Trump's reciprocal tariffs likely to create chaos for global businesses

President Donald Trump is taking a blowtorch to the rules that have governed world trade for decades. The reciprocal' tariffs that he announced Thursday are likely to create chaos for global businesses and conflict with America's allies and adversaries alike. Since the 1960s, tariffs or import taxes have emerged from negotiations between dozens of countries. Trump wants to seize the process. Obviously, it disrupts the way that things have been done for a very long time,' said Richard Mojica, a trade attorney at Miller & Chevalier. Trump is throwing that out the window ... Clearly this is ripping up trade. There are going to have to be adjustments all over the place.' Pointing to America's massive and persistent trade deficits not since 1975 has the U.S. sold the rest of the world more than it's bought -- Trump charges that the playing field is tilted against US companies. A big reason for that, he and his advisers say, is because other countries usually tax American exports at .

Reciprocal tariffs by Trump admin may not hurt India much, says GTRI

The US government's move to impose reciprocal tariffs to match higher duties levied by its trading partners is not likely to hurt India much as there are differences in the export profiles of the two countries, economic think tank GTRI said on Friday. Citing an example, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that if the US charges 50 per cent reciprocal tariffs on Indian pistachios because India charges the same, India is happy as it does not export pistachios. Additionally, for 75 per cent value of the US exports to India, the average tariff is less than 5 per cent, GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. In contrast, India faces high US tariffs on many labour-intensive goods like textiles, garments, and footwear, ranging between 15-35 per cent on several products, he added. "Given the differences in the export profiles of the two countries, reciprocal tariffs may not have a significant impact...In the new Trump era, India may wait to see the US decision in April on reciproca

Trump readies tariffs on trade partners, setting up major economic showdown

President Donald Trump is taking additional action to upset the world trade system, with plans to sign an order this week that would require that US tariffs on imports match the tax rates charged by other countries. It's time to be reciprocal, Trump told reporters earlier this week. You'll be hearing that word a lot. Reciprocal. If they charge us, we charge them. The president had suggested that the order would come on Tuesday or Wednesday. But when Tuesday passed without the tariffs being officially announced, Trump was not specific on his timing, telling reporters Wednesday afternoon: I may do it later on, or I may do it tomorrow morning. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said she believes that the tariffs would come before Thursday's visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As Trump has unleashed a series of tariffs after being in power for less than a month, he has fully taken ownership of the path of the US economy. It's a bet that his economic ideas can ...
