Questioning Election Commission's view that electronic voting machines (EVMs) are tamper-proof, the Janata Party has said they should have facility to print a receipt just like an ATM to prevent any manipulation.

"EVMs in their present form are not acceptable. We are not convinced about their genuineness, we want them to be made tamper-proof," Janata Party President Subramaniam Swamy said here.

He wanted the EVMs to print a receipt just like an ATM so that the voter is convinced about the genuineness of the vote he/she has cast.

"Even in the US, one is given a receipt - the law requires that a receipt be given," the former Union Law Minister said.

On pressing the EVM button, the voter should be given a receipt and it should be deposited in a sealed box, which can then be used for cross-checking in case of any dispute cropping up post-election, Swamy said.

"People have proved that the EVMs at present can be tampered with," he said, adding "the Election Commission has failed to convince the public about the genuineness of the EVMs."

Swamy said he is likely to challenge the use of EVMs in the Supreme Court soon.
