Fresh snowfall hampers efforts to reopen Jammu-Srinagar NH
A fresh spell of snowfall hampered the efforts of authorities to reopen the Jammu-Srinagar national highway which remained closed for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday, officials said. The continuous closure of the 270-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, had left hundreds of passengers stranded here. The highway was closed on Monday following heavy snowfall in Jawahar Tunnel area the gateway to Kashmir - and multiple landslides triggered by the incessant rains between Banihal to Ramban over the past week. "The road clearance operation was going on in full swing and it was expected that the road will be made traffic worthy by Saturday evening. However, heavy snowfall started around noon and was going on, hampering the efforts," a traffic department official said. Shimla, Dalhousie, Kufri, Chail get more snowfall, temp dips in HP
Several tourist places in Himachal Pradesh continued to get snowfall Saturday, further dipping the temperature in the areas, the meteorological department said. Dalhousie (10 cm), Kufri (8 cm), Chail (8 cm) and Shimla (5.6 cm) received snowfall from 5.30pm Friday to 8.30am Saturday, Shimla meteorological centre Director Manmohan Singh said. Tribal areas Kalpa and Keylong also received snowfall of 12.4 cm and 8 cm respectively during the period, he added. Besides, several areas of the state witnessed rainfall between 1.6 mm and 7 mm, he added. Cold wave conditions have further intensified in the state with most hilly areas reeling under sub-zero temperatures. Rains bring respite from Delhi pollution
Rains over the last few days have washed away big pollutants in the national capital, contributing to a slight improvement in its Air Quality Index, which reached "moderate" levels on Saturday."The overall air quality over Delhi is moderate, purely attributed to rainfall. Fresh snowfall in U'khand; Nainital receives season's first
Nainital received the first snowfall of the season on Friday while Mussoorie, Chakrata and other places located at a height of 2,000 metres and above in Uttarakhand received fresh spells of snow, leaving the highways to Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri and over 60 rural roads blocked, officials said. Areas around Nainital like Kilbury and China Peak had received snowfall earlier this month but the tourist town itself wore a thin sheet of white on Friday after receiving the season's first snowfall. On the downside, a total of 64 rural motorable roads in the state were blocked by snow, officials of the Disaster Management Office here said. Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in parts of Rajasthan during last 24 hours resulting in temperature drop, a Met official said Friday. The minimum temperature dropped by 1 to 4 degrees Celsius at most places in the state, the Met department said. Dense fog reduced visibility to 50 metres in Sriganganagar and Pilani districts of the state, he said. On Friday morning, Roopbas of Bharatpur and Sepau of Dholpur district recorded 3 cm of rainfall followed by 2 cm of each in Baseri, Badi, Rajakheda, Mangaliyawas, Udaipurvati, Bansur, Neem Ka Thana, Dholpur, Kotputli, Pisangan, Pawta and Mahwa. Jammu-Srinagar NH closed for fifth day
The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained closed for the fifth day on Friday as fresh snowfall hampered efforts of authorities to clear the road for vehicular movement. The arterial road was closed on Tuesday after a snow avalanche had blocked both tubes of the Jawahar Tunnel on Qazigund side. The official said intermittent snowfall was hampering road clearance operations. "The Jammu-Srinagar highway is still closed for traffic. Efforts are on to make the road traffic worthy at the earliest," an official of the traffic department told PTI. Snowfall has been experienced in the rest of the valley also since Friday morning with Srinagar city getting nearly two inches of snow in the early hours, a MET department official said. Meanwhile, cold wave conditions persisted in Kashmir as the minimum temperature at all places stayed well below the freezing point last night. The minimum temperature in Srinagar last night settled at minus 1.3 degrees Celsius slightly up from minus 1.5 degrees .
Snowfall in major tourist places of HP, min temp dips below freezing point
Major tourist places of Himachal Pradesh witnessed snowfall again, dipping the minimum temperatures below the freezing point in these areas Friday, the Meteorological (MeT) department said. Kufri 15 cm, Manali 10 cm, Shimla 6.9 cm and Kalpa 1 cm received snowfall from 5.30 pm Thursday to 8.30 am Friday, MeT Centre Shimla director Manmohan Singh said. Besides, several low hills and plains of the state received light rains from 0.6 mm to 7.8 mm during the period, Singh added. The minimum temperature in Kufri was minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, minus 2.4 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie, minus 1 degrees Celsius in Manali and minus 0.8 degrees Celsius in Shimla during the period, he said, adding that the minimum temperature in Kalpa was minus 6.2 degrees Celsius. Tribal Lahaul and Spiti's administrative centre Keylong continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 14 degrees Celsius, Singh said.

54 trekkers stranded in snowfall rescued in Rudraprayag
All the 54 tourists, mostly trekkers from Mumbai, who were stranded in the high altitudes of Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand have been rescued and sent back to their homes, top officials said on Thursday.
Cold day in the national capital
It was cold day in the national capital on Thursday as light rain fell in several parts of the region. The maximum temperature settled at 22 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average while the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.7 degrees Celsius, two notches above the normal, said a Met department official. The Safdarjung Observatory, recording of which is considered the official figure for the city, received 3 mm rain between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Areas under Palam and Lodhi Road recorded 1.2 mm and 1.7 mm rainfall during the same period. Ridge and Ayanagar observatories recorded traces of rainfall. The Met office has forecast rain and thunderstorm with hail in isolated places on Friday, "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 19 and 10 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. Tourist places in Himachal reel under below sub zero temperature
Several tourist places of Himachal Pradesh are reeling under below sub zero temperature after fresh snowfall, the meteorological department said Thursday. The minimum temperature in Kinnaur's Kalpa was minus 6.7 degrees Celsius followed by minus 5.6 degrees Celsius in Manali of Kullu district, minus 4.8 degrees Celsius in Kufri of Shimla district, minus 1.6 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie of Chamba district and minus 1.1 degree Celsius in Shimla city, MeT Centre Shimla director Manmohan Singh said. The Keylong administrative centre continued to be the coldest place in the state at minus 11.8 degrees Celsius, he said. Meanwhile, Dalhousie and Manali received 10 cm and 2 cm of snowfall from 5.30 pm Wednesday to 8.30 am Thursday, the official said. Kalpa witnessed 14.1 cm of snowfall, while Keylong saw 2 cm of snowfall during the period, Singh added.
