackle the menace of misinformation. Circulation of fake news on digital platforms like Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook has been a pain point, and the government has warned social media companies that any abuse of these platforms to influence electorate will not be tolerated. A study in early April had claimed that one in two respondents have received fake news through digital platforms in the last 30 days. Twitter, in a statement Wednesday said, the new dedicated reporting feature is in addition to its "existing proactive approach to tackling malicious automation and other forms of platform manipulation on the service". "The platform will start with 2019 Lok Sabha (polls) in India (April 25) and the European Parliament (April 29) elections and then roll out to other elections globally throughout the ...

New way for self-driving cars to 'see' objects

Scientists have developed a simple, cost-effective method to allow self-driving cars to 'see' 3D objects in their path. The laser sensors currently used to detect 3D objects in the paths of autonomous cars are bulky, ugly, expensive, energy-inefficient -- and highly accurate. These Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors are affixed to cars' roofs, where they increase wind drag, a particular disadvantage for electric cars. They can add around USD 10,000 to a car's cost. Despite their drawbacks, most experts have considered LiDAR sensors the only plausible way for self-driving vehicles to safely perceive pedestrians, cars and other hazards on the road. Scientists from Cornell University in the US have discovered that a simpler method, using two inexpensive cameras on either side of the windshield, can detect objects with nearly LiDAR's accuracy and at a fraction of the cost. The researchers found that analysing the captured images from a bird's eye view rather than the more ...
