Fear of Trump's trade war sends US consumer sentiment plunging

US consumer sentiment plunged in April, the fourth consecutive month of declines, in a seemingly sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump's trade wars that have fuelled anxiety over possible job losses and rising inflation. The preliminary reading of the University of Michigan's closely watched consumer sentiment index, released Friday, fell 11 per cent on a monthly basis to 50.8, the lowest since the depths of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past year, sentiment has tumbled 34 per cent. The decline was pervasive and unanimous across age, income, education, geographic region, and political affiliation, said Joanne Hsu, director of the survey. The share of respondents expecting unemployment to rise in the coming months increased for the fifth straight month and is now the highest since 2009 during the Great Recession. While consumer sentiment is not always a reliable indicator of the overall economy, it has at times reflected shifting vibes in how the public feels about presidential .

The commerce ministry is actively tracking developments in global trade, particularly in relation to tariff changes, import surges, and export-related challenges, an official statement said on Friday. The external shock in the form of tariffs imposed on a range of countries by the Trump administration has created uncertainity for Sri Lanka in its path to recovery from economic crisis, the IMF said here on Friday. The recent external shock and evolving developments are creating uncertainty for the Sri Lankan economy, which is still recovering from crisis," the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said at the end of a staff visit. The IMF team was here from April 3 until Friday to discuss Sri Lanka's performance and policies for the four-year USD 2.9 billion facility extended in 2023. US tariffs on China could make some Indian products more competitive: GTRI

Imposition of steep 125 per cent tariffs on China by the US could help Indian products from sectors such as textiles, leather, engineering, and electronics become more competitive in America, think tank GTRI said on Friday. However, the benefits may be short-lived unless India proactively leverages this breathing space to strengthen its export ecosystem, streamline compliance processes, and enhance engagement with US buyers, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said. The 90-day suspension of country-specific tariffs, as outlined in the new executive order, offers a small window of opportunity for Indian exporters, GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said. While Chinese goods now face steep tariffs of up to 125 per cent, imports from India will be subject to a flat 10 per cent additional duty, significantly lowe
