29 killed as bus falls from bridge in UP, Rs 5 lakh compensation announced

Twenty-nine people were killed and 18 injured after a state-run bus skidded off the Yamuna Expressway and fell into a large drain in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, officials said. The bus was going from Lucknow to Delhi and had at least 50 passengers on board, they said. "As per the district magistrate (of Agra) 29 persons have died. The bus fell into a 'nallah' (drain)," Additional Chief Secretary Information, Awanish Awasthi, said. The Uttar Pradesh Roadways will pay ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, the officials said. "One sleeper coach passenger bus travelling from Lucknow to Delhi met with an accident on Yamuna Expressway (sic)," the Uttar Pradesh Police said on Twitter. The officials said the bus fell from a bridge and into an overflowing drain near Etmadpur.The gushing water is making it difficult to conduct rescue operations, they said. A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her Madarrasa teacher here.Superintendent of Police (Meerut Rural) Avinash Pandey said, "A 12-year-old girl has levelled rape allegations against her Urdu teacher. We have registered the case. Two police teams were constituted. The main accused Shahid has been arrested. We will try to file the chargesheet as soon as possible."According to the rape survior, the incident took place on Sunday night when she was allegedly kidnapped from her house in Khedi Kalan village in Meerut's Sarurpur."When I woke up in the night, he came, gagged my mouth and took me away. His name is Shahid and he teaches in the Madarrasa. I also study there," she said.This horrific incident comes days after alleged rape and murder of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl in Aligarh which sparked a nationwide outrage.

Uttar Pradesh: 19 dies in hail, dust storm; 48 injured

As many as 19 people died while 48 got injured in hail, dust-storms and lightening in the 12 districts mainly of Western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.According to government data, 8 animals have also died.The official data of the six districts in western Uttar Pradesh including Mainpuri, Kasganj, Etah, Budaun, Farrukhabad and Moradabad showed that 6 people died in the Mainpuri district alone while 20 got injured.Three people each have died in both Kasganj and Etah district. One person died in Moradabad district due to lightning while two got injured in Farrukhabad due to hail and dust-storm.The long dry spell coupled with hot weather conditions contributed to increasing the surface temperature which when combined with unusually high western disturbances and cyclonic activity resulted in hail and dust storm. Cop opens fire at neighbour in Lucknow, 3 injured

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), May 15 (ANI): At least three persons were injured after a Sub Inspector (SI) fired shots at a public place in Lucknow. Amit Kumar, a SI posted in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district, opened fire following an argument with his neighbour in Madiyaon area of Lucknow. While speaking to media on the matter, Police official said, "It's a personal dispute. Three people were injured. Accused is apprehended and his service weapon has also been seized.
