Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday visited the Okhla landfill site and said the work to process and remove waste from the massive dump was running behind the projected target. Interacting with reporters, the chief minister also said that the Delhi government is planning to hire the MCD "as an agency" to carry out mechanical sweeping and cleaning of roads falling under the jurisdiction of the PWD and the civic body. The chief minister's visit to the Okhla landfill site comes days after an inspection of work being done at the Bhalswa landfill site. There were 45 lakh tonnes of waste in this mountain of garbage at Okhla. Work began last November to process and remove it gradually, and the target was to remove 30 lakh tonnes by May 2024, Kejriwal told reporters. "But, this work is running slightly behind the projected target. Till date, about 18 lakh tonnes had to be removed, but (only) 12 lakh tonnes has been removed," he said. There are multiple reasons for this. But

Solid waste management in Haryana's Hisar, panel to submit report to NGT

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formed a panel and asked it to submit an action-taken report regarding solid waste management in Haryana's Hisar district. The NGT took the step after hearing a petition that claimed that the Municipal Corporation of Hisar had violated rules. It alleged that the corporation collects household waste without segregation and its garbage disposal vehicles do not reach all households, because of which people are forced to dump garbage in the open. A bench of Acting Chairperson Justice Sheo Kumar Singh noted that according to the data before the tribunal, there was 1.3 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of legacy waste in Hisar, which was because of a gap between waste generation and processing. The bench, also comprising judicial member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel, said before proceeding further, it deemed fit to call a report on the matter from a joint committee consisting of the Hisar collector and a representative of the Haryana

Improper waste management by U'khand: NGT refrains from imposing fine

The National Green Tribunal has accepted the request of the Uttarakhand government to allow it to deposit Rs 200 crore in a separate ring-fenced account for sewage and solid waste management. The state's chief secretary made the request after the tribunal announced a penalty of Rs 200 crore on the state for improper management of solid and liquid waste. Delhi government announces extension of free sewer connection scheme

The Delhi government on Monday announced the extension of its free sewer connection scheme, saying it will help reduce pollution in the Yamuna river. Water minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said the city government will provide free sewer connections in the unauthorised colonies of Sangam Vihar and Ghalibpur and Rs 7 crore has been earmarked for this purpose. He said the Arvind Kejriwal government has connected 527 new unauthorised colonies to the sewer network since coming to power eight years ago, expanding the sewer network by 2,371 kilometres. This new initiative will further strengthen the government's commitment to improve the living conditions of the people in Delhi, Bhardwaj said. Untapped wastewater from unauthorised colonies and jhuggi-jhopri clusters, and poor quality of treated wastewater discharged from sewage treatment plants and common effluent treatment plants is the main reason behind high levels of pollution in the Yamuna. MCD implements MVC recommendations, no change in existing Unit Area Value

The recommendations of the fifth Municipal Valuation Committee (MVC-V) have been implemented with effect from April 1 this year, with due approval of the civic authorities, officials said. No change in the existing Unit Area Value has been made as recommended by the MVC-I, they said. The MVC-V has tried to address all grievances relating to assessment of properties and has taken many progressive steps by rationalising the multiplicative factors, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi said in a statement. "The committee in its interim report had increased Unit Area Value (UAV) by 37 per cent. However, in its final report, it reconsidered its recommendation after careful consideration of the objections raised by the stakeholders against the proposed increase and retained the UAV as recommended by MVC-I without any change," it said. In order to encourage scientific disposal of solid waste in the city, the Committee introduced an environmental factor and announced 5 per cent rebate to suc
