Five more infants died today in Malda district of West Bengal due to asphyxia and underweight taking the death toll to 12.

A hospital in Malda, which provides healthcare services to the province and other nearby areas, witnessed surge in crib deaths.

According to a doctor, seven infants had lost their lives on Saturday July 12, all below the age of one.

The infants were mainly admitted from Manikchok, Kaliachok and Ratua blocks under the district.

"My child died, early morning at 4a.m. He was five months old," said mother of an infant, Lipi Malik.

Yesterday, Medical Superintendent Jotish Kumar Sarkar had informed that the primary cause behind the deaths was low weight and respiratory problems.
