Stryker India to enhance sales

BS Reporter Mumbai/ Ahmedabad
Stryker India, the Indian subsidiary of the US-based medical equipment manufacturer, Stryker Corporation, is planning to increase the sales of its ultra high density (UHD) polyethylene knee and hip joints by tying up with more hospitals.

The company sees huge prospects for expansion since its sales in India is just 2 per cent of the sales globally.

The company, in association with Sterling Hospital, will hold a day-long workshop for surgery on hip and knee replacement on January 28 in the city. Around 150 doctors, 40 per cent of whom would be from abroad, are expected to participate in the workshop.

Atul Ranade, area sales manager (West), Stryker, said the company's sales was around Rs 40-45 crore, which is hardly 2 per cent of its sales at the global level.

"There is huge scope for expanding our sales here. However, as of now, we do not have any such plans. We would consider manufacturing in India only if more technological advancement takes place here," he said.

Apart from joints, the company manufactures other surgical and laproscopic equipment.

Stryker India has been selling its surgical equipment in India since 1980's, and last year, the company began selling joints made of ultra high density polyethylene. Priced between Rs 85,000 and Rs 90,000, the joints offer a life of 18-20 years.

The company enjoys a market share of 50 per cent worldwide. Presently, there are only 3 distributors for Stryker India's products.
