The unemployment dole scheme announced by the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh during the 2012 assembly poll started to roll out yesterday, with its formal launch by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

In a function held at Colvin Taluqdars’ College ground here, Yadav personally handed over cheques to unemployment allowance beneficiaries in the presence of party patriarch and his father Mulayam Singh Yadav. In all, 10,500 beneficiaries from Sitapur, Hardoi, Lakhimpur Kheri, Rae Bareli, Unnao, Kanpur and Lucknow received the benefits.

As per the poll promise, eligible beneficiaries are entitled to Rs 1,000 unemployment allowance per month, to be handed out quarterly. A person should be between 25 and 40 years of age, unemployed, should have at least passed high school, and his/her family income should be under Rs 36,000 per annum, to be eligible for the scheme.

Addressing the gathering, the chief minister slammed the Mayawati regime for the lack of industrial development in UP, which he alleged had bred largescale unemployment.
