Artificial intelligence can help in fight against human trafficking

As part of the recent study, researchers tried to understand how artificial intelligence can help in the fight against human trafficking.A group of computational researchers, experts in artificial intelligence (AI) and other members of the technology community are joining forces with policy experts, law enforcement officials, activists and survivors to help put the pieces together."Imagine the techniques that Google and Facebook are using to make a profit--understanding people, the way they connect, what their interests are, what they might buy or the activities they engage in," said Dan Lopresti, lead researcher."We can apply those same techniques--data mining, text mining, what's called graph mining--AI that's being used for legitimate and really profitable purposes, to track these illicit behaviours," added Lopresti. The findings were discussed in the Code 8.7: Using Computational Science and AI to End Modern meeting.Although traffickers have embraced the Internet and social media ..

Scientists release first-ever picture of a black hole

Scientists released the much-awaited first direct image of a massive black hole at the centre of Messier 87, a galaxy which is about 54 million light-years away, at the National Press Club here on Wednesday. The image has been taken by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), which is a network of 10 radio telescopes spread across the planet, according to The Washington Post. The telescope functioned as if it is a single receiver, tuned to high-frequency radio waves, to take the image. The picture - released at six simultaneous news conferences on Wednesday - shows the event horizon, which is the boundary between light and dark around a black hole. A doughnut-like body can be seen in the portrait, which scientists say is the dark silhouette of the black hole against the hot, glowing material that surrounds it."We are able to image one more object in the universe that ... at one point people thought could not be possible. It hits that human explorer spirit. We got another look into the ...

Austria mulls user registration for online platforms

Austria said Wednesday it was considering a law to make it mandatory for big internet platforms to register their users and deprive those behind hate posts of anonymity. "Unfortunately there have been an increasing number of clear violations, denigrations and humiliations online in the past under the cover of anonymity. That's why we need a framework for more responsibility online," Chancellor Sebastian Kurz wrote on Twitter. The new law would take effect in 2020 and would make it mandatory for platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to register their users, said Gernot Bluemel, minister in charge of EU affairs, art, culture and media. It would be up to the platforms themselves to decide the form of registration, but authorities would be able to access users' identities in case of hate postings or on suspicion of other laws being broken, he said. "The online space should not be a space without laws," Bluemel told reporters after a weekly cabinet meeting, adding that Austria .

Breaking the internet: new regulations imperil global network

Is the dream of one global internet still alive? Increasingly, moves by governments to filter and restrict content are threatening to fragment the system created with the promise of connecting the world with a largely unified body of content. China for years has walled off some western services, and the fragmentation may be accelerating with regulations being imposed elsewhere, say analysts. This is leading to a "splinternet," a term circulated for a decade or more but gaining more traction in recent months. "The internet is already fragmented in material ways, but each regulator around the world thinks they know how to fix the internet," said Eric Goldman, director of the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara University. "I think we will see a tsunami of regulations that will lead to a further splintering of the internet." The New Zealand Christchurch mosques massacre livestreamed online heightened the sense of urgency in some countries, with debates in the US and EU on curbing ...

First real image of blackhole to be unveiled today

Seeing is believing, say space enthusiasts around the world as they eagerly await the first ever true image of a blackhole, which could reveal the shape of the mysterious, warped region of the spacetime fabric that has fuelled human imagination and inspired numerous sci-fi movies and literature for generations. Using data from six telescopes located across the world, the scientists involved in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project have imaged the Sagittarius A* -- the blackhole located at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy -- and another massive black hole 53.5 million light-years away in galaxy M87. The results will be announced at 6.30 pm IST Wednesday. The gravitational pull of black holes lets nothing -- not even particles and electromagnetic radiation such as light -- escape from inside it. This makes imaging a blackhole nearly impossible. Blackholes swallow the surrounding gas, which swirls around in a flattened disk, spiralling into it at speeds close to light. The ...
