IAF conducts night drill with fighter jets on Ganga Expressway airstrip

The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted night-time combat drills involving fighter jets on the country's first expressway airstrip on the Ganga Expressway in Shahjahanpur district, officials said Saturday. The drill, which took place between 7 pm and 10 pm on Friday, saw fighter jets Rafale, Sukhoi, Jaguar, and Mirage-2000 simulate touch-and-go landings and combat operations on the 3.5-kilometre airstrip near Piru village under the Jalalabad Police Station limits. Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi told PTI, "Multiple fighter jets carried out successful sorties as part of a night operational exercise. The drill involved precision landings, coordinated take-offs, and tactical operations by jets such as Rafale, Sukhoi, Jaguar, Mirage-2000, and M-32." All Pakistani citizens, barring one, have been "expelled" from Uttar Pradesh under the Centre's orders after the Pahalgam terror attack, the state government said on Monday. The last Pakistani citizen is set to be deported on Wednesday and is under constant surveillance by police and intelligence agencies, it said in a statement. UP aims to triple exports to Rs 5 trn in five years with help of new policy

Uttar Pradesh is working on a policy to promote exports and triple the outbound shipment from the state to over Rs 5 lakh crore in the next five years by tapping new markets and products. To achieve the target, the state government is working on a new export policy for 2025-30 which is expected to be approved soon. The thrust of the new policy would be to increase exports three times by 2030 from Rs 1.7 lakh crore in 2023-24 through host of measures including capital subsidy and sops for exporters, UP Minister for Industrial Development and Export Promotion Nand Gopal Gupta Nandi said. "We have extensively studied export policies of various governments across the country and have incorporated best practices in the draft policy. India lifted 171 mn people from extreme poverty between 2011-23: World Bank

India has lifted 171 million people from extreme poverty in the decade between 2011-12 and 2022-23, the World Bank said. "Over the past decade, India has significantly reduced poverty. Extreme poverty (living on less than USD 2.15 per day) fell from 16.2 per cent in 2011-12 to 2.3 per cent in 2022-23, lifting 171 million people above this line, the World Bank said in its Poverty & Equity Brief' on India. It added that rural extreme poverty dropped from 18.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent, and urban from 10.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent, narrowing the rural-urban gap from 7.7 to 1.7 percentage points a 16 per cent annual decline. The brief said that India also transitioned into the lower-middle-income category. Using the USD 3.65 per day LMIC poverty line, poverty fell from 61.8 per cent to 28.1 per cent, lifting 378 million people out of poverty. Three workers killed in firecracker factory explosion in UP's Saharanpur

Three workers died of burn injuries after a massive explosion at a firecracker factory here triggered a blaze on Saturday, an official said. The sound of the blast in the Nihal Khedi village in the early morning hours echoed in around a two-kilometre stretch. Saharanpur District Magistrate Manish Bansal informed reporters that the incident occurred around 4:30 am and several workers were present at that time. Three workers died due to burn injuries, he said. Upon receiving information about the blaze, police personnel, a forensic team, and fire tenders were rushed to the spot for rescue operations. UP Congress postpones protest against BJP in wake of Pahalgam attack

The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee postponed a scheduled protest at BJP district headquarters on April 25 in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir which claimed the lives of 26 people, a statement issued Thursday said. Main accused in Kasganj gang-rape arrested after encounter with UP police

The main accused in the gang rape of a woman was arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj after an encounter with police, a senior police official said. The man, Yogesh alias Block Pramukh, allegedly opened fire on the police team on Friday night who fired back and hit him in the leg, they said. Hoax bomb threat triggers panic at Kanpur airport, accused arrested

Panic gripped the Chakeri Airport in Kanpur briefly on Friday after it received a hoax call threatening to blow up a 72-seater flight. Police have arrested a 21-year-old man identified as Mohit Singh, who confessed to making the "prank call". According to ACP Sumit Sudhakar Ramteke, an airport staff named Satendra Singh received the hoax call, in which the caller claimed that a bomb had been planted on a 72-seater aircraft which would explode upon landing. Alarmed by the call, a bomb disposal squad along with an anti-sabotage check (ASC) team searched the airport premises, but nothing suspicious was found, the officer said. A surveillance unit with the assistance of local police traced and arrested the caller, Mohit Singh, a resident of Yashoda Nagar locality in the city, within two hours, Ramteke said. The Uttar Pradesh government and iPhone maker Foxconn have started discussions to set up an electronics manufacturing unit in the state, sources aware of the development said.
